College Presidents Say No
To Unions For Athletes

WASHINGTON -- Northwestern University on Thursday urged the National Labor Relations Board to overturn a regional ruling that would allow its scholarship football players to unionize, holding up the football program as exemplifying the university´s integration of athletics and education. In a 60-page brief filed with the labor board in Washington just hours ahead of a midnight deadline, the university laid out its opposition to student athletes forming a union and asked to argue its case before the board. The regional director´s decision "transforms what has always been a cooperative educational relationship between university and student into an adversarial employer-employee relationship,"

Comments:
This is the problem with identity politics. Eventually different "victim groups" collide over lucre. Here the victim athletes (the BMOC, with scholarships and special housing, dining halls, easy courses) and the victim University (beacon of liberal enlightenment in a dark ocean of brutish right-wing taxpayers) are pitted against each other. Makes the leftists in charge of the Univeristy look bad, and if successfull, will reduce the fungible millions these athletes bring into the University coffers. The Horror!

The rich tapestry of leftist conflict and irony is in full display here. You have the NLRB, Liberal Universities, and college athletes (richly represented by minorities) pitted against each other of the "redistribution" of millions of dollars sports related income. The only guaranteed winner in this is the lawyers representing the two sides. If the "student athletes" win, expect a mind-blowing payout to the lawyers who are likely working for a contingency fee.

They don´t need a union to do this. They can just all band together and strike... if that´s really how they feel.

That´s what I thought. It´s not about the players now is it?

There is no NLFB. The SC overturned the illegal appointments and all their decisions are null and void.

Chelsea Clinton, who grew up in a White House dogged by scandal but one that also protected her from the media´s spotlight, credits her dad´s "words and even more his actions" for teaching her right and wrong. In a touching Father’s Day message that is part of a worldwide campaign to put the focus on men who’ve nurtured their daughters, Chelsea Clinton said he helped guide her effort to make an impact on the world. “It is impossible for me to describe the extent to which my father has supported me, nurtured me and empowered me over the years,” she said on

Sulaiman Abu Ghaith, the most senior adviser to Osama bin Laden to be tried in a civilian United States court since the Sept. 11 attacks, was convicted on Wednesday of conspiring to kill Americans and providing material support to terrorists. Mr. Abu Ghaith, a 48-year-old Kuwaiti-born cleric known for his fiery oratory, had recorded impassioned speeches for Bin Laden after Sept. 11, in which he praised the attacks and promised that future attacks would be carried out.

The White House on Tuesday formally requested $3.7 billion in emergency funding from Congress to deal with an influx of Central American minors along the southern border. But the proposal was quickly met with broad skepticism among Republican lawmakers, who were doubtful that the package would be approved quickly — if at all. Administration officials said the request is part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at building more detention centers, adding immigration judges, and beefing up border patrols and air surveillance. President Obama has said he hopes such steps will both speed deportations and discourage adults from sending children on

Despite fiery statements issued by Hamas spokesmen over the past 48 hours, it was obvious Tuesday night that the Islamist movement was searching for ways to rid itself of the current escalation. Hamas feels that it has been forced into a confrontation with Israel – one that it did not want at this stage because of its increased isolation and financial crisis. The massive Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip over the past 24 hours have surprised Hamas and other Palestinian groups. Hamas apparently expected a limited response to the recent rocket attacks on Israeli cities and towns. But as the

Sarah Palin on Tuesday joined a growing chorus of Republicans calling for the impeachment of President Obama, writing in a Breitbart op-ed that the influx of young illegal immigrants over the southern border "is the last straw that makes the battered wife say, ´no mas.´ " Mixed/careless metaphors aside, this is nothing but bad news for Republicans — especially four months until the 2014 election. Palin is hardly the first GOP politician to raise the issue of impeachment over the past couple years. Others include Sens. James Inhofe (R-Okla.), Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) and Tim Scott (R-S.C.), Reps. Blake Farenthold (R-Tex.),

Starting next week, House Republicans will launch a highly visible—and likely tumultuous—three-week process of bringing to the floor legislation to authorize their promised lawsuit against President Obama over his use of executive actions. "In theory, you could report out a resolution tomorrow and vote on it," said a House GOP aide on Tuesday. "But that is not the approach [the leaders] want to take." Rather, the aim is to display—if not actually engage in—a more deliberative process, even if amid controversy. This drawn-out script builds toward a potentially dramatic floor vote held just days, or even hours, before the House adjourns on

