Uber Slashes New York Fares,
Now Cheaper Than Taxi

Boston Globe [MA], by Laura Reston

Uber’s war against entrenched taxi companies saw its most recent move Monday when the company announced that it would slash prices 20 percent in New York City. An UberX, the cheapest ride offered by the company, is now several dollars cheaper than a traditional taxi in New York City, where yellow cabs are still a staple, Uber says. Uber slashed its prices in Boston last month, knocking rates down a full 25 percent. The change would make an UberX trip from Copley Square to Harvard Square only $10. A taxi, the company says, would cost $17. San Francisco, where Uber was incubated, boasts an even more drastic disparity between

I wish Uber would start up around here (Greater Charleston). If I need to see my doc in North Charleston, I have to go through bits of three small towns which cluster together. Yellow Cab charges $2 for brushing against each town plus mileage. Very expensive. A 2-mile trip to the neighborhood shopping center just over the line into N. Charleston costs $8 plus a tip. And the service isn´t the greatest.

Y´all come down here, Uber. We have plenty of geezettes who can´t drive any more and need an affordable taxi service.

A Canadian imam known for his pacifist sermons has warned that Islamist militant group IS was actively recruiting in Canada and said one member issued him a death threat. Syed Soharwardy, founder of the Islamic Supreme Council of Canada (ISCC), called on Canadian and Western authorities to intensify the fight against jihadist movements. "Absolutely I am convinced that this recruitment is going on right here in this country, under our noses, in our universities, in our colleges, in the places of worship, in our community," he told CBC public television. Soharwardy added that a Muslim man from Ottawa who was fighting with IS

The Pentagon on Friday blamed China for instigating a hair-raising incident in which a Chinese J-11B fighter jet buzzed a U.S. Navy P-8 Poseidon plane on Tuesday some 130 miles east of China’s Hainan Island. The atoll is southwest of Hong Kong in the South China Sea, and the incident occurred over international waters, said Rear Adm. John Kirby, the Pentagon press secretary. As noted in this story by The Washington Post’s Craig Whitlock, the fighter jet brought one of its wingtips within 20 feet of the Poseidon, a Boeing 737 that has been adopted to perform reconnaissance and surveillance missions and hunt for enemy submarines.

Miami - In a blow to Florida Democrats, a state judge on Friday approved a slightly modified congressional map drawn by the Republican-dominated Legislature and decided that the 2014 election could proceed under the old map, which he had ruled unconstitutional. Two days after a sharply partisan hearing on the new map, Terry P. Lewis, a state judge in Leon County, concluded that the rejiggered boundaries for seven districts, while not perfect, “sufficiently” addressed his constitutional concerns. (Snip) He ruled that the Legislature is not required “to produce a map that the plaintiffs, or I, or anyone else might prefer.”

Selma, AL - An Alabama teacher was suspended without pay after being accused of having sixth-grade students re-enact the deadly police shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and the Trayvon Martin killing in Florida. The Selma Times-Journal quoted Dallas County School Superintendent Don Willingham as saying the social studies teacher used poor judgment during a lesson on current events. School officials haven´t identified the teacher, who works at Brantley Elementary School. Santa Barbara County officials issued an arrest warrant Friday for a 24-year-old man who stopped treatment for tuberculosis and who they say poses a public health risk. Agustin Zeferino, 24, received "extensive" information and medication for his illness, but he discontinued his treatment, public health officials said. He has not been seen for two weeks. Authorities checked his last known address but have not been able to locate him, said Susan Klein-Rothschild, a spokeswoman for the Santa Barbara County Health Department. If he does not continue his treatment, she said his lung condition could worsen, he could die or he

Nearly two weeks after Michael Brown’s death, a police report on the shooting has finally been made public. But the glaring lack of detail is likely to increase widespread criticism that the law-enforcement community is closing ranks around Darren Wilson, the officer who fatally shot Brown on Aug. 9. The incident report, filed by the St. Louis County police department, contains no new information on the encounter between Brown and Wilson. There are no written details about the event. As a result, the officer’s account of what transpired when the two men met just after noon on Aug. 9 remains a mystery.

Mexico City - Mexican avocados, on their journey to guacamole bowls the world over, often first pass through cartel-controlled farmlands, where extortion can raise prices, drag down the economy and put farmers at risk. The same goes for limes from Michoacan, sorghum from Tamaulipas, shrimp from Sinaloa. Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto on Friday announced the inauguration of a new police unit intended to protect the production chain and take on other unorthodox assignments. Nieto said Friday that the new force will “serve and protect Mexicans in areas where it is needed, or where institutions are weak.”

He calls it an "anti-fraud system" like the fingerprint scan the country uses for voting. In announcing the plan late Wednesday, Maduro did not say when the system would take effect, but other administration officials suggested it could be in place by December or January.
