The Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC,) which advocates for digital privacy, has filed a formal complaint with the Federal Trade Commission over the 2012 Facebook mood manipulation study. EPIC claims Facebook violated laws when it conducted this experiment, as users did not know they were being studied, and did not give their consent. The formal complaint states, "At the time of the experiment, Facebook did not state in the Data Use Policy that user data would be used for research purposes. Facebook also failed to inform users that their personal information would be shared with researchers." While Facebook has not issued an

Facebook is a dumb place to do a broad based study on or about, when they´re mostly a bunch of unemployed, drunk ,stoned derelicts.Going to the beer place is the high light of the day after checking to see if Obama has any new freebies on the way.

Jihadists Rout Kurds in North

BAGHDAD — The crisis gripping Iraq escalated rapidly on Thursday with a re-energized Islamic State in Iraq and Syria storming new towns in the north and seizing a strategic dam as Iraq’s most formidable military force, the Kurdish pesh merga, was routed in the face of the onslaught. The loss of the Mosul Dam, the largest in Iraq, to the insurgents was the most dramatic consequence of a militant offensive in the north, which has sent tens of thousands of refugees, many from the Yazidi minority, fleeing into a vast mountainous landscape. In one captured town, Sinjar, ISIS executed dozens of Yazidi

In July, the United States and the European Union finally bridged their differences and slammed Russia with severe sanctions in the wake of the shootdown of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17. The pincers and scalpels of the previous rounds were discarded; this time, it was whole industries—defense, finance, and energy—that were targeted, including Sberbank, Russia’s largest commercial bank. If the first round of U.S. sanctions was met with ridicule among the Kremlin elite—Vladimir Putin’s gray cardinal Vladislav Surkov, sanctioned back in March, joked that what he likes in the United States is Tupac Shakur, dead since 1996—there’s not much bluster this

New data from the Federal Reserve highlight how many Americans continue to struggle financially more than five years after the end of the Great Recession. As of September 2013, when the central bank conducted the poll, a quarter of families said they were "just getting by," while an additional 13 percent were struggling to make ends meet. Asked to compare their current financial situation with how they were faring five years ago, as the housing crash was wreaking havoc on the economy, 34 percent of respondents said they were doing "somewhat or much worse" than in 2008. Global health experts Friday declared the Ebola epidemic ravaging West Africa an international health emergency that requires a coordinated global approach. Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone are battling the Ebola virus, which has killed 932 people in those countries. The epidemic has also spread to Nigeria. "The possible consequences of further international spread are particularly serious in view of the virulence of the virus, the intensive community and health facility transmission patterns, and the weak health systems in the currently affected and most at-risk countries," the World health Organization said Friday, after two days of emergency meetings. A Nevada rancher warned local law enforcement officials on Wednesday to uphold their oaths of office or face the consequences of a people forced to “defend [their] God-given rights," an ominous message that comes just months after the same rancher led an armed protest against federal agents. “While the [Bureau of Land Management] was willing to shoot my family over land and power, we were willing to die for our families, our livelihoods and our constitutional rights. You should have been defending these rights for us,” rancher Cliven Bundy´s son, Ammon, said in a statement addressed to Clark County Sheriff Doug

Arun Singhal has claimed to be a victim of the "Sandwich Mafia." Singhal is a former owner of a Subway franchise in Australia, and as he tells the story, he was punished by his corporate bosses after taking issue with the "six grams of fat or less" claim Subway puts on their menus and in advertising. Singhal, who had invested $350,000 into the Subway location, claims that a Subway leasing manager approached him about exchanging his space for a "new busier location." Instead, Singhal closed his old shop, but was left with nothing but a $350,000 loss and a lot of

Russian strategic nuclear bombers conducted at least 16 incursions into northwestern U.S. air defense identification zones over the past 10 days, an unusually sharp increase in aerial penetrations, according to U.S. defense officials. The numerous flight encounters by Tu-95 Russian Bear H bombers prompted the scrambling of U.S. jet fighters on several occasions, and come amid heightened U.S.-Russia tensions over Ukraine. Also, during one bomber incursion near Alaska, a Russian intelligence-gathering jet was detected along with the bombers. “Over the past week, NORAD has visually identified Russian aircraft operating in and around the U.S. air defense identification zones,” said Maj. Whenever elections approach, there is always a flurry of concern among Democrats regarding the white working class. Despite a steady and gradual decline in its size over the last several decades, this group remains a substantial percentage of the electorate; even relatively small decreases in its support for Democrats can mean defeat to Republican opponents. On a national level, if white working class support falls even 1 or 2 percent below the 36 percent that Obama received from them in 2012, the party´s 2016 nominee will be in serious trouble. In this year’s election cycle, the discussion about white working

Since it is 100 years ago this week that Britain entered the first world war – and at the moment the world seems to be especially ridden with conflict – it’s an opportune moment to reflect on why human beings seem to be unable to stop fighting wars. In most cases wars are initiated by governments, not by populations. And, most of the time, they are the result of disputes over resources and land, or of a government’s desire to increase its influence and power. However, looking back over the history of warfare, what is most striking is how willing most

President Obama gave a press conference this evening. He started a little over an hour late without explanation. Reporters stuck to asking questions that they evidently knew Obama would be comfortable answering. None of them asked him about any of his administration scandals. ABC’s Jon Karl, usually a tough questioner of Obama and his spokesmen, asked a rambling question that played right into the Democrats’ “economic patriotism” canard. Despite the fact that the president showed a passionless, bloodless, disinterested face to the world, he still managed to do some damage. Chris Jansing of CNN asked Obama if the sanctions against Russia are working.

And the men can’t complain because you’re outnumbered today,” she said as the audience laughed. Obama cited Laura Bush as a First Lady that acted with a level of

The poll found that only 36 percent of Americans surveyed approve of President Obama’s foreign policy. The former Ambassador warned that if America cowers from a position of power, “you are going to have

A likeness of Obama with a party hat on his head then appeared, although the mouth area was made to look like that of a monkey - and a banana repeatedly moved into the mouth. The series of projections are then repeated several times. A group calling itself The Moscow Student Initiative

The GOP has shown time and again that it is incapable of passing any meaningful immigration reform. But give them tens of thousands of Central American children fleeing violence, and they fly into action. Turns out, what animates today´s Republicans is deporting kids. So inspired were they, the GOP-controlled House of Representatives stayed late Friday to distort and demagogue a humanitarian crisis, passing a reprehensible bill that the Republicans claim addresses the border crisis. Dozens of government watchdogs are sounding the alarm that the Obama administration is stonewalling them, in what is being described as an unprecedented challenge to the agencies they´re supposed to oversee. Forty-seven of the government´s 73 independent watchdogs known as inspectors general voiced their complaints in a letter to congressional leaders this week. They accused several major agencies -- the Justice Department, the Peace Corps and the chemical safety board -- of imposing "serious limitations on access to records." Concern about rising wealth and income inequality has generated all kinds of solutions, often focused on improving the lot of the people at the bottom with measures such as minimum wages. But instead of putting a floor on what people get, why not put a ceiling on how much they get to keep?(Snip)Suppose that people, after paying ordinary income taxes, would be allowed to keep up to, say, $500,000 of their income, then would be obliged to give away the rest to the charities of their choice or, if they like, to a charity of their own design and creation.
