Dolly Parton offers to adopt dog

Daily Express [UK], by Dan Townend

Dolly Parton works from Nine to Five--but she might have to find time to be a pet owner too after she offered to adopt a dog left behind at Glastonbury. The country legend said she would take in the white lurcher if her owner is not found. The canine was discovered in a tent during a clean-up after thousands of festival-goers left the site. She was named Dolly after the star who stole the show at the event eight days ago. The dog was taken in by the Happy Landings shelter, close to the Glastonbury venue at Worthy Farm in

It has emerged that almost a dozen Minnesotans have left the Midwestern state to take up arms for Islamic extremist groups in the country. The revelation follows the news that two Minnesota men were killed fighting for ISIS in Syria this past weekend. [Snip] A Minneapolis father-of-nine, Abdirahmaan Muhumed, 29, has been confirmed as the second American jihadi to die fighting for ISIS in Syria. They are among almost a dozen Minnesotans out of the estimated 100 Americans who have joined the fighting in Syria. Why We Must Demand
More of British Muslims
Breitbart London [UK], by Richard Elliott    Original Article
Posted By: Attercliffe- 8/30/2014 1:49:14 PM     Post Reply
When I say ´demand´ more of British Muslims, I don’t mean ´ask´ more. That isn’t enough. Governments and civil society have been asking for long enough now, yet we still have a frightening lack of cohesion within communities where a large percentage of Muslims live. Nor has it encouraged a tolerant, inclusive attitude amongst huge swathes of Muslims. The soft approach has failed; we have seen a rise in complacency by successive governments who have taken to handling the groundswell of problems involving Muslims in British society with kid gloves. Now it is surely right to be more demanding.

Vladimir Putin´s creeping annexation of

You might not have noticed, but Russia has invaded Ukraine. Back in June, I wrote that Ukraine´s military offensive against pro-Russian rebels in the east had a good chance of succeeding--and, if it did, then Vladimir Putin would have to decide whether to rescue his friends or "sit back and watch them be vanquished". Sure enough, Ukraine´s army has gained ground against the insurgents, pushing them back to their strongholds in the cities of Donetsk and Luhansk. And Putin´s response has become clear: he has indeed intervened to save the rebels. Let's be blunt: to all intents and purposes, Russia has now invaded Ukraine.

Philippine Syria troops ´attacked´

Philippine peacekeepers trapped by rebels in the Syrian Golan Heights are "under attack", Philippine Defence Minister Voltaire Gazmin says. He said the assault had started early on Saturday, but gave no details on any casualties. In recent days the Syrian rebels have taken 44 Fijian peacekeepers hostage in the area and surrounded 75 Filipinos manning two separate UN posts. The rebels have also seized a crossing point into the Israeli-occupied Golan. They are believed to include members of the al-Nusra Front, al-Qaeda´s affiliate in Syria. Mr Guzman told reporters on Saturday that the Philippine soldiers had been attacked at one post, identified as camp 68.

The Department of Homeland Security quickly denied claims on Friday from a watchdog group that the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) has militants stationed in Juarez, Mexico who plan an ´imminent´ attack against the United States. A DHS spokesman was bewildered, telling MailOnline that ´we are aware of absolutely nothing credible to substantiate this claim´ made by Judicial Watch, a center-right group. The organization calling itself the Islamic State has risen from the fog of war in Syria and Iraq in recent months and drawn the attention of the world with major victories on both sides of the Euphrates River that have claimed swaths of territory for its declared caliphate, or Islamic State. Washington rushed to defend President Barack Obama´s comments Thursday night that the US has "no plan" to combat Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) in Syria, clarifying at a press conference that its options are "still under review." The key word missing, apparently, is "yet." “The president hasn´t yet laid out a specific plan for military action in Syria,” said White House press secretary Josh Earnest. “And the reason for that is simply that the Pentagon is still developing that plan and he is still reviewing it.” “The president was candid about the fact that the Pentagon is still reviewing options that

A third of Americans are now on welfare benefits, prompting calls to raise the minimum wage and encourage more people to stay in work. New census data has revealed that around 110 million Americans are receiving government assistance of some kind. The number includes people receiving ´means-tested´ federal benefits and subsidies based on income. Those receiving food stamps, subsidised housing and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families are also included in the total. At the end of 2012 around 83 million were collecting Medicaid and 51.5 million were on food stamps, with some benefitting from multiple programs.

Having read about a “small riot somewhere in rural Minnesota,” Whittaker Chambers recorded in Witness, Robert Minor started shouting about “the beginning of the American revolution.” If the paper wished to capitalize upon dissatisfaction and spin it into insurrection and change, Minor proposed, it would need the staff to keep an eye out for the tell-tale sign and, then, to “play it up big.” Over the past month, the events in Ferguson, Mo., have played

Watching the events unfold in Ferguson, Missouri, I can’t help thinking about the Holocaust and post-war Germany. As the daughter of a Holocaust survivor, I’ve spent years watching Germany wrestle with its dark past. It’s just one of many places that have made efforts to understand and compensate for a difficult history: For nearly three decades, countries as varied as South Africa, Rwanda, and the nations of Latin America and post-Communist Eastern Europe have been engaged in this process, often called “transitional justice.” That’s a broad term for the ways in which societies deal with the legacies of past injustice.

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama is interrupting a weekend trip to return to the White House. White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Obama changed his plans for Friday and will return to Washington late in the evening after fundraisers in New York and Rhode Island, instead of overnighting in New York as originally planned. Earnest said Obama himself made the decision to return to the White House and that it was unrelated to any current events. "He can sleep in his own bed, do a little work tomorrow, spend some time with his family" before traveling back to Westchester
