NAIROBI, Kenya — Eighteen people were killed in overnight attacks by gunmen in two counties on the Kenyan coast, where last month al-Qaida-linked militants claimed responsibility for killing 65 people, the Kenya Red Cross said Sunday. The Sunday attacks took place in the towns of Hindi in Lamu county and Gamba in Tana River, the Kenya Red Cross chief Abbas Gulet said. Al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab militants from Somalia claimed responsibility for the attacks. According to the Lamu county commissioner Njenga Miiri, a group of about 15 gunmen raided the Malamandi village of Hindi and started shooting at residents.

I think the PEACE Corps should pull up its stakes in Africa and come home. I had a classmate, who was on a Big Ten basketball team in college, who joined the PEACE Corps. He was assigned to Kenya and as far as I know is still there. I don´t think the hoodlums of al-Qaida are that interested in learning to play American basketball.

Islam is a cult of death. One indelible memory of a 1977 trip to Kenya was being accosted on a Nairobi street by a proselytizing Muslim, who warned me that if I didn´s convert to Islam, I would be hellbound, My response to him was to turn or burn: that the Judeo-Christian Bible was truth, that the Koran was fiction, and that he himself would suffer a Stygian fate if he didn´t repent and seek the true God (the God of Israel). He smiled mysteriously and disappeared. I guess it wouldn´t be a good idea to try that again in Kenya today. At that time the interfaith War hadn´t officially started.

Rather than argue the point, it´s better now to be armed. (If that´s allowed anywhere overseas.) The best advice is to stay out of any country with a significant Muslim population, and to resist all efforts being made to mainstream it here.

Hong Kong Protests Are Led

Freedom: Hong Kong´s protests for democracy are clearly read as a danger to the communist tyrants in Beijing. They underscore that this is the land that Milton Friedman once used to teach Americans about free markets. How else can you explain 17-year-old Joshua Wong, leader of the biggest challenge ever mounted against the gray men ruling Beijing? The gangly bespectacled leader of the peaceful protest megawave wasn´t even born when the Berlin Wall fell or Tiananmen Square´s democracy protesters were massacred by China´s communists in 1989. Presumably, he would have no knowledge about what

Regulation: It sounds like the punchline to a bad joke: Former Fed chief Ben Bernanke was recently turned down to refinance his mortgage. If the nation´s former top bank regulator can´t qualify, something´s very wrong. ´Just between the two of us," Bernanke told Moody´s economist Mark Zandi at a recent conference, "I recently tried to refinance my mortgage, and I was unsuccessful." Though played for laughs, it was no joke. "I´m not making that up," Bernanke said. "I think it´s entirely possible (lenders) may have gone a little bit too far on mortgage credit conditions." SAN FRANCISCO -- The family of a California teenager who was declared brain-dead after suffering complications from sleep apnea surgery is seeking an unprecedented court order declaring her alive, the family´s lawyer said Thursday. Attorney Chris Dolan said doctors at the non-profit International Brain Research Foundation have found signs of brain functions after running a series of tests on the girl at Rutgers University last week. The discovery came months after three doctors, including one appointed by a judge, declared Jahi McMath, 13, brain dead and Alameda County issued a death certificate after her Dec. 9 surgery went awry.

BEIJING -- Democracy and the rule of law are interdependent, and a democracy without the rule of law will only bring havoc, says a commentary to be carried by Saturday´s People´s Daily. In recent days, protests have been staged in Hong Kong in the name of seeking "real universal suffrage," causing traffic jams, less tourists, the stock market plunging and the suspension of schools and stores. "All these chaotic scenes have caused worries and irritation among Hong Kong citizens," says the commentary on the flagship newspaper of the Communist Party of China Central Committee. According to the article, the so-called "Occupy Central" protests

The head of the Mormon Argentina Buenos Aires West Mission, US citizen David Paul Robertson, was kidnapped, robbed, and finally released by armed men that attacked him while he was driving in Ciudadela, in Greater Buenos Aires. The 52-old religious leader was ambushed as he drove his vehicle near two main avenues by four gunmen who took him hostage in his own car and robbed him. They took his wallet, mobile phone and a notebook and drove him off to another neighborhood, in Buenos Aires City, where Robertson was finally released unharmed.

Politics: President Obama has declared 4,000 illegal immigrant minors "refugees" and given them the right to stay in the U.S. Why just 4,000 and not all of them? Well, it might just be that the lucky 4,000 are tied to people who can vote. As some 66,000 illegal minors, along with 240,000 larger family groups, stream across our border confident the White House won´t send them back, President Obama abruptly announced a de facto amnesty for 4,000 Central American children. He is allowing them to apply for refugee status in their home countries of El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala without the cost

An “extremist” … “a threat” … “an infiltrate.” These are the words Chinese mainland authorities, national security and pro-Beijing newspapers use to describe 17-year-old Joshua Wong. But to those in favor of freedom, Wong is a hero. He’s one of the students leading the demonstrations in Hong Kong where millions are gathered making legitimate demands for democracy. The protests were sparked after Beijing officials rejected a proposal that would allow open nominations for a 2017 leadership election last month. On Sept. 26, Wong and 12 other people were arrested and dragged out of government headquarters. He was bleeding and screaming, and wasn’t

Happy people who buy as necessary. That is Venezuela, according to the last definitions provided by government spokespersons. The assertion implies three things: Venezuelans are happy; Venezuelans buy; Venezuelans buy as necessary. All that is a vision of success, we infer, in socialism. For 16 years, all that Venezuelans have heard is that, whereas, in fact, they face the same mess, aggravated though, that has become Venezuela. The slogan of the government officer who refers to happy Venezuelans buying as necessary also implies that happiness can be reached very easily: going to the supermarket and buying as necessary. It’s the “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.” A New York appeals court next week will consider whether chimps should have the same rights as human beings. The extraordinary proceeding is the result of a lengthy battle by animal-rights activists who argue that animals with human qualities — including chimps — are entitled to human protections, including freedom from captivity. Steven Wise, part of the Nonhuman Rights Project, which is leading the effort, will have to convince a panel of Albany appellate judges that a chimp name Tommy is a “legal person” to get him moved from a cage

For the president’s benefit, let me specify that means a doctor who delivers babies and takes care of the lady parts. When President Obama announced the departure of Eric Holder from his position as attorney general, he also mentioned his “good friend,” the AG’s wife, Dr. Sharon Malone, and he called her an “ohbee-guynee.” (snip) it almost seems as though someone raised in a fantasized USSR training camp for deep cover agents was inserted into the identity of Barack Obama and loosed upon

It is the stuff that nightmares are made of, and day by day it is getting worse. The Ebola epidemic, says Dr Margaret Chan, director-general of the World Health Organisation (WHO), is now “the greatest peacetime challenge” since the Second World War. Yet her own organisation’s tardiness, partly caused by cuts, together with reductions in--and misuse of--funds elsewhere, are largely responsible for Ebola spiralling out of control. At present the numbers of people infected are thought to be doubling in under 30 days--and the blue-chip US Center for Disease Control and Prevention predicts that, if Ebola
