Hefty performance bonuses were paid last year to 64 Department of Veterans Affairs medical directors who oversaw hospitals, including some where patient wait lists were falsified and preventable patient deaths occurred, according to data obtained by the Washington Examiner. Also collecting a merit bonus of $12,579 last year was John Pierce, the head of the agency´s medical inspection unit, who retired this month after being slammed by the independent Office of Special Counsel for downplaying whistleblower complaints about inadequate patient care. Almost 300 top managers, members of the Senior Executive Service, collected merit bonuses totaling more than $2.7 million last

The federal government bonuses itself every year, even after pay well above private pay levels, and few if any bonuses in the private sector. The system is filled with corruption where bonuses are awarded by those that receive them.

HOUSTON, Texas--Amid the border crisis, President Obama´s Health and Human Services (HHS) has been quietly releasing illegal immigrant minors onto U.S. soil. According to HHS´ Office of Refugee and Resettlement, a total of 30,340 unaccompanied minors have already been released from federal custody after being placed in a foster home. Although foreign minors have been set free in all 50 states, Texas has received far more than any other U.S. state. As of July 7, 4,280 illegal immigrant minors were released in Texas. WASHINGTON — Michelle Obama called on young African leaders to change traditional attitudes and beliefs that harm girls and women, adding that educating and making women financially literate is not enough. "No country can ever truly flourish if it stifles the potential of its women and deprives itself of the contributions of half of its citizens," Mrs. Obama said. The first lady spoke Wednesday to the inaugural class of young African fellows who are getting six weeks of leadership training in the United States as part of the Mandela Washington Fellowship. President Barack Obama will headline upcoming fundraisers for House and Senate Democrats, with more big dollar events starring the president being planned before Election Day, according to Democratic insiders. Obama will get top billing for an Aug. 29 fundraiser on behalf of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in Newport, Rhode Island, said Democratic sources. The president will also take part in a Sept. 12 fundraiser for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee in Baltimore, the sources added. The Peace Corps announced Wednesday that it was temporarily withdrawing its 340 volunteers in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone after two workers were exposed to the Ebola virus. A spokeswoman told CNN and CBS News that the pair were being isolated after coming in contact with an infected patient who later died. The two have not exhibited symptoms, however, and will be sent back the United States after doctors clear them. The Peace Corps did not indicate when the volunteers might return to West Africa, where the growing outbreak is centered. "The agency has been and will continue to closely

Sens. Rand Paul (R-KY) and Cory Booker (D-NJ) brought their bipartisan push for criminal justice reform (a noble cause, if you ask us) to MSNBC’s The Cycle on Wednesday afternoon. While the conversation was mostly cordial and illuminating, it took a brief turn for the tense when Ari Melber found a way to bring up Sen. Paul’s controversial 2010 comments to Rachel Maddow about the Civil Rights Act. Directly after the libertarian-leaning senator made the case that prison reform is a civil rights issue, Melber transitioned: “As we’re talking about restoring civil rights here, you stirred up a lot of

The West´s coverage of the African Ebola outbreak-- now claiming more than 600 lives-- has focused extensively on the facts: the symptoms, victims, and the potential of it spreading past the continent. In the four affected countries, however, the media has written everything from warnings to avoid witch doctors to urgent calls for prayer. In Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Nigeria-- the four countries to have registered individuals contaminated with Ebola since the outbreak began in March, the media has focused on various localized aspects of the disease. Some have focused on warning readers how to avoid the Ebola virus

In one bitter exchange, Obama declared that Qatar and Turkey — Hamas’ biggest international supporters — would mediate with the terrorists on Israel’s behalf, according to the TV channel. “I trust Qatar and Turkey. It began five years ago with an unexpected windfall of stimulus money from Washington, D.C., and good intentions to help the district’s students,
