Side effects: Half of brokers

Puget Sound Business Journal [WA], by Valerie Bauman

Nearly half of insurance brokers polled nationally have considered leaving the industry in the wake of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) – meanwhile, employers say they need them more than ever before, according to a report by Aflac. A potential exodus of brokers could make it more difficult for large and small businesses to lose that expertise just as things are getting really complicated. Brokers help companies give employees the best and most affordable coverage and insure they comply with the complexities of the ACA. Brokers have been on the front lines of the ACA changes that are forcing businesses, hospitals and

Gives new meaning to "white flight". Nelson Mandela was too smart and country-loving to kill or chase off the white businessmen and farm owners.

#1 reminds me...I was speaking to a woman from South Africa yesterday who is now a US legal citizen. Her parents are 3rd generation white farmers in SA. For years they have hired and payed their black neighbors to help work their farm. The government has just taken half of their land and given it to the black neighbors and are forcing her parents to pay the neighbors to work the land even though they no longer own it. They also must pay the other expenses of farming that land, equipment, seed, fuel, etc.

I asked if her parents would be willing it immigrate to America and she said that she had looked into it, but in order to sponsor her parents she needed to have $1 million readily available in a bank account. Which, of course, she has no ability to do. I told her that she should fly them to Mexico and let them walk across the border.

That´s a real fluff piece and not totally accurate.

When they decided that 85% percent of your health insurance premium had to go towards your healthcare, agents were screwed out of commissions. Commissions went down in some cases to $1.50 per subscriber (employees, not families). If you sold to mom and pop businesses, it didn´t pay for the gas to drive there to enroll. That business could be paying over $5k a month while you collect $7.50 in commission.

As far back as two years ago, thousands of agents gave up their license.

AFLAC is always looking for agents. They have so many they are crawling over each other and employers are sick of them. However, they pay good commissions in advance, so those wanting to stay in business flock to AFLAC.

Shootings: ‘Reasonable Fear’

Each time police officers draw their weapons, they step out of everyday law enforcement and into a rigidly defined world where written rules, hours of training and Supreme Court decisions dictate not merely when a gun can be fired, but where it is aimed, how many rounds should be squeezed off and when the shooting should stop. The Ferguson, Mo., police officer who fatally shot an unarmed African-American teenager two weeks ago, setting off protest and riots, was bound by 12 pages of police department regulations, known as General Order 410.00, that govern officers’ use of force. Whether he followed them

MADISON, Wis. – Conservative targets of a Democrat-launched John Doe investigation have described the secret probe as a witch hunt. That might not be a big enough descriptor, based on records released Friday by a federal appeals court as part of a massive document dump. Attorneys for conservative activist Eric O’Keefe and the Wisconsin Club for Growth point to subpoenas requested by John Doe prosecutors that sought records from “at least eight phone companies” believed to serve the targets of the investigation. O’Keefe and the club have filed a civil rights lawsuit against John Doe prosecutors, alleging they violated conservatives’ First Amendment

CAIRO -- The top Islamic authority in Egypt, revered by many Muslims worldwide, launched an Internet-based campaign Sunday challenging an extremist group in Syria and Iraq by saying it should not be called an "Islamic State." The campaign by the Dar el-Ifta, the top authority that advises Muslims on spiritual and life issues, adds to the war of words by Muslim leaders across the world targeting the Islamic State group, which controls wide swaths of Iraq and Syria. Its violent attacks, including mass shootings, destroying Shiite shrines, targeting minorities and beheadings including American journalist James Foley, have shocked Muslims and

Stepping to the pulpit at Greater Grace Church -- minutes from where a suburban St. Louis police officer shot and killed an unarmed black 18-year-old - the Rev. Al Sharpton wielded the fiery words that have marked his long, often notorious career. "These parents are not going to cry alone," he preached to the crowd that packed the pews last Sunday in Ferguson, Missouri. "We have had enough!" But when Sharpton sat down days later with New York´s mayor to discuss the response to a Staten Island man´s death in a police officer´s chokehold, he recalibrated his rhetoric. "We don´t

Noting “the grim history of mass shootings and mass killings that have occurred in more recent times,” U.S. District Court Judge R. Baghdad, Iraq -- As violence continues to wrack Iraq, another ethnic slaughter may be in the making by Sunni extremists from ISIS. ISIS fighters have besieged the ethnic Turkmen Shiite town of Amerli in the north for two months, and its fewer than 20,000 residents are without power and running out of food, water and medical supplies. "The situation of the people in Amerli is desperate and demands immediate action to prevent the possible massacre of its citizens," said Nickolay Mladenov, the U.N. secretary-general´s special representative for Iraq.

Horrific new atrocity photos flowed from the Middle East Friday. Only this time the victims were Palestinians, not Americans, and the killers were from Hamas, not ISIS. Angered by Israel’s successful hit on three of its top commanders in an airstrike, Hamas lined 18 “informers” against a wall and publicly gunned them down. This, declared Hamas, was “revolutionary justice,” vowing that more such killings will follow. Summary executions are nothing new to Hamas, of course. Yet much of the world thinks it’s engaged in legitimate resistance to “Zionist occupation.” And that’s alarming — because it’s becoming increasingly

Sometimes a round of golf is just a round of golf. And sometimes it reveals the essence of a man. President Obama’s decision to hit the links and yuk it up with pals immediately after speaking about the beheading of James Foley was no ordinary mistake. Nor was it a simple gaffe. The decision continues to cause an uproar because, like an X-ray, there is no escaping the image. It shows there is no there there. At last, we know the reason why comedy writers don’t make fun of President Obama much. It turns out the man is completely unmockable. We learn this from Jim Downey, the longtime “Saturday Night Live” specialist in political japery. “If I had to describe Obama as a comedy project, I would say, ‘Degree of difficulty, 10 point 10,’” the writer says in the expanded new edition of the “SNL” oral history book, “Live from New York.” “It’s like being a rock climber looking up at a thousand-foot-high face of solid obsidian, polished and oiled,” Downey says. “There’s not a single thing to grab

The song that carried me through those years and all stages of my life is "Both Sides Now" by Joni Mitchell. I first heard the song in 1968, when Judy Collins´s version was a huge radio hit. We are not engaged in a religious war. This is not a confrontation between Islam and the West. To start from that premise is to place Isil (which should not be called by its presumptive title “Islamic State”) on precisely the ground it wishes to occupy. [Snip] The contest is not modern liberal democracy versus the Dark Ages. This is to impose meaning on what is, in truth, meaningless. There is nothing coherent or comprehensible at the heart of the homicidal Isil frenzy. It is just what it looks like: psychopathic nihilism. Indeed, it may be worse than counterproductive to

Ferguson, MO - Conditions calmed this week in Ferguson after nights of sometimes violent unrest stemming from the fatal shooting of a black 18-year-old by a white police officer. But a delicate and crucial question lingers: What happens if the grand jury now considering the case doesn’t return a charge against the officer? The fear among some local residents and officials trying to maintain peace in Ferguson is that failure to charge the officer could stoke new anger among a community profoundly mistrustful of the legal system. Many say they just hope the grand jury’s decision, whatever it is, has irrefutable facts to back it up.
