People voluntarily leaving jobs at
highest rate since 2009 downturn

Journal Sentinel [Milwaukee], by John Schmid

Original Article

In the darkest days of the last recession, few among those who had jobs were able, willing or bold enough to quit them. That is changing, however, according to a statistic called the national "quit rate," which some might call the "Take this job and shove it" index. The figure shows that the percentage of Americans who are jumping ship voluntarily is hovering at its highest levels in the four-year recovery. Many see the shift as a sign of optimism for an economy that has sputtered its way through an on-again, off-again rebound from the demoralizing downturn of 2008-´09. "The quit rate is

Broken Link.

There may very well be people that have found better employment. There are graduates each year leaving a burger joint to work at an entry level job in their chosen career. People fed up with certain employer´s rolling back pay and benefits just to see what the market will take. You just never know.

High levels of voluntary quits is typically a sign of strong economic activity. People are quitting to take a better paying job.

"typically" doesn´t fit here, shamus....in my humble opinion. Some sectors are up...oil, health care, and may pay decently, but most don´t pay well.

I suspect the quit came because govt. disability or some such handout makes it easier than beating your head against the wall for peanuts.

One of my friends has a small business. They can´t keep help because- it´s hard work, they never show up after being hired or don´t show up on a regular basis, some have parole officers that show up on day two, some have a ton of paperwork for child support and benefits, garnishments, or they lied about their experience and can´t do the work. By the time they are established on paper, they move on and the cycle starts again.

More pre-election hype about a "recovering" economy.

Wanna know how the economy is doing? Check out the vacancy rate at local strip malls. Or the rental rates per sqft. The rest is BS.

I volunteered for a ´resource action´.

The company was more concerned about Wall Street rather than the corporation, its customers, its products and services, and its employees. Can you say looters?

I saw it starting more than 20 years ago. My employer reduced headcount in the US by over 200K while increasing outsourcing by a similar number.

Yearly resource actions. Sometimes more than one. Under investment in growing products. A sales force that had no technical knowledge. A sever loss of technical skills. Recognition based more on connections rather than contribution. Plant closings.

The writing was on the wall, and I started planning accordingly a long time ago. My employer was not a unique situation.

This has nothing to do with the economy.

I saved my money and finally reached a position where I could ´retire´ from my employer. I will find another employer, but it will be on my terms.

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration pushed back strongly Monday at a torrent of Israeli criticism over Secretary of State John Kerry´s latest bid to secure a cease-fire with Hamas, accusing some in Israel of launching a "misinformation campaign" against the top American diplomat. "It´s simply not the way partners and allies treat each other," State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said. Her comments were echoed by the White House, where National Security Adviser Susan Rice said the U.S. was "dismayed" by mischaracterizations of Kerry´s efforts. Israeli media reports have cast Kerry as seeking a cease-fire that is more favorable to Hamas

President Obama insists on flirting with impeachment even as House Republican leaders insist there’s no such possibility. Obama uses a passive-aggressive strategy that can be judged as a political maneuver, a personality disorder, or both. Secure in the knowledge that impeachment is not the same as removal from office, Mr. Obama brings up the topic on his own and with bold defiance. Martyrdom goes well with a Messiah complex and Mr. Obama’s speeches are a non-stop litany of depicting himself as a victim of Republicans. Already operating beyond the constitutional bounds of presidential power, Mr. Obama’s strategy is to push the bounds

The Baltimore Ravens really are blessed. Let’s say Ray Rice, the team’s Pro Bowl running back, had tested positive for steroids. Under league rules, he would have faced a minimum four-game suspension. A punishment that severe might have gotten in the way of this fine team of men and their playoff drive. Instead Rice drove his hand into his then-fiancée’s head, knocking her cold last February in an elevator at an Atlantic City casino. In the National Football League, domestic battery apparently counts as half-a-roid, good for a two-game suspension. After the N.F.L. handed down its suspension and a fine exceeding $500,000, and

The notorious underwear bomber´s plot in 2009 to blow up a plane on Christmas Day failed because the explosives became ´degraded´ after he wore the same pair of underpants for two weeks, according to a U.S. official. Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was on a suicide mission when he attempted to detonate a bomb in his underpants as the plane, en route from Amsterdam, approached Detroit. The bomb however failed to detonate aboard the flight, which was carrying nearly 300 people, but caused a brief fire that caused burns to his groin.

GAZA CITY — Israel´s Security Cabinet unanimously rejected a cease-fire proposal Friday that called for a week-long truce in the deadly conflict. The proposal by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry called for a temporary pause in fighting to allow Israelis and Palestinians to broker a broader deal. Israeli TV reported the deal was rejected mainly because Israel would have to cut short its effort at destroying Hamas tunnels. Meanwhile, Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon told troops Friday that Israel may significantly widen the Gaza ground operation.

The application window for HHS grants under the Unaccompanied Alien Children program just closed yesterday. According to the data included in the application the average length of stay for a UAC is 30-35 days prior to unification with a sponsor. Most (95%+) of the sponsors are relatives of the child. Most sponsors reunited are the mothers of the children (85%+) who actually brought them along and there is never a disconnect. All sponsors are subsidized by taxpayers at an average cost of around $4,000 to $6,000 per child/per month. A custodial ‘sponsor’ (mother) with three UAC’s will net about $12,000 per

You can understand President Obama´s current political problems -- and how those problems could make things very tough for his party in this fall´s midterm election -- in a single word. And that word is "competence". Obama was elected in 2008 on a stated promise that he would restore competence to government. He pitched himself as the antidote to "Heck of a job, Brownie" and the Bush years, the person who would always put the most qualified candidate in every job in his Administration. That the basic functioning of government would never be in question. Almost six years on from
