What’s a caliphate? News puts
focus on ancient form of government

McClatchy Newspapers, by Lindsay Wise

Original Article

WASHINGTON — When the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria announced Sunday that it was changing its name and reviving the caliphate, the news lit up the Internet and headlined news reports around the world. But what is a caliphate? And what is the self-described Islamic State hoping to achieve with its declaration? The answers, experts say, have more to do with the Sunni militant group’s rivalry with al Qaida than with any plan to replicate the last caliphate, which was abolished in 1924 after the fall of the Ottoman Empire. Understanding the history of the caliphate and its powerful symbolism is key

"...Experts say...".
Minimizing the caliphate as some archaic entity and giving it meaning only in a context of Shiite/Sunni rivalry is more than ignorance. Its a lie.
The restoration of the caliphate is part of the Korans directive of one religion, one the planet. All will be subject to Sharia Law and either muslim or slave.
This nonsense is like saying that the SS/SA internal fight within the Nazi party wouldn´t affect the world. Its what comes next that is the problem once the internal bugs are worked out.

Now provide a map that shows the extent of Islamism (literally all around the world) and the number of people who subscribe to the law laid down by the Koran (billions) and add a little of the history of Islamic aggression and conquests and spice it up with the current conflicts (the majority of the fighting currently occurring all around the world) and you might begin to get a sense of the threat Islam poses to the non-Islamic world. It isn´t just an itty bitty brown stain somewhere in Iraq.

If they want to call their dirtbag empire a Caliphate, so what? It´s not secure. A Sunni on Sunni civil war will only benefit the Shias who want to kill them all anyway. They won´t control the oil market, and the only refinery in their area won´t produce anything but corrosive diesel oil, and they lack the expertise to get it to produce anything else. The killing will go on, and their gains are as ephemeral as the shifting sands of Araby. Let them continue to kill each other. That, as Martha Stewart would say, "is a good thing."

Addressing the cool kids at Rolling Stone during his ill-fated presidential campaign, John Kerry attempted to explain his vote for the Iraq War. “I mean, when I voted for the war, I voted for what I thought was best for the country,” Kerry said. Then after taking a swipe at a Democratic presidential candidate who disrupted his coronation by actually opposing the war, he added, “Did I expect George Bush to f–k it up as badly as he did? I don’t think anybody did.” Fast forward more than a decade. John Kerry is now secretary of state. And things are certainly f–ked

More than half of the latest batch of air-traffic controller job offers nationwide went to people with no aviation experience as part of a program designed to expand hiring among the general public, the Federal Aviation Administration said Wednesday. About 22,500 people without an aviation background initially applied. Of those, 837 were offered jobs. The remainder of the roughly 1,600 new controller slots went to more traditional applicants, including military veterans with aviation experience and accredited aviation school graduates. The hiring breakdown marks a major shift in FAA recruitment strategy, which is now geared toward trying to keep ahead of

Today is not a good day to be Vladimir Putin. A game that the Russian president was winning so deftly in the spring has turned on him in summer: The Ukrainian military is bearing down on the pro-Russian separatists in east Ukraine, and there’s word that it’s on the verge of splitting the rebel-held territory in two and that two major rebel leaders have fled. Putin´s supporting these guys because of a position he staked out months ago, even though they’ve just gotten him into a whole lot of trouble by mistakenly shooting down a plane full of Dutch people.

Family members of the four Americans who died in the 2012 Benghazi attack told Fox News Wednesday that after meeting with members of the House committee probing the attack, they have never been more confident that investigators will get to the truth. They also said there was a surprising amount of common ground between Republicans and Democrats on the highly charged Benghazi Select Committee chaired by Rep. Trey Gowdy,R-S.C. Members of the Select Committee met for the first time this week with the family members, wrapping up Wednesday with a session with the ranking Democratic member, Rep. Elijah Cummings of Maryland. JERUSALEM -- Israel said Thursday it has called up another 16,000 reservists, allowing it to potentially widen its Gaza offensive against the territory´s Hamas rulers in a war that has killed more than 1,300 Palestinians and more than 50 Israelis. The new call-up follows another day of intensive fighting, in which tank shells struck a U.N. school where Palestinians were sheltering and air strikes tore through a crowded Gaza shopping area. At least 116 Palestinians and three Israeli soldiers were killed Wednesday alone. The move also coincides with stalled diplomatic efforts to end the war, which has claimed more than 1,360 Palestinian

The impeachment rage is easy to quench by a constitutional reminder: a simple majority vote by the Republican-controlled House could easily pass

A U.S. District judge ordered a U.S. Marshal to seize the cargo — about 1 million barrels of crude oil, worth about $100 million — aboard the tanker United Kalavryta in response to a complaint filed by the Iraqi government claiming the oil was smuggled out of Kurdistan without its permission. The German official charged with delivering this cargo arrived here aboard a nearly empty military plane and was whisked away to a secret meeting with the president of Mali, who had offered Europe a face-saving solution to a vexing problem. Officially, Germany had budgeted the money as humanitarian aid for the poor, landlocked nation of Mali. In truth, all sides understood that the cash was bound for an obscure group of Islamic extremists who were holding 32 European hostages, according to six senior diplomats directly involved in the exchange.
