Plastic Bag Fantasy Island Vanishes
Like Atlantis, Scientist Corrects
Million-Ton Floating Estimate

PJ Media, by Scott Ott

Original Article

Posted By:KarenJ1, 7/4/2014 12:41:10 PM

The scientist whose findings environmentalists used to shame us into bringing our own reusable bags to the grocery store now says that his estimate of one million tons of plastic floating in the ocean may have been off by a factor of perhaps 143. His latest estimate ranges from 7,000 to 35,000 tons, and even most of that has biodegraded into granules. Cózar’s team didn’t find country-size islands of plastic bags strangling baby birds and sea turtles. It found “micro plastics.” What people think of as a dump doesn’t look like floating junk. Instead, ocean current “convergence zones” are swirling

Comments:
What a shock, the eco-terrorists were wrong again. s/o It is funny to read that birds recycled plastic bags as nesting material that: "no doubt reduced moisture incursion and boosted the R-value of their insulation..." I have a Morning Dove that builds her nest every year above a brick pillar on my front porch. I´ve never seen her use plastic bags but I do have to regularly sweep twigs off the porch!

But at the other end of his current estimate, he may have only been off by a factor of 28. Regardless, this is not science at work, but environmental kook alarmism.

I almost always use the plastic grocery store bags; they are more sanitary than the reusable cloth ones (which have been found to accumulate germs if you don´t wash them), and I can "recycle" them for use in the small garbage cans around the house. I do have several of the non-cloth bags from the store I frequent, but I mainly use them in the car to keep the plastic bags with the groceries contained; otherwise they can get heavy if you put too much in them.

The environuts who claim that 10s of thousands of sea animals are dying by eating ocean trash have "no empirical evidence" of their new, much lower number. Does the trash island scientist have any empirical evidence of his new numbers or are they made up like the global warming computer fantasy models?

These idiots think science ends with their speculations about the world. Any dope can (and does) make up opinions about things. Science is doing all the hard and sometimes VERY long work of proving it. Or disproving it. Most speculations are wrong to some degree.

Birds are much smarter than we give them credit for. Our town went plastic shopping bag-less about two years ago, community being full of enviro extremeists welcomed it. I invested in a box of 1,000 plastic shopping size bags via the internet at a very small cost, and keep one in each of my re-usables to contain meat, fish or any other sloppy/smelly item. The check out clerks are happy to oblige. It does help minimize the contamination risk.

Somewhere there is a bacteria that is learning slowly but surely to eat plastic bags - plastic bottles and styrofoam. There is quite of bit of energy stored in those molecular bonds, and where there is energy an organism will develop to utilize it.

I´ve seen too many fabric bags being brought into grocery stores and they have ´´curous´´ stains on them that have dried there for a long time...like bllod staians from meat pacj=kages! They are nasty! Most grocers have very nice bags that are reusable for many other things, other than reuse them fro groceries. About the only grocery store that carried horrible grocery bags is KROGER. You can´t reuse them and usually your stuff is double bagged because it don´t last for the trip home from the grocer without getting holes in them. But grocery bags I reuse fro many things but NOT to the grocery store!!!! YUK!!!!

Plastics are made from hydrocarbon petrochemicals. As demonstrated in the Valdez and BP oil spills, the sea tends to break down hydrocarbons over time. That is: the planet has its own "recycling" process.

That said: common sense should prevail in our handling of such waste. There is a "middle ground" here.

While more famous for his anti-war activities as a founder of the Weather Underground in the 1960s and ‘70s, he is now a committed educator. Retired from his education professorship at the University of Illinois in Chicago, Ayers continues to give lectures to teachers in training, speak at education conferences and agitate against America’s two-tiered educational system – one for rich, one for poor – on behalf of low-income parents, students and instructors. In early June 1964, a group of Republican governors sought to wrestle control of their party from Barry Goldwater, the Arizona conservative who was about to lead the GOP to one of the most crushing defeats in its history. The governors saw a disaster in the making, and sought a moderate candidate who could capture the imaginations of grassroots Republicans—but also beat President Lyndon Johnson in the general election.
