The Day Lou Gehrig Delivered
Baseball’s Gettysburg Address

Daily Beast, by Ray Robinson

Original Article

Posted By:StormCnter, 7/4/2014 10:48:29 AM

Two years before his death, an ailing Lou Gehrig stood in a packed Yankee Stadium and proclaimed himself ‘the luckiest man on the face of the earth.’ Ray Robinson was born in 1920 and during his childhood lived on the corner of 115th Street and Broadway across the street from Columbia University. When he was 3 or 4 years old, his father took him to watch the Columbia baseball team play, specifically to watch a young man named Lou Gehrig. Robinson was too young to remember anything specific about “Columbia Lou,” but he still recalls the idea of Gehrig, that he

Lou Gehrig´s immense talent was only exceeded by his class and dignity.

Where are men like that today? Now we have Stinky 0bama and Master B. Clinton - - a perfect metaphor for the decline and destruction of our once-great country.

As a brother Phi Delta Theta, Lou Gehrig has always been a man to look up to and emulate. Each year the fraternity honors a major league player with the Lou Gehrig award for exhibiting the character, sportsmanship, and work ethic of Gehrig. Rest in peace old brother. Your legacy lives on.

Meriam Ibrahim, the Sudanese Christian woman who faced a death sentence for refusing to renounce her faith, has been flown to Italy on an Italian government jet, accompanied by that country´s vice-minister for foreign affairs. Reuters reported that Italian television broadcast images of Ibrahim, 27, arriving at Rome´s Ciampino airport accompanied by her family and Italian politician Lapo Pistelli. Earlier, Pistelli had posted a picture on his Facebook page depicting himself with Ibrahim and her two children. Texas Governor Rick Perry went on Hannity tonight to discuss the illegal immigrant crisis at the US southern border. Perry shared these shocking numbers on the current crisis. “Sean, there have been over the course of the last five years, since the fall of ’08, over 203,000 individuals who have come into Texas illegally who have been booked into our county jails. Those individuals have accounted for over 3,000 homicides and over 8,000 sexual assaults. We can’t afford to wait for Washington to secure this border. We’ve had enough.”

Despite multiple studies showing no link between vaccines and autism, RFK Jr. continues to use his position to spread that lie. What will it take to make him stop? If you’re headed to Capitol Hill with a cause, it helps to be a Kennedy. For Robert Kennedy Jr., scion of America’s most storied political family, all it takes is his name to arrange face-to-face meetings with two powerful Senators. As a physician who has traveled to Washington, D.C., with health-care advocacy groups on a number of occasions, I envy the access he displays in a recent profile in The Washington

Since the beginning of Obamacare enrollment, critics have expressed concerns that some of the nearly 50,000 navigators, who are supposed to provide a nonpartisan service by helping people sign up for health coverage, would actually use their position to advance political agendas or to organize voters. As John Fund wrote last year, many of the organizations that received navigator grants have close ties to the Democratic party. Recently, the Connecticut health exchange decertified one of its Obamacare navigators on the grounds that she had done just that. She had been repeatedly warned about “using [her] position . . . to promote

Soon enough, Brazil will be able to boast the largest aquarium in South America. When it is completed in 2015, Acquario Ceará, a new public aquarium planned for the northeastern Brazilian city of Fortaleza, will easily be the world´s most recognizable aquarium—an architectural statement piece if there ever was one. It may also be the most truly American project in the Western Hemisphere. While the backers of Acquario Ceará are aiming to create a new design symbol for South America, it will be almost entirely a product of North America. The U.S. is designing, engineering, constructing, and even financing Acquario Ceará—a

The face now of the pro-Russian separtists in Eastern Ukraine is 43-year-old Igor Strelkov. The Russian media fell in love with Strelkov this April, when his armed group took control of the town of Slavyansk, escalating the conflict from a war of nerves into an actual full-fledged war. And Strelkov has become a fixture in the Western media too ever since pro-Russian separatists shot down Malaysian Flight 17. Western journalists and commentators, from the New York Times to the State Department, glean facts from Strelkov’s page on the Russian social-media network “VKontakte.” That’s where the message about the downed Ukrainian

