Uber Slashes New York Fares,
Now Cheaper Than Taxi

Boston Globe [MA], by Laura Reston

Original Article

Uber’s war against entrenched taxi companies saw its most recent move Monday when the company announced that it would slash prices 20 percent in New York City. An UberX, the cheapest ride offered by the company, is now several dollars cheaper than a traditional taxi in New York City, where yellow cabs are still a staple, Uber says. Uber slashed its prices in Boston last month, knocking rates down a full 25 percent. The change would make an UberX trip from Copley Square to Harvard Square only $10. A taxi, the company says, would cost $17. San Francisco, where Uber was incubated, boasts an even more drastic disparity between

I wish Uber would start up around here (Greater Charleston). If I need to see my doc in North Charleston, I have to go through bits of three small towns which cluster together. Yellow Cab charges $2 for brushing against each town plus mileage. Very expensive. A 2-mile trip to the neighborhood shopping center just over the line into N. Charleston costs $8 plus a tip. And the service isn´t the greatest.

Y´all come down here, Uber. We have plenty of geezettes who can´t drive any more and need an affordable taxi service.

Brussels - European Union leaders on Sunday gave Russia a week to reverse course in Ukraine or face a new round of sanctions as Kiev warned it was on the brink of "full-scale war" with Moscow. Fears are growing that the confrontation on the EU´s eastern borders could engulf the whole continent after Russia sent troops to back a new offensive by pro-Kremlin rebels in southeastern Ukraine. EU President Herman Van Rompuy said the 28 leaders meeting in Brussels agreed to take "further significant steps" if Moscow did not back down. Cairo - An Egyptian court sentenced Mohamed Badie, general guide of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, and seven others to life in prison on Saturday for inciting violence during protests last year, judicial sources said. Badie had already been sentenced to death and received a life sentence in other cases, part of Cairo´s toughest crackdown - widely criticised by human rights groups - on the country´s oldest and most organised Islamist movement. The judge, Mohamed Nagi Shehata, also sentenced six other defendants to death in absentia. Badie was charged with killing at least nine people and inciting violence that injured 21 others in

California´s ´yes means yes´ bill:

California will become the first state to require colleges and universities to set a standard of “affirmative consent” for sexual activity, if a bill passed Thursday is signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown (D). The mantra for rape prevention on college campuses used to be “no means no.” But prevention advocates have been pushing for a shift to “yes means yes.” It’s about “making it clear that the responsibility for sexual violence should be placed on the perpetrator ... and people should have the right to be free from sexual impositions,” says Laura Dunn, a campus rape survivor and legal advocate through the group SurvJustice.

Then came the funeral of a healer in Guinea. Kraft Foods Group has announced a recall of 7,691 cases of its popular single-slice American cheese. The food giant says it is ordering the recall of select varieties of regular Kraft American Singles Pasteurized Prepared Cheese Product after discovering a supplier apparently did not store an ingredient at the correct temperature. As a result, it says, some of the cheese could have spoiled and cause illness. The recall applies to Kraft American Singles in the 12-, 16- or 24-ounce size if it has a "best when used by" date of Feb. 20, 2015. In the case of the 12-ounce size, the date could also be Feb. 21. During the Great Depression, the Communist scribes at the Daily Worker were forever assuring the more skeptical among their colleagues that the heroic spark was near. Having read about a “small riot somewhere in rural Minnesota,” Whittaker Chambers recorded in Witness, Robert Minor started shouting about “the beginning of the American revolution.” If the paper wished to capitalize upon dissatisfaction and spin it into insurrection and change, Minor proposed, it would need the staff to keep an eye out for the tell-tale sign and, then, to “play it up big.” Over the past month, the events in Ferguson, Mo., have played

Watching the events unfold in Ferguson, Missouri, I can’t help thinking about the Holocaust and post-war Germany. As the daughter of a Holocaust survivor, I’ve spent years watching Germany wrestle with its dark past. It’s just one of many places that have made efforts to understand and compensate for a difficult history: For nearly three decades, countries as varied as South Africa, Rwanda, and the nations of Latin America and post-Communist Eastern Europe have been engaged in this process, often called “transitional justice.” That’s a broad term for the ways in which societies deal with the legacies of past injustice.

It will take two decades to rebuild the thousands of houses destroyed during Israel’s assault on Gaza, according to a recent NGO report. At least 17,000 homes were obliterated or severely damaged during the conflict, with thousands more needing substantial repairs, according to an assessment by Shelter Cluster. More than 2,100 Palestinians, most of them civilians, were killed during the conflict. In addition 71 Israelis were killed – all but six of them soldiers. But the report on Gaza’s housing stock indicates inhabitants of the densely populated strip will face a severe infrastructural burden over the coming years.
