Purlin In Anger: Arrest Breaks

National Public Radio, by Bill Chappell

A "knit-in" was broken up in South Burlington on Wednesday, after five women who are unhappy with a Vermont Gas pipeline plan occupied the utility´s waiting room — and occupied themselves by knitting. One woman was bound off by police, taken away in what says were five squad cars that responded to perhaps the most civil of all disobediences. The knitters insisted on speaking to Vermont Gas officials about their complaints over a pipeline expansion. They were told they needed an appointment; after the utility´s headquarters closed, they were warned that they were trespassing. Jane Palmer, a diminutive woman in a

When traveling a few years ago, I was surprised to find knitting needles are okie-doke on airplanes. TSA is worried about nail clippers, etc., but allow a ten-inch long sharpened piece of metal??? completely flummoxed here in Alaska.

A new religious group aims to bring the devil to Detroit. The Satanic Temple today marks the launch of its first chapter outside New York. But leaders say they don’t worship Satan. They don’t practice cannibalism, or sacrifice people or animals. “It’s peaceful,” said Jex Blackmore, 32, local leader and part of the temple’s executive ministry. “The idea of sacrifice specifically is to appease some demon or some god, and that’s a supernatural belief that we don’t subscribe to.” The group’s tenets include free will, compassion toward all creatures, respect of others’ freedom — including freedom to offend — and

Democratic Senate investigators criticized a watchdog for the U.S. Internal Revenue Service on Friday for “inaccurately and unfairly” damaging public confidence in the tax agency’s political impartiality. Republican investigators disagreed, defending the job done by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) last year in reviewing the IRS’ handling of tax-exemption applications received from political groups. A starkly split, 222-page report from the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations displayed continued partisan discord over an affair that burst into view in May 2013 and quickly enmeshed the IRS in its worst scandal in decades. Dead bodies are strewn all over the streets in Bama, Borno State in Nigeria. The Islamist terror group Boko Haram attacked the city for two straight days, attempting to establish their rule there and expand within the state. Residents and Borno Senator Ahmed Zanna allege the terrorists control the second-largest city in the state, but Borno State government officials have not confirmed the claim. “So many bodies litter the streets, and people are not allowed to even go and bury the dead ones,” said Zanna. “So the situation is getting worse and worse. The problem has to do with how people are connected with insurance providers, how they learn about subsidies, and how they sign up for plans. As Congress originally conceived it, the A.C.A. called for each state to set up its own exchange with a Web site, which most of
