Despite recent sightings, shark
attacks uncommon in U.S., California

Los Angeles Times, by James Queally

Original Article

Posted By:SoCalGal, 7/5/2014 5:33:19 PM

It´s probably safe to go back in the water. Despite a recent string of shark sightings off Manhattan Beach, including one that ended with a swimmer being hospitalized after he was bitten near the pier Saturday morning, reports of shark attacks are uncommon in the United States, records show. According to data tracked by the Florida Museum of Natural History, there were 39 reported shark attacks in California from 2001 to 2013, or 3.25 per year, and five of them resulted in fatalities. East Coast swimmers are much more likely to wind up the victims of a shark attack, according to the data.

Comments:
Too many people saw "Jaws" and think the movies reflect real life. Yearning for drama - for others, not themselves. (And even "jaws" was set on the East Coast.)

Your chances of being attacked by a shark are passingly remote. Don´t worry about it when you visit the seashore. Just enjoy the water. However, swimming into water more than chest deep, you won´t be able to take evasive action in the one-in-a-million chance that one actually does try to take a sample bite. The odds are with you, though. Worldwide there are about ten fatal shark attacks each year.

I´ve fished off of that pier and caught a Sting Ray there once. I´ve also hooked into sharks from other piers near that area.

With all of those baited lines in the water off of that pier, why wouldn´t sharks investigate the free food.

A local Los Angeles television news program just reported that the shark was 200 ft. or so offshore, got entangled in a fisherman´s line. About the same time a group of long-distance ocean swimmers were swimming by. One of them was bitten in the ribs. He is said to be stable and the injury was not life-threatening.

This report was quite different from the initial report. That often happens.

Kill them all. Let sharks exist in the deep ocean or remote islands with no surfers or swimmers. Or aquariums.

Explosions were heard in Ukraine’s port city of Mariupol as the government and pro-Russian separatists tried to hold onto a truce accord intended to stem months of bloodshed. No casualties have been reported in the past 24 hours, military spokesman Andriy Lysenko said in televised remarks in the capital Kiev yesterday, the first time that’s happened since the insurgents unleashed a counteroffensive last month. Presidents Petro Poroshenko and Vladimir Putin spoke by phone on the progress of the truce, agreeing that the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe should monitor the accord, according to the Ukrainian leader’s website.

Although few medical experts realize it, part of the population in West Africa is immune to the Ebola virus, according to virologists who specialize in the disease. Assuming they are correct, and if those people can be identified, they could be a great help in fighting the outbreak. Immune persons could safely tend the sick and bury the dead just as smallpox survivors did in the centuries before smallpox vaccine. Also, antibodies could be harvested from their blood to treat new Ebola victims. But many factors remain unclear, including which Africans have antibodies and how much antibody is needed to be protective. The

The experiment was conducted on mice via cocaine injections. The results were published in the journal Biomedical Optics Express. The method means that we can finally see tiny vessels called capillaries, which form the brain’s circulation network. The Obama administration will make a decision on executive action to prevent corporations from leaving the country in the "very near future," Treasury Secretary Jack Lew said Monday morning. Speaking at an event on business taxes at the Urban Institute in Washington, Lew placed the responsibility on Congress to address so-called tax inversions, but said that the administration was prepared to step in if lawmakers don´t move quickly enough. Inversions are tax maneuvers in which corporations buy firms in low-tax countries in order to place their headquarters in that country. Such deals have grown in number in recent months, with