WASHINGTON — Congressional Democrats said Tuesday that they had developed legislation to override the Supreme Court decision on contraceptives. The bill would ensure that women have access to coverage for birth control even if they work for businesses that have religious objections. The bill, developed in consultation with the Obama administration, would require for-profit corporations like Hobby Lobby Stores to provide and pay for contraceptive coverage, along with other preventive services, under the Affordable Care Act. The measure could be on the Senate floor as early as next week, Senate Democrats said. “Your health care decisions are not your boss’s

Fate hasn´t been kind to Hillary Clinton, at least not in its most recent phase. In 2008, when the plate was set for the national Democrats, she lost the nomination to Barack Obama, of scant years and no gravitas, who soared out of nowhere to wrench destiny from her on the unspecified promise of "change." Now, "change" has come, and people don´t like it. Iraq changed from a safe, stable ally (just ask Obama) to a terrorist haven, one of the reasons why, though no fellow Democrats seem likely to edge her, her chances of winning the White House seem dim. A poll conducted by the Wall Street Journal, NBC News, and Annenberg finally gave a numerical answer to a question we at Mediaite often ask ourselves: Out of all political figures that should pipe down just a bit, which one should do it immediately? Answer: Sarah Palin. Overwhelmingly Sarah Palin, says America. 52% of surveyed American adults want Sarah Palin to “be quiet,” according to the poll taken between June 30 and July 7 (Snip) 45% of respondents added that they wanted Jesse Jackson to be quiet, too; followed by Dick Cheney (42%), Newt Gingrich (39%), Al Gore (37%), and

So just who is in charge in Barack Obama´s White House? ABC´s Jonathan Karl on Tuesday asked White House press secretary why the letter from the White House to Gov. Rick Perry (R-TX) inviting him to a meeting with President Obama regarding the Texas border crisis was from Valerie Jarrett. While it´s routine for staff to draft such letters for elected officials, matters of such magnitude and to other elected officials of stature are almost always in the name of the principle. The president´s spokesman, when asked why the letter was from Jarrett rather than the President, said "Valerie spends a

Despite Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson vowing to "stem the tide" of unaccompanied illegal minors across the southern border with Mexico, thousands more are expected to enter the United States by the end of the year. With the system being overwhelmed, Border Patrol agents are concerned about minors who have admitted to being MS-13 members, a brutal street gang from El Salvador that has been successful in infiltrating American communities. Agents are also concerned about minors who have committed acts like torture and murder in their home countries before heading north to the United States. "We have six minors in Nogales

President Barack Obama does not believe his temporary amnesty program for illegal immigrant children has exacerbated the border crisis even though the number of illegal immigrant kids crossing the border spiked the year after he unilaterally enacted the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program in 2012. In fact, Obama thinks programs like DACA and a comprehensive amnesty bill are ways to solve the border crisis. Addressing the press Wednesday after meeting with Texas Governor Rick Perry to discuss the border crisis in Dallas, Obama, when asked if programs like DACA have caused or contributed to the crisis,

Screenwriter James Vanderbilt will make his directorial debut with the film, which will also star Cate Blanchett. Robert Redford has signed on to play Dan Rather in Truth, a film based on the 2005 memoir Truth and Duty: The Press, the President, and the Privilege of Power. The book, written by Rather´s producer Mary Mapes, centers on the firestorm that erupted in September of 2004 after Rather reported that George W. Bush had received special treatment while serving in the Air National Guard during the Vietnam War, a report that was based on documents that turned out to be forgeries.

Kirsten Powers snapped at Bill O’Reilly tonight after he told her she doesn’t know what she’s talking about on immigration, and told O’Reilly she’s tired of him mocking liberals every day on every single issue just because “they care about people.” Powers argued that O’Reilly’s getting his facts wrong and that immigrants coming to the U.S. back in the day (like the Irish) were poor and uneducated, much like the immigrants O’Reilly is so worried about today. O’Reilly dismissed Powers and told her, “You don’t seem to really know what you’re talking about.” That really set Powers off. “I am
