Activist to distribute flashlights

Arizona Daily Star (Tucson AZ), by Perla Trevizo

Immigrant-rights activists have set up water stations, gone out nearly daily to find border crossers in distress, and circulated warning posters and maps of the locations of those who have died in the desert. (Snip) Now Robin Hoover, founder and former member of the local group Humane Borders, is planning to distribute 100 high-intensity flashlights. Hoover will work today with a local church in Altar, Sonora, 115 miles southwest of Tucson and one of the last staging areas for would-be border crossers, to pass out the $8.32 flashlights that can illuminate a tree a half-mile away and include both a strobe

Why don´t the helpful activists take the immigrants into their homes and save the U.S. taxpayers some money? These clueless do-gooders have no idea what they are doing to this country. Only obama does.

Whiskey is back! Bourbon production

Kentucky bourbon makers are making a big bet by stashing away their largest stockpiles in more than a generation. To put it in bartenders´ lingo: Distillers are putting up the tab for millions of rounds of bourbon years before they are even ordered. The production poses an inherent risk, but hitting the moment right - a big supply meshing with big demand - could mean a serious payday for companies big and small. Missing the target would leave bourbon makers awash with supply and leave future production in question, particularly for craft distilleries

Dr. Ben Carson vs. Rev. Al Sharpton? Carson on Monday challenged Sharpton to a public debate on how violence across America can be tapered down, using the unrest in Ferguson, Mo., as a launching point. “I had an opportunity to speak with Reverend Sharpton a couple months ago at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner,” Carson said on Fox News, “and said, ‘we want the same kinds of things but we have very different approaches to achieving them. What do you think about a public debate to talk about the various ways that we can get this done?’” Carson said Sharpton

The use of tear gas by Missouri law enforcement has caused a run on gas masks in the St. Louis area. Local residents, reporters, and video production crews are making last minute calls to places like Uncle Sam’s military surplus only to find out that gas masks, gas mask filters, and bullet proof vests are all sold out. “My mother feels like a virtual prisoner in her home,” said one Ferguson resident who attempted to buy a gas mask. Other equipment being bought up are ear plugs to block out the loud blast from the LRAD sound cannon as well as

Previously unnoticed audio from a video recorded in the chaotic moments after Michael Brown´s fatal shooting last Saturday in Ferguson, Missouri, could help back up Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson´s version of events. Overheard while one man films the gruesome aftermath of Brown´s daylight shooting, the barely discernible audio is of one unseen man recounting the alleged version of events that he saw to another man, off camera, while bystanders scream and shout at police to assist the stricken 18-year-old. At around the six minute and 30 second mark in the 10 minute long video, one man is just heard over

WASHINGTON— Unemployment rates rose in 30 U.S. states last month, even as employers in two-thirds of the states stepped up hiring. The trends reflect an increase in job-hunters nationwide as an improving economy has encouraged more people to seek work. The Labor Department said Monday that unemployment rates fell in eight states in July and were unchanged in 12. At the same time, hiring rose in 36 states, fell in 13, and was unchanged in Iowa. The national unemployment rate ticked up to 6.2 percent in July from 6.1 percent in June, the government said earlier this month, even as

But the rioting only paused; it didn’t cease. They say a prosecutor could get a grand jury to indict a ham sandwich, and this always seemed like hyperbole, until Friday night a Texas grand jury announced an indictment of governor Rick Perry. The “crime” for which Perry faces a sentence of 5 to 99 years in prison is vetoing funding for a state agency. The conventions of reporting — which treat the fact of an indictment as the primary news, and its merit as a secondary analytic question — make it difficult for people reading the news to grasp just how farfetched this indictment is. The Obama administration has done little to calm racial tensions as they spread from Manhattan to St. Louis to Los Angeles. Quite the opposite, some top officials have fueled African-American fears of racism with false accusations of anti-black discrimination. Attorney General Eric Holder’s race-baiting is no secret. Justice Department documents show the nation’s top cop gave thousands of dollars to help the Rev. Al Sharpton organize marches protesting the death of Trayvon Martin. Now he’s sent the civil-rights unit to St. Louis to do the same thing in the fatal shooting of Michael Brown. Less known, however, is the role of Labor Secretary Thomas
