Rand Paul, Marco Rubio, and the
new era of conservative policy ideas

The Week, by W. James Antle, III

Original Article

The Rand Paul–Mike Lee policy partnership has been the most important Republican collaboration in Washington in recent memory. They have tried subtly — and sometimes not so subtly — to change the Republican brand by applying conservative and libertarian principles differently than the party has in the past. The two Tea Party senators have worked together on civil liberties, opposing the Patriot Act, attempting to rein in the National Security Agency, speaking out against extrajudicial killings of American citizens, protesting warrantless searches, and trying to strip indefinite detention from the National Defense Authorization Act. Paul and Lee have also taken the lead

It´s true Rand Paul won his election as a Tea Party candidate and wrote a book, The Tea Party Goes to Washington. But after that Rand Paul sold out and became the worst of the Establishment. His family´s campaign guru signed on to McConnell´s campaign and Rand endorsed McConnell´s re-election. Rand Paul exemplifies the worst in politics, now goes around spouting Bush/Barbour talking points about how we have to change for the GOP to grow. We already grew the GOP. In Nov. 2010 we rescued the GOP from near extinction after its 2006 and 2008 losses. They didn´t want what we gave them. Rand Paul knows this which is why he sold out. Nothing he says can be taken seriously.

I can have serious reservations about Rand Paul´s suitability for the presidency, but his endorsement of his fellow Kentucky Senator isn´t one of them. That kind of courtesy is often paid. Remember Sarah Palin endorsing McCain for reelection? I thought that was a loyal gesture, too.

The real ideas people are those who have learned how little Washington can fix things. A commitment to supply side economics is refreshing, but the people who have implemented change as legislators and governors--- Jindal and Walker, those are ideas guys. Recycling go along to get along, stewardship republicanism of the Bush ears needs to be buried in the back yard.

Marco Rubio is no conservative. He showed himself to be one sneaky character.

Nobody who favors amnesty or wants special rewards for illegal aliens (like the Dream act that is a nightmare for our future) is at best a "pretend conservative to win an election but has a dangerous agenda."

It is not the Taliban but our unprotected border and the illegal aliens who pose the gravest danger to our future.

How Hobby Lobby Split the

In the Hobby Lobby decision handed down last month, the Supreme Court was asked to strike a balance between women’s rights and religious freedom. But the major conflict that has erupted in the wake of that decision has been between religious freedom and gay rights. The resulting controversy has split gay-rights and faith groups on the left, with wide-ranging political fallout that some now fear could hurt both causes. One chapter of the controversy is set to close on Monday, when President Obama plans to sign a long-awaited executive order banning federal contractors from discriminating against gays and lesbians, according to

How Obama Questions Your Patriotism

So Barack Obama is again using one of the most contemptible phrases in American politics — "economic patriotism." There are many credible reasons to despise this rhetorical construct. Patriotism, after all, is the attachment to one´s homeland, a nationalistic devotion to one´s country and the values that make it great. If a person not only resists things that are "patriotic" but opposes them, then logic dictates that the person is being unpatriotic. So the president is really asking one question: Why do you hate America? Instead of protecting tax loopholes that let corporations keep their profits overseas, let´s put some of that

Bill Alverson has advice for everyone. But if you ask for it, be forewarned that you might not like it. “Clean up your Facebook — it’s too narcissistic.” (To an aspiring Miss Alabama who posted pictures of herself in crown and gown.) “You have got to lose the ebonics!” (To a woman vying to be Miss Mississippi.) “That’s fine, because you’re not a chunker. If you had a weight problem, I’d say you have to lay off all the croissants.” (To a 10-year-old dreaming of a baking career.) For this, he charges $125 an hour. Move over, Texas A&M. Or, as Forbes.com put it, this is certainly an atypical development. The business website reported late this past week that, earlier this month, the United States Trademark and Patent Office “granted registration of the [Hog Call] sensory mark to the Board of Trustees of the University of Arkansas.” Not the words, mind you; the sound. The sounds contained within the chant — Woooooooo, Pig! Sooie! Woooooooo, Pig! Sooie! Woooooooo, Pig! Sooie! Razorbacks! — are now a registered trademark. According to Forbes, the university filed for the trademark in July of 2013. As part of its case, UA submitted a

