Bloomberg’s gun group to start 2014 midterms
strategy by surveying candidates

Washington Post, by Philip Rucker

The gun-control group founded by former New York mayor Michael R. Bloomberg (I) will begin surveying all federal candidates in the 2014 midterm elections on gun issues Monday as it tries to become a political counterweight to the National Rifle Association. This is the first big step by Bloomberg — who has committed to spending $50 million of his personal fortune this year to build a national grass-roots movement that will pressure lawmakers to pass more restrictive gun laws — to devise a political strategy heading into the November elections. Bloomberg’s group, Everytown for Gun Safety, is asking all Senate and House

#1, reminds me of the line from Humphrey Bogart in ´Casablanca´ to the Nazi major:

Nazi: "What about when we get to New York?"

Bogart: "Well, Major, there are certain parts of New York I would recommend you don´t try to invade..."

Bloomie: Just can´t let go of trying to tell folks what to do.

Not long ago, I learned the hard way what not to say in prison. One afternoon, a heavily tattooed fellow inmate with the faintest hint of a mohawk and a secret connection to an endless supply of chocolate milk was returning to the barracks from his job milking cows at the prison farm. In a fit of bonhomie and thinking I might score myself a carton or two, I called out to him in greeting. To better insinuate myself, I decided to avoid what some here call “white collar speak” and others call “talking fancy”—i.e., proper, grammatical English—and use a bit

President Barack Obama tried to get himself a bit more political space Thursday to make a decision about whether to expand the U.S military campaign against Islamic militants in Iraq and Syria, but in so doing he may have dealt himself a significant political blow by suggesting that his policy on the issue is adrift. “We don’t have a strategy yet,” Obama said as he took questions from reporters in the White House briefing room. The president’s aim was clearly to defuse building expectations that U.S. military strikes in Syria were imminent as part of a broadening drive to defeat the

Comedian Joan Rivers was admitted to Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City Thursday in critical condition, after reportedly undergoing a minor endoscopic procedure at a medical clinic. The 81-year-old host of E!’s “Fashion Police” was rushed to the hospital after she “stopped breathing,” an unnamed source told E! News. The same source told the network doctors were “putting a scope down her throat to check her vocal chords.” While authorities would not identify Rivers as the patient transferred to Mount Sinai, the New York City Fire Department told FOX411 the person transported was in cardiac arrest. FBI National Domestic Threat

The FBI’s most recent national threat assessment for domestic terrorism makes no reference to Islamist terror threats, despite last year’s Boston Marathon bombing and the 2009 Fort Hood shooting—both carried out by radical Muslim Americans. Instead, the internal FBI intelligence report concluded in its 2013 assessment published this month that the threat to U.S. internal security from extremists is limited to attacks and activities by eight types of domestic extremist movements—none motivated by radical Islam. They include anti-government militia groups and white supremacy extremists, along with “sovereign citizen” nationalists, and anarchists. Other domestic threat groups outlined by the FBI assessment include violent

"Rooting out a cancer like ISIL won’t be easy and it won’t be quick,” President Obama told the American Legion’s annual convention in Charlotte on Tuesday, August 26. He repeated the thought in his pre-Labor Day weekend press conference on August 28. A week before, the day after the murder of James Foley, Obama had remarked, “From governments and peoples across the Middle East there has to be a common effort to extract this cancer, so that it does not spread.” These expressions of alarm at a malignant cancer in the Middle East are an improvement over Obama’s cavalier dismissal,

It also provided another reminder of the deep toll the outbreak has taken on health workers and others in the

RICHMOND, Va. — Lawyers defending Maureen McDonnell at her and her husband’s corruption trial presented a portrait of the former first lady of Virginia that was embarrassing and at times even humiliating. Ms. McDonnell, whose defense began and rested on Wednesday, was described as hiding purchases from her husband, former Gov. Bob McDonnell, when the family was financially stressed early in his career; exploding in anger at her husband while he sought in vain to mollify her; and, ultimately, turning to a wealthy nutritional supplement executive to fill an emotional void in her life. Egypt and the United Arab Emirates carried out airstrikes in Tripoli this weekend against the Islamist militants who were in the process of taking control of that city and its airport. The airstrikes appear to have failed to prevent that takeover. The government of Libya is, in the words of its ambassador to Egypt, “unable to protect its institutions, its airports, and natural resources, especially the oil fields.” Moreover, the U.S., which was unable to protect its personnel in Benghazi and has abandoned its embassy in Tripoli, isn’t about to help. For all the talk about Hillary Clinton hugging it out and Hillary Clinton’s dead-broke comment and Hillary Clinton bringing Bill back to the White House, I’ve long felt that there is a sleeper issue in play for 2016: Will voters want to give Democrats control of the White House for 12 straight years? The country has shown a natural tendency to rotate the presidency between the parties, at least for the last 60 years. And no matter how much Hillary distances herself from President Obama, that will cast a bit of a shadow over her campaign, in my view. I think much of

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.— Former Republican Gov. Charlie Crist continued his political comeback Tuesday as Democratic voters selected him as their nominee to challenge Republican Gov. Rick Scott in Florida, one of four states where voters were choosing candidates for statewide office. Crist easily defeated former state Sen. Both have struggled with sagging approval ratings and run-ins with conservatives. “It’s a wonderful night,” Crist declared after accepting a concession call from Rich. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, part of the Department of Transportation, published last week an "advanced notice of proposed rulemaking" on "vehicle-to-vehicle communications." What NHTSA is proposing could begin a transformation in the American transportation system that makes our lives better and freer — or gives government more power over where we go and when. In announcing its proposed rulemaking, NHTSA is stressing its intention to protect the "privacy" of American drivers. "This document initiates rulemaking that would propose to create a new Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard, FMVSS No. 150, to require vehicle-to-vehicle communication capability for light vehicles,"