Many of the Democrats who tell the world from the bumpers of their hybrids that they’re “Ready for Hillary 2016,” regard Hillary Clinton as something of a rock star. She does, too. The former secretary of state expects to get $275,000 for a speech to a school, a charity or even a capitalist enterprise with more money than it needs. Her fee sometimes exceeds that of the likes of Paris Hilton, the heiress who’s famous for being famous and who got a cool quarter of a million not long ago for thrilling the guests with her presence at an A-list

From Christian colleges challenging ObamaCare´s contraception mandate to the Catholic bishops protesting gay marriage, Christians are among the most unyielding opponents of sexual liberation. Progressives working towards greater public acceptance and support of LGBT rights would no doubt like to see Christians with traditionalist views abandon their old-fashioned doctrines on these matters. Or just go away. Neither will happen. These Christians are bound to their idea of human sexuality because it is fundamentally inseparable from their understanding of God. Put another way: if they´re wrong about sex and gender, then they´re wrong at a very basic level about God, the bible, and

The Obama administration announced Tuesday in a court filing that it would change the way it imposes its contraception and abortifacient mandate on religious non-profits, such as Christian schools like Wheaton College and charities like the Little Sisters of the Poor. The administration claims it has already accommodated these non-profits, but religious leaders and scholars have argued the "accommodation" is nothing more than an accounting gimmick that still requires conscientious objectors to violate their religious and moral beliefs. The Supreme Court´s Hobby Lobby decision did not resolve whether or not the so-called accommodation was legal, and most observers expect that question to

Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy wasn’t out to make news when he addressed the annual conference of the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and devoted most of his 50-minute speech to the Magna Carta, which turns 800 years old in 2015. But Kennedy did let on that he doesn’t belong to the school of Constitution-worshipers who base their legal doctrines on what they glean to be the original, literal meaning of every word and phrase in the nation’s founding document.

Mr. Obama told supporters that he doesn’t watch the news because, “Whatever they’re reporting about, usually I know.” That contrasts with the explanations that the president and his aides have given from scandals in the past few years ranging from long wait times and deaths at the VA, to the IRS targeting tea party groups, to the

In a potentially crippling blow to Obamacare, a federal appeals court panel declared Tuesday that government subsidies worth billions of dollars that helped 4.7 million people buy insurance on HealthCare.gov are illegal. The 2-1 ruling said such subsidies can be granted only to people who bought insurance in an Obamacare exchange run by an individual state or the District of Columbia—not on the federally run exchange HealthCare.gov. "Section 36B plainly makes subsidies available in the Exchanges established by states," wrote Senior Circuit Judge Raymond Randolph in his majority opinion, where he was joined by Judge Thomas Griffith. The NAACP Legal Defense Fund has filed a class action lawsuit against the city of Detroit for water shutoffs that members claim are racially motivated. The Detroit Water and Sewerage Department stopped service to about 7,200 buildings with overdue bills in June, compared to 1,570 in the same month last year. The issue gained national attention last month after activists appealed to the United Nations for help. The shutoffs are “being done in a discriminatory fashion,” the NAACP’s Veronica Joice told a local CBS affiliate. “They should at least take a look at whether there’s a better way to do this that doesn’t affect the most vulnerable citizens

WASHINGTON —Polarization and partisanship are a plague on American politics. Political scientists have found that the two parties have each grown more ideologically homogeneous since the 1970s. The Senate hasn’t been so polarized since Reconstruction; the House has not been so divided since around 1900. As measured by laws passed, the current Congress is on track to be among the least productive in our republic’s history. How did this happen? One of the main causes has not gotten enough attention: the party primary system. The reasons behind the shocking primary defeat last month of Representative Eric Cantor of Virginia, who
