Japanese Politician Issues Sobbing,
Fist-Pounding Public Apology

A local Japanese legislator has become an Internet darling after an overwrought, sob-filled apology to his constituents over potential corruption was posted online. Forty-year-old Prefectural Assemblyman Ryutaro Nonomura, who represents the southwestern prefect of Hyogo, was accused of spending more time in Japanese famed hot springs than serving his constituents. According to Kobe Shimbun, a Japanese newspaper, Nonomura escaped to the hot springs 106 times during 2013. His trips were paid for by public funds, but not illegal; the Sydney Morning Herald notes that Nonomura spent three million yen on visits to a preferred resort in the hot springs in

I see no reason why he would not be a strong candidate for President of the US on the Democrat ticket.

As one of Barack Obama’s chief political strategists, David Plouffe mixed grassroots organizing and Internet campaigning to help win two presidential elections. Now Uber, the controversial onlinetransportation company, has tapped Plouffe to deploy these same skills in what has rapidly become one of the most prominent political fights to emerge out of Silicon Valley. Uber announced Tuesday that Plouffe will join the company as a senior vice president of policy and strategy as it spars all over the world with powerful taxi interests — and their political allies — who argue that Uber puts the public at risk and operates

Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R), under indictment on two felony counts, was booked by authorities Tuesday afternoon, where he declared his innocence and vowed to fight the charges he faces. “I’m going to enter this courthouse with my head held high,” Perry told a crush of reporters and some cheering supporters before he entered a Travis County courthouse. Perry, who wore a dark suit and blue tie, had his fingerprints and a mug shot taken. The governor smiled slightly in his booking picture, which he took without his glasses on. Authorities did not issue an arrest warrant.

The Islamic State’s official media just released a graphic video showing the beheading of American journalist James Foley, who was taken in northwest Syria on Thanksgiving Day 2012. The ISIS terrorist in the video says that the beheading is revenge for President Obama’s recent airstrikes on ISIS targets in Iraq. The video, viewed in full by PJM, begins with a snippet of Obama speaking about the strikes, then shifts to images of the strikes with a title that reads, “American Aggression Against the Islamic State.” The title card then says a “A Message to America.” Foley, with a shaved head, was

Tired of her kids ignoring her phone calls, this Texas mom taught herself how to develop an app and created “Ignore No More.” “We need to develop an app that just shuts their phone completely down and they can’t even use it,” Sharon Standifird, a mother of two, told ABC 13. “I got on the Internet and I literally just started researching how to develop an app.” Once parents install the app, they will be able to take control of their children’s smartphones when they believe their phone calls or messages are being ignored. THERE ARE MANY fair grounds on which to criticize Rick Perry’s performance as governor of Texas: his rejection of federal funding for Medicaid expansion and his grandstanding deployment of the state’s National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, to name just two. But the list does not include the charges newly levied against him by an Austin grand jury. It’s true that the case revolves around bare-knuckled tactics by Mr. Perry (R). Last year, he threatened to veto $7.5 million in funding for the prosecutorial unit in Austin that investigates public corruption, unless that unit’s boss, an elected Democratic district

Thoughts on the Ritual Now Taking

Eight days ago, a Ferguson, Missouri police officer named Darren Wilson shot and killed Michael Brown, a young but very large (6´ 4?, 300 pounds) African-American, under circumstances that remain murky. Since then, a ritual with which we have become tiresomely familiar has unfolded: demonstrations that turned into riots, Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson–still!–descending on the scene, pleas for peace, intervention of federal authorities, calls for reappraisal of American race relations. Followed by more riots and looting. We have been here before, too many times. But why? What is so special, so symbolic, about the death of Michael Brown? In

On Thursday, President Obama interrupted his vacation to address reporters regarding the situation in Northern Iraq and the situation in Ferguson, Missouri. As to the latter, Obama said, in essence, that the liberals had taken charge. Governor Jay Nixon (“a good man,” Obama assured us) was now fully engaged, and Eric Holder was also on the case. In addition, the Missouri Highway Patrol had supplanted the yokels in the local police force. And they were under the command of Ron Johnson, who grew up in the neighborhood in question and, though Obama didn’t say it, is African-American. Johnson promptly implemented

Hillary Rodham Clinton seems hung up on smart and stupid. During her term as secretary of state, Clinton talked a lot about “smart power” — elevating diplomacy and development alongside military might. Now, she is distancing herself from the foreign policy of the president she served, telling the Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg that “great nations need organizing principles, and ‘Don’t do stupid stuff’ is not an organizing principle.” But what if she had been the one in the Oval Office since 2009? How different would her foreign policy be from President Obama’s? These questions are clearly more than a thought experiment.

We’ve been told for days now that that the reason there was rioting in Ferguson is because protesters were “provoked” by militarized police. I agree with some of my colleagues that cops should look like cops (see Kevin’s excellent piece here), and it is deeply unsettling to see police atop armored vehicles training weapons on protesters. On the other hand, there is no justification to throw projectiles at police, no matter what kind of uniforms they are wearing or what kind of vehicles they have, nor is there any justification for destroying or stealing other people’s property. Now, we’ve had

This is ridiculous. AUSTIN (KXAN) – A grand jury has handed up an indictment against Gov. Rick Perry in connection with the investigation into an effort to force Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg to resign. Perry wanted Lehmberg to resign because she had been busted for drunk driving. It’s not good to have a drunk driver, captured on camera abusing the officers who arrested her, heading up the Public Integrity Unit. At the center of the issue is a complaint about intimidation stemming from Perry’s threat to veto of $7.5 million in state funding to the Public Integrity Unit

The Gateway Pundit can now confirm from two local St. Louis sources that police Officer Darren Wilson suffered facial fractures during his confrontation with deceased 18 year-old Michael Brown. Officer Wilson clearly feared for his life during the incident that led to the shooting death of Brown. This was after Michael Brown and his accomplice Dorian Johnson robbed a local Ferguson convenience store. Local St. Louis sources said Wilson suffered an “orbital blowout fracture to the eye socket.” This comes from a source within the District Attorney’s office and confirmed by the St. Louis County Police.

President Obama returned to his vacation home at Martha’s Vineyard after briefly interrupting his vacation for two days of meetings in Washington, D.C. Obama met with his economic team Tuesday before leaving the White House at 4:22 pm to return to his vacation home. He did not react to the news that broke later that evening about an ISIS video that showed the beheading of American journalist James Wright Foley. The National Security Council reacted, however, in a statement provided by spokesperson Caitlin Hayden. “We have seen a video that purports to be the murder of U.S. citizen James Foley by ISIL,” Hayden said.

It was a dream dying.” These words could equally describe what has become of Barack Obama’s foreign policy since his second inauguration. The president, according to the infatuated view of his political aides and media flatterers, was supposed to be playing o jogo bonito, the beautiful game—ending wars, pressing resets, pursuing pivots, and restoring America’s good name abroad.

From nearly 1,000 miles away, several Redskins players used the Monday Night Football stage to draw attention to the situation that has been unfolding in Ferguson, Missouri by running onto FedExField with their hands up in the air. Ferguson is where unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown was shot and killed by a white police officer on Aug. 9. Witnesses have said he was not aggressive toward the officer and had his hands raised above his head before he was shot. As a result, the words “hands up, don’t shoot” have become a rallying cry of protesters, both in Ferguson and online.
