´Heart of a lion´: Quadruple
amputee Afghanistan vet prepares
for arm transplant

Fox News, by Jennifer Griffin

Marine Sgt. John Peck is one of very few quadruple amputees to survive the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Now he is preparing for his next mission: an experimental double-arm transplant that will give him, in part, his freedom back. "No more prosthetics," Peck told Fox News. "I´m going to get cadaver arms from a donor, and they´re going to do a 16-hour surgery with 12-16 doctors and reattach bone, using titanium plates, reattaching nerves, blood vessels, tendons, and muscles." He is not the first quadruple amputee to undergo such a surgery, which remains experimental. Brendan Marrocco, a soldier injured

As I wipe the tears from my face, I commend this young man for his unbelievable strength and courage. I will keep this to remind me that when I start whining about something inconsequential that things sure could be a whole lot worse.

The best wish that I have for this brave Marine and his wife to be is that he is soon able to say, "Ouch, I just burnt my fingers on that frying pan. Nothing serious, and I promise to wear those oven mitts tomorrow."

May Sgt. Peck´s procedure exceed the wildest hopes of his Boston surgical team. And may he soon bear hug his family and salute his surgeons for a job well done. And may this incredibly complicated procedure become relatively routine over time.

US officials: US launches second

NEW DELHI – American officials say the U.S. launched a second round of airstrikes against Islamic State targets near Irbil on Friday, using drones and fighter jets. The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they weren´t authorized to discuss the strikes by name, say unmanned aircraft struck a mortar near Irbil and four Navy F/A-18 fighter jets struck a seven-vehicle convoy outside Irbil. The jets flew off the USS George HW Bush aircraft carrier. The Friday afternoon strikes followed a morning strike on an Islamic State artillery gun that was firing on Kurdish troops near U.S. personnel. President Barack Obama said

On August 6, Cliff May of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies charged that while the media have filled their stories on the current conflict in Gaza with “pictures of neighborhoods reduced to rubble, with Palestinian men, women and children in desperate circumstances,” they have been negligent in telling their audiences that Hamas has been “deploying civilians as human shields, storing missiles in mosques and UN schools, setting up command posts in hospitals, using ambulances to ferry terrorists to battle, and children to dig tunnels.” One reason for this bias, according to May is Hamas’ intimidation of journalists. May relayed that

It’s all for the art, man. José Rodolfo Loaiza Ontiveros, the artist behind the exhibition called ‘Profanity Pop’ has taken his “art” to an irreligious level, depicting Mickey Mouse as Christ, Daisy duck as the Virgin Mary holding pregnancy test, and a priest giving communion to Jessica Rabbit. Predictably, Ontiveros is a hit with liberals. Ontiveros described his collection as a “celebration of creative freedom in our time." Attacking the Catholic Church in pop-culture is so creative and original. Nobody’s ever donethat before. A majority of Americans believe President Obama´s ongoing struggle with Congress is more about partisan politics than it is about principle, according to Rasmussen Reports. And the president isn’t the only one who catches blame for Washington’s infamously hated gridlock: Voters say Republicans in Congress are just as much a part of the problem. The survey, which was conducted from July 31 to Aug. 1 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points, found that 69 percent of respondents believe the political gridlock is all about scoring partisan points, while a measly 20 percent believes

The Drudge headline says, "Obama Bombs Iraq." The Washington Examiner headline says, "U.S. military aircraft conducts first airstrike in Iraq." The Washington Post headline says, "U.S. launches airstrikes against Islamic State in Iraq." All are entirely accurate, but what is perhaps most notable about President Obama´s rationale for action, laid out in a brief address to the nation Thursday night, is how precisely limited the president´s directive is. Some Republicans are calling for Obama to take broad and decisive action in Iraq. This is most definitely not it. In the president´s first sentence Wednesday night, he stressed that he was authorizing

An elementary school in the outer suburbs of Atlanta has outlawed birthday cupcakes, cookies and, in fact, all food from birthday parties over fears that some kids with food allergies could feel sad and left out. Officials at Brooks Elementary School in Newnan, Ga. announced the draconian new policy for the upcoming school year via a letter to parents, reports The Newnan Times-Herald. “When parents have brought in goodies for birthdays, oftentimes these children are not included in the snack because of dietary restrictions and have felt left out,” Julie Raschen, principal of Brooks Elementary, said, according to the Times-Herald.

With midterm elections around the corner, and the 2016 presidential campaign season starting to kick into gear, Republican politicians are once again looking for a way to woo Latino voters to the ballot box in their favor. And one way they hope to draw in their votes is by looking south. Some GOP leaders in Washington have hindered the party´s relationship with the Hispanic bloc by comparing the current situation with the influx of Central American migrants as an “invasion” and passing legislation to accelerate the deportation of the unaccompanied children. Others, however, realizing the Latino vote cost them the White

It may well be that ISIS is one of at least two too-clever-by-half operations masterminded by our enemies. At the beginning, ISIS spun off from Al Qaeda because, we were told, Zawahari was too moderate for them. AQ didn’t slaughter enough, didn’t crucify enough, wasn’t psychotic enough for their taste. It seems that Iran gave ISIS support, in keeping with its well-documented practice of supporting all sides in other countries’ internal conflicts, the better to a) figure out what’s going on, b) penetrate organizations that might win, and seem actually or potentially dangerous to Tehran, and c) spread riot and ruin,

President Obama gave a press conference this evening. He started a little over an hour late without explanation. Reporters stuck to asking questions that they evidently knew Obama would be comfortable answering. None of them asked him about any of his administration scandals. ABC’s Jon Karl, usually a tough questioner of Obama and his spokesmen, asked a rambling question that played right into the Democrats’ “economic patriotism” canard. Despite the fact that the president showed a passionless, bloodless, disinterested face to the world, he still managed to do some damage. Chris Jansing of CNN asked Obama if the sanctions against Russia are working.

The GOP has shown time and again that it is incapable of passing any meaningful immigration reform. But give them tens of thousands of Central American children fleeing violence, and they fly into action. Turns out, what animates today´s Republicans is deporting kids. President Obama said Thursday night that he has authorized two new, major actions by the U.S. military in Iraq: airstrikes against militants with the Islamic State if U.S. interests or personnel are threatened, and humanitarian assistance for thousands of civilians who have fled the Islamist advance in northwest Iraq and are now trapped on a mountain. Even those two specific missions are more complicated than that, however. First, the U.S. humanitarian mission on Mount Sinjar began Thursday with airdrops by military aircraft, but it could require targeted airstrikes in order to “break the siege” at the base of the mountain and
