Transforming the VA
will be daunting task

Arizona Republic [Phoenix, AZ], by Craig Harris & Michelle Ye Hee Lee

Original Article

It seems nearly every day there´s more bad news about the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and how it has treated those who served in the military. Whether it´s confirmation that veterans died while awaiting care, patient wait-time records being manipulated to trigger staff bonuses, or the VA consistently ignoring whistle-blower warnings about dangerous practices, it´s been a particularly embarrassing time for the VA. In Congress, a bipartisan House and Senate committee met for the first time June 24 to craft legislation to change the way the nation´s largest integrated health-care system does business. The goal is to get a

It won´t be daunting at all. Just like the corruption at the IRS, the only way to ´transform´ it is to increase their budget. Because, you see, they wouldn´t have to be so corrupt if they had more money .

The level of reform needed here goes to the heart of the bureaucracy and reallocation of power. That will be resisted to an unimaginable level both in the bureaucracy and the Legislative Committees that oversee it. They will try to maintain both while doing nothing hoping that this goes away in the attention span of the public. YOU CAN TRUST NONE OF THEM TO MAKE IT BETTER.

That shouldn´t be too hard. Start firing managers and supervisors at all levels. After about 20% of them are gone, the rest will straighten right up.

As with every government enterprise, there is easily 20% of fat in the management ranks. They can take the loss, plus think of the salary and bonus savings.

FTA: "Lawmakers are considering a VA package that some congressional analysts say will cost more than $35 billion. Even if lawmakers pay for more doctors, specialists and nurses and implement changes making it easier to fire hospital administrators and managers, will it be enough?"
The approach is wrong. Choke it off and give vets vouchers for private insurance or medical treatment at civilian facilities.

Grampy:

Exactly. That would fulfill the solution dictated by Occam´s Razor. That´s the problem. It feeds neither the bureaucracy nor the Political Power Structure. I expect that it would take about a week to run the traps to make a voucher system work. Though the Veterans would be helped enormously, the power elite would lose. Of course, we can´t have that.

As ever, the military takes the lead in facing danger for the country, and takes many casualties in defense of the people.

It is clear who the enemy is here and hopefully the VA´s oppressive footprint is radically reduced, with competitive options soon available for vets to choose from starting with their personal doctor, their preferred care facility, lab tests etc.

“Zone of Interest” is Martin Amis’ tour de force, but it couldn’t have happened without the influence of Peter Foges, Christopher Hitchens and others. In the years after the war, Britain was awash with stories and images of Nazi hell. The war crimes trials had revealed the full horror of what Hitler had done. Books like Lord Russell of Liverpool’s “Scourge of the Swastika” made the front pages and topped best-seller lists for months. When he was five, Martin Amis saw one of these lurid accounts accompanied by pictures of the railway tracks and crematoria of Auschwitz. Unable to understand them

On the polling front this weekend, Republicans have a few reasons to celebrate. Last week, the building blocks of the narrowest Republican Senate majority were clearly coming together. This week, polls indicate that Republicans have a number of avenues to pursue in their quest to win back the majority. In Louisiana, Rep. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) has significantly narrowed the gap with Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA), but that race looks set to head to a runoff. A CNN/ORC survey released on Sunday shows Cassidy and Landrieu statistically tied with 40 to 43 percent support respectively. That poll also revealed that retired

The crash of a bus and a tractor-trailer that left four Texas college softball players dead and 15 others injured is "being investigated like a homicide," police said today, as officials try to piece together what happened. The early indication is that the tractor-trailer crossed over Interstate 35, into the southbound lanes, near the Oklahoma-Texas border, and struck a bus owned by North Central Texas College that was carrying the team back to campus after a game Friday evening. "We just know that the semi impacted the bus and the bus was traveling southbound on the interstate when the collision occurred," Oklahoma

In most of its details, the domestic-violence case of Mark Fuller was not all that unusual. One night in August, a woman called 911 from a hotel room in Atlanta, pleading for help, because a man was beating her. When the police arrived, Fuller’s wife, Kelli, opened the door. She had “visible lacerations to her mouth and forehead,” the police report said. During an argument in which she had accused her husband of infidelity, the report continued, she said that he “threw her to the ground and kicked her. Mrs. Fuller also stated she was dragged around the room and Mr. Fuller hit her in the mouth several times with his hands.

But, as tends to happen in these situations, he’s been a bit overrated in much of the sermonizing of his career over the past several months. Sermonizing that will mercifully come to an end this afternoon at Fenway Park. His walk-off hit Thursday night at Yankee Stadium was special, even for those who have lived to hate the guy in a sports context over the past two decades. We’re being had. Again. For six years, President Obama has endeavored to will the country into accepting two pillars of his alternative national-security reality. First, he claims to have dealt decisively with the terrorist threat, rendering it a disparate series of ragtag jayvees. Second, he asserts that the threat is unrelated to Islam, which is innately peaceful, moderate, and opposed to the wanton “violent extremists” who purport to act in its name. Now, the president has been compelled to act against a jihad that has neither ended nor been “decimated.” The jihad, in fact, has inevitably intensified under his counterfactual

When the U.S. military strikes, its leaders often choose colorful code names for the operation that sometimes stick in history, like Operation Overlord or Rolling Thunder or Desert Storm. Not this time. The U.S.-led air campaign against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria doesn´t have a name. "I know of no plans at this point to name it," Pentagon spokesman Rear Adm. John Kirby said Thursday. Since World War II, almost every U.S. military operation, large and small, has had a code name. Political pollsters have a tough job. They have to create formulas to determine if the person they are interviewing is likely to vote, and it is within this calculation that their reputations are made. Typically, those who are likely to vote in an off-year election are pretty set. They are the people who always vote in elections — with some motivated by specific issues. In a wave election, the number of those motivated by specific issues escalates, changing the electoral landscape as the candidates who are beneficiaries of this increased participation sweep to victory. The 2014 election is rapidly looking like something new
