U.S. Military Turns to

Soldier of the Future

Wall Street Journal, by Don Nissenbaum

San Fernando, Calif.—The Oscar-nominated designers at Legacy Effects have outfitted such memorable movie warriors as The Terminator, RoboCop, Captain America and Iron Man. The special-effects company is now at work on what seems a mission impossible: Building an Iron Man-style suit to protect and propel elite U.S. troops by encasing them in body armor equipped with an agile exoskeleton to enable troops to carry hundreds of pounds of gear. The 3-D printers that once churned out parts for actor Robert Downey Jr.´s red and gold movie armor are making pieces for a Pentagon prototype. Military officials recently examined three designs,

This first contracts for exoskeleton development we´re let in the late 90s, and this is what it has come to? Hollywood, really? Sounds like the program went into the crapper along the way because of no funding, so zippy is pulling a form over substance PR campaign while giving tax dollars to his buddies in La-La Land.

Democrats Urge Michelle

As the midterm campaigns heat up, Democratic candidates are turning to the White House for help and an injection of star power. But it is the first lady, not President Barack Obama, ?who in some places is emerging as the more sought-after campaigner. Some Democrats contend that Mr. Obama´s sagging popularity limits where he would be helpful this election cycle. Bringing higher approval ratings and a less-partisan pitch, Michelle Obama already has hit the trail, appearing earlier this month in Georgia with Senate candidate Michelle Nunn. Next month, the first lady´s campaign travel will include a visit to Iowa, where

Environment: The joke in Washington is that climate change alarmists in the White House care more about ice than ISIS. But it´s no joke. We’re being had. Again. For six years, President Obama has endeavored to will the country into accepting two pillars of his alternative national-security reality. First, he claims to have dealt decisively with the terrorist threat, rendering it a disparate series of ragtag jayvees. Second, he asserts that the threat is unrelated to Islam, which is innately peaceful, moderate, and opposed to the wanton “violent extremists” who purport to act in its name. Now, the president has been compelled to act against a jihad that has neither ended nor been “decimated.” The jihad, in fact, has inevitably intensified under his counterfactual

When the U.S. military strikes, its leaders often choose colorful code names for the operation that sometimes stick in history, like Operation Overlord or Rolling Thunder or Desert Storm. Not this time. The U.S.-led air campaign against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria doesn´t have a name. "I know of no plans at this point to name it," Pentagon spokesman Rear Adm. Political pollsters have a tough job. They have to create formulas to determine if the person they are interviewing is likely to vote, and it is within this calculation that their reputations are made. Typically, those who are likely to vote in an off-year election are pretty set. They are the people who always vote in elections — with some motivated by specific issues. In a wave election, the number of those motivated by specific issues escalates, changing the electoral landscape as the candidates who are beneficiaries of this increased participation sweep to victory. The 2014 election is rapidly looking like something new
