Despite recent sightings, shark
attacks uncommon in U.S., California

Los Angeles Times, by James Queally

It´s probably safe to go back in the water. Despite a recent string of shark sightings off Manhattan Beach, including one that ended with a swimmer being hospitalized after he was bitten near the pier Saturday morning, reports of shark attacks are uncommon in the United States, records show. According to data tracked by the Florida Museum of Natural History, there were 39 reported shark attacks in California from 2001 to 2013, or 3.25 per year, and five of them resulted in fatalities. East Coast swimmers are much more likely to wind up the victims of a shark attack, according to the data.

Comments:
Too many people saw "Jaws" and think the movies reflect real life. Yearning for drama - for others, not themselves. (And even "jaws" was set on the East Coast.)

Your chances of being attacked by a shark are passingly remote. Don´t worry about it when you visit the seashore. Just enjoy the water. However, swimming into water more than chest deep, you won´t be able to take evasive action in the one-in-a-million chance that one actually does try to take a sample bite. The odds are with you, though. Worldwide there are about ten fatal shark attacks each year.

I´ve fished off of that pier and caught a Sting Ray there once. I´ve also hooked into sharks from other piers near that area.

With all of those baited lines in the water off of that pier, why wouldn´t sharks investigate the free food.

A local Los Angeles television news program just reported that the shark was 200 ft. or so offshore, got entangled in a fisherman´s line. About the same time a group of long-distance ocean swimmers were swimming by. One of them was bitten in the ribs. He is said to be stable and the injury was not life-threatening.

This report was quite different from the initial report. That often happens.

Kill them all. Let sharks exist in the deep ocean or remote islands with no surfers or swimmers. Or aquariums.

Dan Pfeiffer, a top aide to President Obama, said that the White House is taking the threat of a possible impeachment attempt by Republicans seriously. “I think a lot of people in this town laugh that off,” Pfeiffer told reporters at a Christian Science Monitor breakfast. “I would not discount that possibility. I think Speaker Boehner, by going down the path of this lawsuit, has opened the door to Republicans possibly considering impeachment at some in the future.” Pfeiffer´s comments come days after the House took steps to move forward with Speaker John Boehner´s lawsuit against the President for his use of

BAGHDAD -- Iraqi lawmakers elected a veteran Kurdish politician as the nation´s new president on Thursday, hours after an attack on a prison convoy killed dozens of people, brutally underscoring the challenges faced by the country´s leaders as they struggle to form a new government. The 76-year-old Fouad Massoum, one of the founders of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan party led by Iraq´s previous President Jalal Talabani, accepted the mostly ceremonial position after winning two-thirds of the votes in parliament, noting the "huge security, political and economic tasks" facing the next government. Taken in the abstract the illegal alien influx appears singular. However, if you allow yourself to elevate above the current crisis you find a parallel issue which aligns with the Obama goals for illegal alien absorption. You just have to get high enough and look beyond the current crisis horizon to see where they connect. A French Ministry of Defense official tells Fox News that the Air Algerie jet carrying 116 people that vanished from radar shortly after takeoff late Wednesday night has crashed in Mali, and that two French fighter jets have located the wreckage. Air navigation services lost track of the Swiftair MD-83 roughly 50 minutes after takeoff from Ougadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, at 9:55 p.m. ET Wednesday, the official Algerian news agency said. That means that Flight 5017 had been missing for hours before the news was made public. The wreckage was found near the Malian city of Gao, the official told

JERUSALEM — Hamas militants intensified their attacks on Israeli forces Saturday, killing two soldiers on Israeli soil and attacking others with antitank missiles, machine guns, even an explosives-laden donkey, apparently undaunted by Israel’s incursion into the Gaza Strip. As the conflict stretched into its 12th day, the militants’ resilience seemed to upend the narrative provided by Israel of a Hamas severely weakened by the Israeli ground offensive, airstrikes, artillery barrages and the ongoing destruction of its tunnel network. In their most audacious attack Saturday, Hamas fighters dressed in Israeli army uniforms slipped from central Gaza into Israel through a tunnel and attacked

President Obama insists on flirting with impeachment even as House Republican leaders insist there’s no such possibility. Obama uses a passive-aggressive strategy that can be judged as a political maneuver, a personality disorder, or both. Secure in the knowledge that impeachment is not the same as removal from office, Mr. Obama brings up the topic on his own and with bold defiance. Martyrdom goes well with a Messiah complex and Mr. Obama’s speeches are a non-stop litany of depicting himself as a victim of Republicans. Already operating beyond the constitutional bounds of presidential power, Mr. Obama’s strategy is to push the bounds

The president’s demeanor is worrying a lot of people. From the immigration crisis on the Mexican border to the Islamic State rising in Mesopotamia, Barack Obama seems totally detached from the world’s convulsions. When he does interrupt his endless rounds of golf, fundraising and photo ops, it’s for some affectless, mechanical, almost forced public statement. Regarding Ukraine, his detachment — the rote, impassive voice — borders on dissociation. His U.N. ambassador, Samantha Power, delivers an impassioned denunciation of Russia. Obama cautions that we not “get out ahead of the facts,” as if the facts of this case — Vladimir Putin’s

A year after news of the Monica Lewinsky scandal broke, former First Lady Hillary Clinton allegedly told a Pulitzer-prize winning journalist that it was former President Bill Clinton’s abusive mother that caused his unfaithfulness and sex addiction, a new book claims. That journalist was Lucinda Franks and while her latest book, “Timeless: Love, Morgenthau, and Me,” doesn’t have much to do about the Clintons, the part that does offers never before reported information from a 1999 interview with the former First Lady. The New York Daily News obtained parts of the book a month before its scheduled August 2014 release.
