John Williams to conduct a new
version of The Star Spangled
Banner for 4th July

American composer-conductor John Williams, 82, is set to debut a new arrangement of The Star-Spangled Banner for Independence Day. It will feature choirs, trumpets, an orchestra and cannons on the National Mall in Washington D.C. for the nation´s birthday. Usually a soloist performs the national anthem for the annual ´Capitol Fourth´ celebration in Washington. But this year, the acclaimed composer will lead the National Symphony Orchestra, the U.S. Army Herald Trumpets, the Joint Armed Forces Chorus and the Choral Arts Society of Washington in performing a special new arrangement. This year marks the 200th anniversary of the national anthem.

Hopefully it will be done with Williams´ sense of drama. I´ll be disappointed if some chanteuse squalls her lungs out at the high part near the end of the anthem.

By all means #3! His rendition when I served overseas was truly inspired. Also Ray Charles´ rendition of "America" has never failed to move me. But... thank God the Star Spangled Banner is still being played at this occasionn instead of Hail to the Chief.

That description reads like Tchaikovsky´s1812 Overture. Which is a little puzzling since the 1812 is normally played in July 4th concerts anyway.

Wow. Our Army has Herald Trumpets?

Despite my own sniping I´ll reserve judgement. until I hear it. I prefer simplicity to pomp.

I´m sorry. I can´t listen to "The Star-Spangled Banner" anymore - any version of it. This country died awhile ago and to me, all these fireworks and this "pretend patriotism," including the SSB, are like people celebrating over rotting corpse in the road. Could the medical examiner´s office just come by and pick it up? The nearest of kin have already been notified. I´m a senior citizen and I remember the real United States of America...

If CBS thought that Sharyl Attkisson was a thorn in their side when she worked there, they should have known that things would only get worse when she was out on the loose. Her recent report for Sinclair TV was picked up on ABC’s Project Immigration series, and she’s highlighting some important questions which are not being answered.- Since the border crisis began, three military facilities housing more than 7,700 unaccompanied, illegal immigrant children have been close. Forget designer gowns, fancy ice sculptures or artisanally crafted favors — the biggest status symbol in all of wedding-dom has to be having the commander-in-chief as a guest at one’s nuptials. President Obama and his family aren’t exactly regulars on the rice-and-cake circuit — and in case you hadn’t heard, there are a few pressing issues around the globe that also might be taking up their time — so the family’s attendance at the New York wedding of chef Sam Kass and MSNBC host Alex Wagner on Saturday night is a capital-B Big Deal. FERGUSON, Mo. — Activists on Saturday called for mass civil disobedience on the highways in and around this St. Louis suburb to protest the killing of an unarmed black teenager by a white police officer, with the leaders of one coalition encouraging supporters to stop their cars to tie up traffic on Labor Day. The announcement came at a peaceful if at times tense march and rally on Saturday that drew more than 1,000 demonstrators to some of the same Ferguson streets where the police clashed with protesters in the days after the killing of Michael Brown. To live in Tehran, writes British-Iranian journalist Ramita Navai in this collection of true stories, requires one essential skill: lying. “Morals don’t come into it,” Navai writes. “Lying in Tehran is about survival . . . when the truth is shared in Tehran, it is an act of extreme trust or absolute desperation.” “City of Lies” features eight sprawling tales (all names have been changed, as have certain details, and several characters are composites). Each focuses on an individual, but Navai uses these personal stories to observe how people live, love and survive in a society ruled by fundamentalists. Iranian youth

A Friday afternoon dispatch at the Politico from Carrie Budoff Brown and Jennifer Epstein tells us that "The White House is putting the finishing touches on a post-Labor Day schedule that will send the president to states where he’s still popular." The list of states where the Politico pair alleges that´s the case is quite short: "Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Illinois and California." That´s it. Obama, in a situation resembling that of Richard Nixon in the final months of his presidency, when "Tricky Dick" was mocked for being able to find friendly audiences in just a few Southern states, is apparently

The childhood home of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis is for sale in Manhattan at $44 million. The recently renovated 1929 duplex retains its traditional architecture but has been updated with modern finishes and a contemporary look. The 17-story Art Deco building was designed by architects Arthur Loomis Harmon and Rosario Candela, who made a name for himself designing apartments in New York City in the 1920s. Candela’s name is often associated with luxury buildings and coveted addresses. Onassis’ grandfather, James T. Lee, was the builder. Even the most ardent immigrant rights advocates are saying it: Reform legislation is dead this year — and for the foreseeable future. With that in mind, all eyes have shifted to the White House, where President Obama is weighing unilateral changes to his immigration policies in the face of congressional inaction. In March, the president asked the Department of Homeland Security to review its approach to deportations in search of blanket ways to conduct them "more humanely." With the results of that review – and Obama´s subsequent policy response – expected next month, both sides of the immigration debate are

Watching the events unfold in Ferguson, Missouri, I can’t help thinking about the Holocaust and post-war Germany. As the daughter of a Holocaust survivor, I’ve spent years watching Germany wrestle with its dark past. It’s just one of many places that have made efforts to understand and compensate for a difficult history: For nearly three decades, countries as varied as South Africa, Rwanda, and the nations of Latin America and post-Communist Eastern Europe have been engaged in this process, often called “transitional justice.” That’s a broad term for the ways in which societies deal with the legacies of past injustice.

It will take two decades to rebuild the thousands of houses destroyed during Israel’s assault on Gaza, according to a recent NGO report. At least 17,000 homes were obliterated or severely damaged during the conflict, with thousands more needing substantial repairs, according to an assessment by Shelter Cluster. More than 2,100 Palestinians, most of them civilians, were killed during the conflict. In addition 71 Israelis were killed – all but six of them soldiers. But the report on Gaza’s housing stock indicates inhabitants of the densely populated strip will face a severe infrastructural burden over the coming years.
