College Presidents Say No
To Unions For Athletes

Associated Press, by TOM RAUM

WASHINGTON -- Northwestern University on Thursday urged the National Labor Relations Board to overturn a regional ruling that would allow its scholarship football players to unionize, holding up the football program as exemplifying the university´s integration of athletics and education. In a 60-page brief filed with the labor board in Washington just hours ahead of a midnight deadline, the university laid out its opposition to student athletes forming a union and asked to argue its case before the board. The regional director´s decision "transforms what has always been a cooperative educational relationship between university and student into an adversarial employer-employee relationship,"

Comments:
This is the problem with identity politics. Eventually different "victim groups" collide over lucre. Here the victim athletes (the BMOC, with scholarships and special housing, dining halls, easy courses) and the victim University (beacon of liberal enlightenment in a dark ocean of brutish right-wing taxpayers) are pitted against each other. Makes the leftists in charge of the Univeristy look bad, and if successfull, will reduce the fungible millions these athletes bring into the University coffers. The Horror!

The rich tapestry of leftist conflict and irony is in full display here. You have the NLRB, Liberal Universities, and college athletes (richly represented by minorities) pitted against each other of the "redistribution" of millions of dollars sports related income. The only guaranteed winner in this is the lawyers representing the two sides. If the "student athletes" win, expect a mind-blowing payout to the lawyers who are likely working for a contingency fee.

They don´t need a union to do this. They can just all band together and strike... if that´s really how they feel.

That´s what I thought. It´s not about the players now is it?

There is no NLFB. The SC overturned the illegal appointments and all their decisions are null and void.

The Secret Service is investigating a possible threat made against President Obama. Authorities tell NBC News that there was a “potentially suspicious person and vehicle” near where Obama made fundraising stops tonight. Connecticut police have been informed of the report by the Secret Service, as well as being advised to be on lookout for this suspicious person. State law enforcement is currently looking for the car this person was driving, which they believe to be a blue Jetta with Connecticut plates. Obama attended one fundraiser in Connecticut tonight before heading to another one in Rhode Island

During the Great Depression, the Communist scribes at the Daily Worker were forever assuring the more skeptical among their colleagues that the heroic spark was near. Having read about a “small riot somewhere in rural Minnesota,” Whittaker Chambers recorded in Witness, Robert Minor started shouting about “the beginning of the American revolution.” If the paper wished to capitalize upon dissatisfaction and spin it into insurrection and change, Minor proposed, it would need the staff to keep an eye out for the tell-tale sign and, then, to “play it up big.” Over the past month, the events in Ferguson, Mo., have played

The federal government is still seeking answers as to why the majority of lesbians are obese and U.S. taxpayers are footing the bill, which now totals $2.87 million. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) study is now in its fourth year, receiving an additional $670,567 for fiscal year 2014. The project seeks to determine why “nearly three-quarters of adult lesbians overweight or obese,” and why gay males are not. In just two years the project’s budget has nearly doubled, growing from $1.5 million to nearly $3 million today, despite fears that sequestration could jeopardize the project and other NIH funding. The study, which

It´s not been a great summer for President Barack Obama. Disgraced for hitting the golf course amid crucial ISIS talks, struggling with record-low approval ratings; and now, lambasted for wearing a silly suit. But let´s put things into perspective. It´s not Obama´s first dodgy outfit choice, nor the worst in the history of the White House. So in honor of our leader´s Yes We Tan debacle, Femail has rounded up the top 20 worst presidential crimes against fashion of all time. Scroll down for video

I guess he really was multitasking out on the golf course. The President’s team has been hard at work behind the scenes, coming up with a strategy … well, maybe we should say plan, to address the nation’s many challenges. Spurred by President Obama’s climate action plan, the Department of Energy is pumping out new standards for refrigerators, dishwashers, air conditioners, ceiling fans, furnaces, boilers, water heaters, lamps and many more appliances. The administration says the standards will not only help the planet but also stimulate the economy by saving consumers money on their energy bills that they can spend elsewhere. After what

Watching the events unfold in Ferguson, Missouri, I can’t help thinking about the Holocaust and post-war Germany. As the daughter of a Holocaust survivor, I’ve spent years watching Germany wrestle with its dark past. It’s just one of many places that have made efforts to understand and compensate for a difficult history: For nearly three decades, countries as varied as South Africa, Rwanda, and the nations of Latin America and post-Communist Eastern Europe have been engaged in this process, often called “transitional justice.” That’s a broad term for the ways in which societies deal with the legacies of past injustice.

ISIS is a cancer that must be stamped out, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry wrote Saturday in an opinion piece for The New York Times. Kerry called the Islamist extremist group, known for beheadings, crucifixions and terror campaigns against religious and ethnic minorities, a "unifying threat to a broad array of countries" that needs to be confronted. His article appears in the aftermath of the political uproar that engulfed the White House this week after President Barack Obama said "we don´t have a strategy" on ISIS in Syria. It will take two decades to rebuild the thousands of houses destroyed during Israel’s assault on Gaza, according to a recent NGO report. At least 17,000 homes were obliterated or severely damaged during the conflict, with thousands more needing substantial repairs, according to an assessment by Shelter Cluster. More than 2,100 Palestinians, most of them civilians, were killed during the conflict. In addition 71 Israelis were killed – all but six of them soldiers. But the report on Gaza’s housing stock indicates inhabitants of the densely populated strip will face a severe infrastructural burden over the coming years.

Short of world war, it’s rare that a chief executive goes through a foreign policy month like President Obama’s August. U.S. warplanes struck in Iraq for the first time in years, as U.S. diplomats struggled to establish a new government in Baghdad. Islamic State militants beheaded an American journalist in Syria and spread their reach across the Middle East. War raged between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. In Afghanistan, U.S. plans for an orderly exit at the end of the year teetered on the brink of disaster. Russia all but invaded Ukraine and dared Obama to stop it. Libya descended

At a fundraiser in the home of an occasional Obama golf partner and former president of UBS Investment Bank, Obama spoke before an audience paying $15,000 a couple to bask in his aura.Let me tell you about the very rich. They are different from you and me. They want to hear more Obama, and they can afford his policies. Speaking before a friendly crowd, Obama delivered real value. He achieved new depths of inanity. He actually said this without provoking howls of laughter. (The very rich are different from you and me). Justin Sink reports in the Hill:

The St. Louis Rams released defensive end Michael Sam on Saturday, the team announced. Sam´s efforts to become the first openly gay player in NFL history came up just short in a competition against undrafted rookie Ethan Westbrooks. Sam had a team-high six tackles in the Rams´ final preseason game but didn´t make the 53-man roster. Westbrooks is one of nine defensive linemen to land a roster spot. Sam officially hit waivers Saturday at 4 p.m. ET when all NFL teams had to trim their rosters down to the league-mandated 53 players. From there, the other 31 teams will have
