Transforming the VA
will be daunting task

Arizona Republic [Phoenix, AZ], by Craig Harris & Michelle Ye Hee Lee

Original Article

It seems nearly every day there´s more bad news about the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and how it has treated those who served in the military. Whether it´s confirmation that veterans died while awaiting care, patient wait-time records being manipulated to trigger staff bonuses, or the VA consistently ignoring whistle-blower warnings about dangerous practices, it´s been a particularly embarrassing time for the VA. In Congress, a bipartisan House and Senate committee met for the first time June 24 to craft legislation to change the way the nation´s largest integrated health-care system does business. The goal is to get a

It won´t be daunting at all. Just like the corruption at the IRS, the only way to ´transform´ it is to increase their budget. Because, you see, they wouldn´t have to be so corrupt if they had more money .

The level of reform needed here goes to the heart of the bureaucracy and reallocation of power. That will be resisted to an unimaginable level both in the bureaucracy and the Legislative Committees that oversee it. They will try to maintain both while doing nothing hoping that this goes away in the attention span of the public. YOU CAN TRUST NONE OF THEM TO MAKE IT BETTER.

That shouldn´t be too hard. Start firing managers and supervisors at all levels. After about 20% of them are gone, the rest will straighten right up.

As with every government enterprise, there is easily 20% of fat in the management ranks. They can take the loss, plus think of the salary and bonus savings.

FTA: "Lawmakers are considering a VA package that some congressional analysts say will cost more than $35 billion. Even if lawmakers pay for more doctors, specialists and nurses and implement changes making it easier to fire hospital administrators and managers, will it be enough?"
The approach is wrong. Choke it off and give vets vouchers for private insurance or medical treatment at civilian facilities.

Grampy:

Exactly. That would fulfill the solution dictated by Occam´s Razor. That´s the problem. It feeds neither the bureaucracy nor the Political Power Structure. I expect that it would take about a week to run the traps to make a voucher system work. Though the Veterans would be helped enormously, the power elite would lose. Of course, we can´t have that.

As ever, the military takes the lead in facing danger for the country, and takes many casualties in defense of the people.

It is clear who the enemy is here and hopefully the VA´s oppressive footprint is radically reduced, with competitive options soon available for vets to choose from starting with their personal doctor, their preferred care facility, lab tests etc.

The conflict in eastern Ukraine is entering a new and highly dangerous phase. The Ukrainian army is poised for the final drive into Donetsk, the capital of Russian-backed separatists. A convoy of some 40 Russian vehicles, including two dozen armored personnel carriers and support trucks, was reported entering Ukrainian territory where it was shelled by Ukrainian artillery. The Ukrainian government says it destroyed several vehicles, and almost certainly there have been losses among Russian military personnel. Russian President Vladimir Putin, meanwhile, addressed Russian parliamentarians in Crimea, apparently assembled there to demonstrate that the Black Sea territory is Russian, period. Kyiv

NBC News reports: U.S. Army Major General Harold Greene was buried today at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors, including a caisson, two escort platoons, casket team, firing party, colors team, and a caparisoned horse. The U.S. Army band, “Pershing’s Own,” played softly as the funeral procession made its way down the long hill past the rows of simple white gravestones to bring General Greene to his final resting place. The graveside service began with a few words, followed by a 13-gun salute. The major general’s widow, Dr. Susan Myers, was seated in the front row. To her right

It may be the least of HealthCare.gov’s many, many problems, but the Obamacare website still features web pages full of nonsense filler language. The Weekly Standard located a series of pages on HealthCare.gov that feature ‘Lorem ipsum’ text, a dummy language used by graphic designers to hold a place until the information is ready. The website’s instructions on “How to appeal a Marketplace decision, directions for immigrants and, most ironically, “Why Health Coverage is Important” are filled with “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…” instead of any information on getting health coverage.

Planned Parenthood calls abortion “a difficult decision” in many of its consent forms and fact sheets. When NARAL launched a film on the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade in 2013, the president of the pro-choice organization called abortion “a difficult decision” women and couples face. Lawmakers use the adjective, too. “It was a difficult, difficult decision, but it was the right one,” Nevada Assemblywoman Lucy Flores said last month in defending her choice to have an abortion at age 16. In 2005, then-Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton described the decision to have an abortion as “one of the most fundamental, difficult

The scandal that erupted Friday night involved millions of dollars, statehouse power plays—oh yeah, and alcohol, police, and masks. Texas Governor Rick Perry was indicted Friday on charges of abuse of power—a first degree felony—and coercion—a third degree felony. The charges stem from a 2013 scandal that has been quietly rumbling in the Lone Star State as Perry has been floated as a viable contender for the Republican nomination in 2016. This is a complex case, which might be why it has not made national headlines the way other recent, state-level scandals (like Bridgegate, in New Jersey) have. Below, I have outlined

In a unique battlefield commendation, a Marine Corps member of Delta Force has been awarded the nation’s second-highest military honor for coming to the defense of Americans last year at a CIA annex in Benghazi, Libya. Delta Force, a counterterrorism unit in the secretive Joint Special Operations Command, has been thought of as a strictly Army outfit. But it does take on qualified commandos from other services. The Washington Times has reported that two Delta Force members were among a seven-person rescue team sent from the U.S. Embassy in Tripoli to Benghazi on the night of Sept. 11, 2012. It was once said, during the time when Maine’s governor’s race was conducted almost two months earlier than the November presidential race, that “as Maine goes, so goes the nation.” Will that be the case this year with North Carolina? There is news this week that Democrats will invest a stunning $9.1 million to back first-term incumbent Senator Kay Hagan in North Carolina. Hagan is being challenged by Republican state House Speaker Thom Tillis. This occurs just after the latest Washington Post Election Lab survey rates Hagan’s chances of re-election at 99%. A Travis County grand jury today indicted Gov. Rick Perry on two charges related to his effort last year to force District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg to resign after her drunken driving arrest. Grand jurors charged Perry, 63, with abuse of official capacity, a first-degree felony, and coercion of a public official. The indictments stemmed from Perry’s threat last summer to withhold $7.2 million in state money from Lehmberg’s office unless she step down – a threat he later carried out by vetoing an appropriation in the state budget. The money was earmarked for the state’s Public Integrity Unit, which is housed in Lehmberg’s office. Perry’s veto forced

This is ridiculous. AUSTIN (KXAN) – A grand jury has handed up an indictment against Gov. Perry wanted Lehmberg to resign because she had been busted for drunk driving. It’s not good to have a drunk driver, captured on camera abusing the officers who arrested her, heading up the Public Integrity Unit. At the center of the issue is a complaint about intimidation stemming from Perry’s threat to veto of $7.5 million in state funding to the Public Integrity Unit
