UN Pushes For Migrants

Associated Press, by Alberto Arce & Marcos Aleman

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica -- United Nations officials are pushing for many of the Central Americans fleeing to the U.S. to be treated as refugees displaced by armed conflict, a designation meant to increase pressure on the United States to accept tens of thousands of people currently ineligible for asylum. Officials with the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees say they hope to see a regional agreement on that status Thursday when migration and interior department representatives from the U.S., Mexico, and Central America meet in Nicaragua. The group will discuss updating a 30-year-old declaration regarding the obligations nations have to aid

The UN feels and has felt that the USA is too powerful. The UN sees the world being run by the UN and we are in the way of that happening. So what it can do to lower the USA’s ability to influence world policy will move the UN desire to run things. Running thousands of third world folks on us will eat up capital that will, in the end, limit us.

Someone made a good point on Rush. If the U.N. Is so concerned about human rights . Why don´t they go to Mexico or Central America and tell those governments to stop the abuse?

David Gregory wasn’t supposed to host “Meet the Press” on Sunday. He was on a planned vacation in Nantucket, where, the night before, he had hosted a special presentation of the Boston Pops, sponsored by Coastal Living and Real Simple. Midway through the week, however, Gregory changed his mind. His fate at “Meet the Press” had been the subject of numerous press reports. Page Six and others had declared him dead in the water come November. Several NBC personalities were already vying to replace him. Gregory was chartered back to Washington for Sunday’s program, having concluded, one NBC source said, that

UPDATED: With statements from McDaniel spokesman Noel Fritsch As Chris McDaniel´s team continues to scour voting records to add to an expected legal challenge of his loss to Thad Cochran, it has listed McDaniel´s lead lawyer in the challenge, and his wife, as irregular votes that should be tossed out. McDaniel lawyer Mitchell H. "Mitch" Tyner Sr. on Monday sent Cochran´s attorneys additional affidavits listing hundreds more alleged illegal or irregular votes from the June 24 runoff. Problem is, Tyner and his wife, Sloane Tyner, were flagged by a McDaniel volunteer as "CROSSOVER/IRREGULAR VOTING" in one of the new affidavits claiming problems with Madison

In a fine piece of long journalism, Tampa Bay Times reporters Adam Smith and Michael Kruse provide Floridians with everything they need to know about Charlie Crist in a bit more than 10,000 well-chosen words. It’s not a pretty picture. But then regular TAS readers already know this, as do Floridians paying the slightest attention. “Knowing Charlie,” which begins on page one of last Sunday’s Times is a lot more than the usual journalistic he-said, she-said, and re-write from the files. It is the result of months of work by the two reporters, interviewing Crist’s supporters and detractors, as well as

Obama’s Immigration Plan

The Obama years have taught us the sometimes frightening lesson that our Constitution and legal structure alone don’t secure the Republic. We also depend on norms — or an implied understanding of what sort of behavior is acceptable. Liberals have given this problem special attention, as Republicans have carried out most of the norm-violating. It turns out to be perfectly legal for a party that controls just one wing of Congress to announce that, unless the president offers up ideological concessions, they will unleash a potential worldwide economic calamity. There is likewise nothing in the Constitution stopping the opposition party

The Christian right has some things figured out. These days, Christian entertainment isn’t just the didactic “700 Club” — it includes spectacles as high-flying as History’s miniseries “The Bible” or as wacky as GSN’s “American Bible Challenge.” If these entertainments, relying as they do on knowledge of the source material, do any converting, that’s a fringe benefit; they exist to further galvanize the faithful in their beliefs. American atheists haven’t learned from these projects, it seems. The recently-launched AtheistTV, which is available over the Internet and through the Roku streaming device, frames itself as an outreach project of sorts. It consists

Russia said Tuesday that it had dispatched 280 trucks full of humanitarian aid to eastern Ukraine, after NATO´s secretary-general warned that there was a "high probability" that Moscow would order troops to the war-torn region to aid separatist rebels. Russian television reported early Tuesday that trucks carrying 2,000 tons of humanitarian aid were headed to Ukraine. Reporters said the convoy of trucks, painted white and bearing a red cross, is part of an internationally agreed-upon mission under the auspices of the International Committee of the Red Cross. NTV television showed hundreds of white trucks gathered at a depot outside Moscow, and said

