British jihadists caught
after parents inform police

Telegraph [UK], by Tom Whitehead

Original Article

Two British jihadists who fought in Syria were caught on their return after their parents alerted the police. Childhood friends Mohammed Nahin Ahmed and Yusuf Zubair Sarwar, both 22, spent eight months in the war-torn country last year fighting with a notorious terror group. Sarwar, a part time student, left a note for his parents, who thought he was on holiday in Turkey, saying he had gone to Syria to fight “jihad” and to become a martyr. The family alerted the police and pleaded for help and West Midlands counter terrorism officers were waiting for them when they finally returned

God bless the parents. Far too often we here ask ´where are the moderates?´ and yet fail to acknowledge people like these.
I do not for a minute think they are typical muslims, but do think we need to reconize, and laud their actions.

The free movement of people within the European Union is "extensively exploited by organised criminals to bring illicit commodities including drugs, human trafficking victims, illegal immigrants and counterfeit goods to Britain," according to a government report. Spain, Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands are key entry and distribution hubs for drugs and other illicit goods before they reach the UK. Europol, the EU´s law enforcement agency, admits that "the free movement of people and goods across the EU’s internal borders reduces the chance of detection," according the report which is part of a series of government reviews on the impact of

Greenpeace is in turmoil after more than 40 staff signed a letter calling two of the group’s most senior officials to resign. The group faced ridicule last month after it emerged that Husting chose to regularly fly between his home in Luxembourg and work in Amsterdam, leaving a massive carbon footprint. [Snip] The letter has spread among the group’s employees and has now been signed by almost all important campaign leaders and senior staff. Paracetamol has little impact on lower back pain and does not help sufferers recover more quickly, or improve pain levels, sleep or quality of life, research suggests. The painkiller is commonly prescribed for the most common form of back pain which usually feels like an ache, tension or stiffness. The Australian study, published in The Lancet, was the first large randomised trial to compare the effectiveness of paracetamol with a placebo for lower back pain. The study randomly assigned 1,652 individuals with an average age of 45 and with acute lower back pain from 235 primary care centres in Sydney

Norway´s intelligence service today said it has received information about an imminent ´concrete threat´ against Norway from people with links to Islamic fighters in Syria. Benedicte Bjoernland, the head of Norwegian security service PST, said the agency had received ´reliable information´ from a foreign partner about some kind of attack ´within days´. ´It was unspecific about what the target might be,´ Bjoernland said, adding PST has no information about how or when such an attack would take place. The information involves people who have ties with foreign fighters in Syria, she added. According to PST´s assessment last month, about 50 people have travelled

A pro-Russian separatist fighting in eastern Ukraine has admitted rebel forces shot down Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, it has been claimed. [Snip[ He said the rebels only realised their mistake when they began searching the crash site for the parachutes of military crew who may have bailed out the aircraft, only to find the bodies of children. Yet it is an unpalatable truth for all its aspirants that attaining the Holy Grail of American politics requires a very unholy scramble. [Snip] Why on earth would she do it? The remains of around 40 international victims of the Malaysia Airlines tragedy left Ukraine´s Kharkiv airport on a convoy of planes earlier today, ahead of a painstaking identification process which is expected to take several months. There is concern however, that as many as 95 victims--one third of the total number of passengers on board MH17--may still be missing after Dutch officials counted only 200 bodies on the morgue train on which

TEL AVIV, Israel--The top U.S. diplomat flew into Israel´s main airport Wednesday despite a Federal Aviation Administration ban in an apparent sign of his determination to achieve a cease-fire agreement in the warring Gaza Strip despite little evidence of progress in ongoing negotiations. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry planned to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon during what appeared to be a crucial day in the flailing talks. U.S. officials have downplayed expectations for an immediate, lasting truce between Israel and the Hamas militant group that controls Gaza.

While I was phoning around this morning for an explanation to why the Government’s latest big IT project has ended with £350 million being flushed down the lavatory, one respected contractor told me: “I just don’t think the UK government should be allowed to buy IT at all. Maybe give them abacuses, but they could still get those wrong.” It’s not just a problem for the UK either. Most nations--but especially the USA--have a woeful record when it comes to IT procurement. In scandal after scandal in the Obama administration, President Obama has said he didn’t know about the problems until he heard it on the news. But the president changed his tune about his supposed ignorance at a Democratic fundraiser near Seattle on Tuesday night. Mr. Obama told supporters that he doesn’t watch the news because, “Whatever they’re reporting about, usually I know.” That contrasts with the explanations that the president and his aides have given from scandals in the past few years ranging from long wait times and deaths at the VA, to the IRS targeting tea party groups, to the

In a potentially crippling blow to Obamacare, a federal appeals court panel declared Tuesday that government subsidies worth billions of dollars that helped 4.7 million people buy insurance on HealthCare.gov are illegal. The 2-1 ruling said such subsidies can be granted only to people who bought insurance in an Obamacare exchange run by an individual state or the District of Columbia—not on the federally run exchange HealthCare.gov. "Section 36B plainly makes subsidies available in the Exchanges established by states," wrote Senior Circuit Judge Raymond Randolph in his majority opinion, where he was joined by Judge Thomas Griffith. The NAACP Legal Defense Fund has filed a class action lawsuit against the city of Detroit for water shutoffs that members claim are racially motivated. The Detroit Water and Sewerage Department stopped service to about 7,200 buildings with overdue bills in June, compared to 1,570 in the same month last year. The issue gained national attention last month after activists appealed to the United Nations for help. The shutoffs are “being done in a discriminatory fashion,” the NAACP’s Veronica Joice told a local CBS affiliate. “They should at least take a look at whether there’s a better way to do this that doesn’t affect the most vulnerable citizens

President Obama told Democratic donors Wednesday night that most Americans don’t have time to think about the details of the Benghazi terrorist attack or the problems with Obamacare. Speaking at a fundraiser at the Los Angeles home of “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal” creator Shonda Rhimes, the president took his usual shots at the Republican Party, suggesting its members are focused on the wrong issues and frequently “obfuscate and they bamboozle and sometimes don’t say what’s true.” And because people are not familiar with the intricacies of many public-policy issues, Republicans can get away with such obfuscation, he said. “The Republican

WASHINGTON —Polarization and partisanship are a plague on American politics. Political scientists have found that the two parties have each grown more ideologically homogeneous since the 1970s. The Senate hasn’t been so polarized since Reconstruction; the House has not been so divided since around 1900. As measured by laws passed, the current Congress is on track to be among the least productive in our republic’s history. How did this happen? One of the main causes has not gotten enough attention: the party primary system. The reasons behind the shocking primary defeat last month of Representative Eric Cantor of Virginia, who
