Amazon dragged into EU tax crackdown
Telegraph [UK], by Denise Roland

Amazon has been dragged into a major EU tax crackdown after officials demanded documents relating to the online retail giant´s tax affairs. The EU´s competition commission has asked Luxembourg, where Amazon´s European business is based, to hand over details on the company´s tax payments, according to a report in the FT. An EU official told the newspaper that Brussels was seeking more information on the nature of the tax deal that had been struck between Luxembourg and Amazon. The move could lead to a full-blown investigation into the retailer´s European tax arrangements. The online retail giant has joined a growing

Comments:
You know Obama is salivating over the thought of extra money.

Related: bear in mind that those US states not charging sales tax on Amazon soon will. SC (and some other states) have instituted systems to collect taxes on Amazon purchases.

Frustrated by another tax detail, I´ve turned to Walmart for many purchases. They, of course, charge sales tax. It´s just easier--and sometimes a lot cheaper because you can usually get free shipping or a free pick-up at your local store. It´s amazing what they offer in their online inventory. Service and timely delivery have been very good.

Amazon should just stop doing business in the EU to show them who´s boss but I´m sure the extra income far outweighs the disputed taxes. Buying books wirelessly for the Kindle is one of the most brilliant and convenient shopping methods ever devised.

A British man convicted and jailed for Islamic terrorism in 1999 has, in a lengthy and indulgent feature with Sky News, blamed violent computer games for “dehumanised” young Britons going abroad to fight for the Islamic state. The twelve minute report – which showed at regular intervals yesterday on Sky News – features a number of recorded interviews with British Muslims expressing their opinions on the reasons for the radicalisation of young muslims. One, a rapper, blames ‘injustice’ and cites Muslims in the UK who are so distrustful of the government and media they don’t even believe the political executions

ISTANBUL - Turkey would welcome senior figures from Egypt´s outlawed Muslim Brotherhood after they were asked to leave Qatar under pressure from other Gulf Arab states, Turkish media quoted President Tayyip Erdogan as saying late on Monday. A senior Brotherhood official based in London said on Saturday that Qatar had asked seven senior figures from the movement to leave the country after its neighbors pressed it to stop backing the Islamists. Senior Brotherhood figures would be welcome to come to Turkey if they wished to do so, Turkish television stations quoted Erdogan as telling reporters on his plane back from an official

The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) has released a video of an imam in Gaza who was filmed during a Friday sermon while brandishing a gun and saying that weapons were the Palestinian Arabs´ only means to establish a caliphate. MEMRI noted that the cleric, Sheik Iyad Abu Funun, was released to the Palestinian Authority-assigned areas of Judea and Samaria as part of the Shalit prisoner swap deal in 2011. He was arrested again, and was sentenced to complete his 10-year term in prison. In July 2013, after threatening to go on a hunger strike, he was released and deported to

Last night, David Cameron made his final appeal to Scottish voters to remain part of the Union. In a passionate speech in Aberdeen, he sought to spell out to Scots the full scale of the awful and momentous choice that faces them--whether or not to break up the country “that all of us call home”. The Prime Minister has been accused by the Yes campaign of “scaremongering”: but as he said, it is his duty to set out the true consequences of such a vote, and to explain how disastrous it would be not just for Britain, but for Scots

MANILA--The Philippines has evacuated more than 12,000 people from around the foot of its most active volcano as the crater glows red and authorities warn of a possible eruption. Mount Mayon, known for its near-perfect cone shape in the coconut-growing central Bicol region, has recorded a series of recent quakes and rockfalls, indicating a possible eruption within weeks. "We are now raising the alert status of Mayon Volcano from alert level 2 to 3," Renato Solidum, head of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), said on Tuesday.

[Snip] He touched on almost every major issue related to the Scottish referendum debate without labouring any points. It makes you wonder why the opposition to the ´Yes´ campaign was primarily run from Labour HQ, which has consistently failed to deliver a solid message, leading to the precarious position our union finds itself in with just 3 days to go until Scots go to the polls.

The Department of Labor coordinated with the White House on whether or not to release hidden portions of former Labor Secretary Hilda Solis’ schedule as Solis battled an FBI investigation into her illegal fundraising for President Obama. The White House then asked for the name of the conservative group making the request — information that Labor officials were eager to give up. As TheDC previously

Democrats are now (very slightly) favored to hold the Senate majority on Nov. 4, according to Election Lab, the Post´s statistical model of the 2014 midterm elections. Election Lab puts Democrats´ chances of retaining their majority at 51 percent -- a huge change from even a few months ago when the model predicted that Republicans had a better than 80 percent chance of winning the six seats they need to take control. There’s a lot of competition for Barack Obama’s biggest lie. The man who could assure the American public with a straight face over thirty times that they could keep their doctor under his health plan, when he knew that to be completely false, is one hellluva fibber. But execrable as that serial prevarication may have been, it doesn’t hold a proverbial candle to his most recent whopper — that the Islamic State is not Islamic — not to mention its corollary, or perhaps subsidiary lie, that real religions do not indulge in murder. Islam has been doing that pretty much straight

Is a mutiny happening around President Obama? It appears possible that the president may not have made two of his most recent decisions with complete free will. The announcement that he would delay his immigration initiative until after the election and his formal announcement that the United States would take military action against the Islamic State could have been coerced. Maybe Democratic leaders in Congress and a few members of the Obama team have had it. Could it be that, after President Obama briefed Democrats in Congress on the immigration plan, they balked? Maybe the president was told that, if he