Now there is a mission to recover the fallen. In November 1943, 18,000 U.S. Marines stormed the Pacific island of Tarawa. It was so heavily fortified that a Japanese commander boasted it would take a million men a hundred years to take the island. It took the Marines three days. Jim Morrow was one of those Marines. Wherever you look these days, the world seems like it’s on fire. New hot spots like Russia and Ukraine are competing with the old ones like Gaza and festering conflicts like those in Syria and Iraq – especially Iraq – are getting much worse. Even Afghanistan, which seemed in better shape than the other places, had a setback this past week. So, is there any good news out there? In fact, there is. Some of the most important countries in the world are making remarkable progress, affecting at least 1.5 billion people. Let´s start with Indonesia, the largest Muslim country in the world

When President Obama announced airstrikes this week in Iraq to address the humanitarian crisis and contain the alarming expansion of the Islamic State across Iraq, his reluctance was visible as he repeatedly said he would not send ground troops in Iraq. It was an ironic twist for a president who defeated Hillary Rodham Clinton in the 2008 presidential race in part because of his vow to withdraw U.S troops from Iraq, a conflict for which Clinton had voted as a senator. But as he steps into the quagmire in Iraq, the term-limited president will not have to face war-weary voters

President Obama has long ridiculed the idea that the U.S., early in the Syrian civil war, could have shaped the forces fighting the Assad regime, thereby stopping al Qaeda-inspired groups—like the one rampaging across Syria and Iraq today—from seizing control of the rebellion. In an interview in February, the president told me that “when you have a professional army ... fighting against a farmer, a carpenter, an engineer who started out as protesters and suddenly now see themselves in the midst of a civil conflict—the notion that we could have, in a clean way that didn’t commit U.S. military forces,

If I remember correctly, George Will once referred to a book by Jean-François Revel as “a fire bell in the night.” (The phrase comes from Thomas Jefferson.) Well, something called the National Defense Panel has issued a fire bell in the night. But I don’t think anyone will hear it. Because a) it’s a government report and b) it’s a government report that people aren’t disposed to hear. No one wanted to hear George W. Bush talk about the collapse of Social Security: because Social Security hadn’t collapsed yet. And no one wants to hear about the diminished state of

Three-time champ Tony Stewart is reviled—and beloved—for his take-no-prisoners, borderline-unhinged attitude. But we may never know whether he hit Kevin Ward deliberately. We all know how dangerous competitive racing can be. It’s not a regular occurrence, nor is it in any way the reason NASCAR has vaulted to the second-most watched sport in the United States behind football, but when you have drivers barreling down the track at speeds that can approach 200 miles per hour, the question is not if but when a horrific death will occur. What you don’t expect is for a car to collide with an unprotected driver.

It’s official: Obamaism is dead. Hillary Clinton killed it. It wasn’t so much a mercy killing as an expedient one, but that’s politics in the best sense. The important thing is that she broke the Democratic omertà code by stating the obvious: The president’s policy of having America sit on the sidelines of a burning world is a disaster that threatens our national security. The power of her argument is confirmed by a report that a testy Obama called it “horses–t” to congressional leaders. The president who spent years touting the withdrawal of all U.S. forces from Iraq suddenly has had to distance himself from that action. At the White House on Saturday morning — less than 48 hours after authorizing airstrikes against Islamist militants and humanitarian air drops to save the lives of trapped Iraqi civilians — President Obama blamed his predecessor, George W. Bush, for the absence of American troops in Iraq and rejected the assertion that he could have left a small peacekeeping force in the war-torn nation. President Obama got angry at lawmakers who suggested in a private meeting that he should have armed the Syrian rebels, calling the criticism “horseshit.” The argument that America should have done more in Syria, made for years by foreign policy leaders in both parties and several members of Obama’s senior national security team, was brought back to the fore this past weekend. She doesn’t name names there, but she’s been known to diverge from grassroots conservatives in these matters before. What would happen, though, if Boehner turned around and made a deal with Harry Reid on amnesty in September? One of the goals of Obama’s looming power grab over legalization is to scare Republican leaders with the thought that Latino voters will be so grateful, they’ll break even harder for Democrats in 2016. In addition, 15 percent of its overall workforce is Asian, 11 percent is Hispanic, and 7 percent is Black. The eruption of protests and violence has been a long time coming. While I certainly do not condone rioting, examining the conditions surrounding Brown’s death — and the deaths of several other unarmed black men killed by law enforcement recently — makes clear that community reactions like those in Ferguson, Mo., are bound to happen. America has continued to isolate poor black people in economically depressed neighborhoods under increasingly oppressive police tactics that breed