Everyone I’ve met during my two-plus months in Florida has been touched by dementia. Not a few people, or nearly everyone, but — Every. Single. Person. A cleaning lady that helped me get my parents’ home ready for sale said her father had dementia, like my mother. “Does your mom scream at night?” she asked me. “No, but she sees things, hallucinations,” I said. “Oh,” she said, “that’s not so bad. My dad was a screamer, all night every night.” The tile repairman who fixed up the front walkway said his mother went into the darkness early, just in her 60s. She

TOREZ, Ukraine - An unknown number of bodies from the Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 crash have been loaded onto refrigerator wagons for transportation about ten miles south of where the plane fell when a missile downed it on Thursday. BuzzFeed saw monitors from the OSCE, a security agency with observer status in the east Ukraine conflict, inspect three large gray railway cars at the train station in Torez on Saturday morning. Heavily armed, well-trained rebels opened the doors, letting off a foul stench of decomposition inside. It was unclear whether the refrigeration was working. Candy Crowley got quite a surprise when she pushed John Kerry on whether the United States was comfortable with the scale of Israel’s military response to Hamas terrorists lobbing missiles indiscriminately into their land. Kerry explained why Israel was right to defend her citizens, and then told Candy that the terrorists in Gaza purposely maximize civilian casualties among their own people in order to elicit exactly the kind of questions she’s asking. I doubt she liked that very much.

In their denouncements of the Supreme Court’s Hobby Lobby ruling, Hillary Clinton and other Democrats have been accused of pandering to single women — the so-called “Beyoncé voter” demographic, as one Fox News commentator sniggered. But you know what? If you were running for office, you’d be wooing us single ladies, too. After all, we — unlike those democratic deadbeats known as men — show up to vote. Maybe that’s a little harsh. But the truth is that women vote in higher numbers than men do. We have in every presidential election since 1980, and the gap has widened over

‘The bear is loose!” President Obama has been saying, whenever he leaves the White House to visit Starbucks, or sandwich shops, or burger joints, or BBQ shacks, or neighborhood diners, in his increasingly rote and pathetic attempts to “connect” with “real people.” Obama, we have been told, is frustrated, “restless,” bored with the responsibilities and chores of office. He thinks of himself as the bear — intimidating, wild, untamed, roving — escaping his den. But he is flattering himself. Obama is not the bear. He is the cub: aimless, naïve, self-interested, self-indulgent, irresponsible, irresolute. The bear is in Moscow. One can

At a political event in Wilmington, Delaware, on Thursday, President Obama devoted only 40 seconds to the shooting down of the Malaysian airline, his first statement to the world following the news. His emotionless reference to the attack as ‘a terrible tragedy’ seemed disconnected from the horrific moment, particularly as he immediately reverted to script to praise his administration and criticise Republicans. It was a far cry from President Reagan’s 1983 fierce denunciation of the Soviet shooting down of a Korean airliner as a ‘crime against humanity’. Israeli and Egyptian diplomats both claim Egyptian efforts to mediate a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas collapsed as a direct result of Secretary Kerry’s announcement he was prepared to join the talks. He apparently made the announcement without first consulting either of the parties. The diplomats are convinced that their own

LOS ANGELES — Actor James Garner, whose whimsical style in the 1950s TV Western “Maverick” led to a stellar career in TV and films such as “The Rockford Files” and his Oscar-nominated “Murphy’s Romance,” has died, police said. He was 86. He was found dead of natural causes at his home in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles Saturday evening, Los Angeles police officer Alonzo Iniquez said early Sunday. Police responded to a call around 8 p.m. PDT and confirmed Garner’s identity from family members, Iniquez told The Associated Press. There was no immediate word on a more specific cause of death. Garner had suffered a stroke in May 2008, just weeks after his 80th birthday.

A pernicious, little-known Obama administration policy – one that that incentivizes adult illegal immigrants to use children as human shields to escape arrest and deportation at the border – largely has escaped the media’s notice. This same policy is driving the historic surge of children at the border, as everyone from coyotes to illegal immigrant adults already in America seeks to use children to guarantee their safe passage into the country, or to protect them from deportation if they are illegally living here. The flood of illegal immigrant children, piling up like human debris on the US border, won’t stop
