Amazon dragged into EU tax crackdown
Telegraph [UK], by Denise Roland

Amazon has been dragged into a major EU tax crackdown after officials demanded documents relating to the online retail giant´s tax affairs. The EU´s competition commission has asked Luxembourg, where Amazon´s European business is based, to hand over details on the company´s tax payments, according to a report in the FT. An EU official told the newspaper that Brussels was seeking more information on the nature of the tax deal that had been struck between Luxembourg and Amazon. The move could lead to a full-blown investigation into the retailer´s European tax arrangements. The online retail giant has joined a growing

Comments:
You know Obama is salivating over the thought of extra money.

Related: bear in mind that those US states not charging sales tax on Amazon soon will. SC (and some other states) have instituted systems to collect taxes on Amazon purchases.

Frustrated by another tax detail, I´ve turned to Walmart for many purchases. They, of course, charge sales tax. It´s just easier--and sometimes a lot cheaper because you can usually get free shipping or a free pick-up at your local store. It´s amazing what they offer in their online inventory. Service and timely delivery have been very good.

Amazon should just stop doing business in the EU to show them who´s boss but I´m sure the extra income far outweighs the disputed taxes. Buying books wirelessly for the Kindle is one of the most brilliant and convenient shopping methods ever devised.

Kurdish forces ´retake Mosul

Kurdish forces in northern Iraq have taken control of Iraq´s largest dam after its capture by Islamic State (IS) militants, Kurdish officials say. Kurdish ground forces supported by US air strikes launched the operation to take Mosul dam on Sunday morning. Kurdish sources said they were still trying to clear mines and booby traps from the area round the dam, a process which could take several hours. The strategically important dam was seized by IS militants on 7 August. It supplies water and electricity to northern Iraq and there had been fears the IS militants could use it to flood

Nick Di Iorio, 28, Republican candidate for the 12th Congressional District in New York, experienced personally the precarious security situation in Israel on his visit to the Holy Land last week. A car driving Di Iorio from a visit to Sderot toward Jerusalem came under attack by a group of Arab boys “who hurled rocks at us and laughed,” Di Iorio recalled. Also in the car with Di Iorio was New York based philanthropist Ken Abramowitz, Chairman of American Friends of Likud, who accompanied him on his visit to Israel. No one was hurt in the attack, which took place not far

True to its usual ritual of condemning Israel and establishing an international commission of inquiry against it, the UN Council for Human Rights is directly responsible for the systematic killing of scores of Palestinians in Gaza. The bitter Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been going on for over 60 years and is rife with blood and emotion. Traditionally, the world, including Israel, has thought of the conflict as about territory, as a clash between cultures or a historical struggle. Big oil and gas is starting to really like U.S. Sen. Tim Scott. The junior Republican from South Carolina is listed as the No. 4 recipient in campaign donations this election season that businesses tied to the oil and gas industry gave to the members of Congress´ upper chamber. Scott, a senator for less than two years, has collected $226,401 for the 2014 election cycle from groups with oil and gas ties, according to an analysis by the government watchdog OpenSecrets.org/Center for Responsive Politics. A British Army colonel´s life was saved by a US soldier who jumped in front of an assassin´s hail of bullets, it has been reported. The US Army reservist, who normally works for Apple, the Silicon Valley-based electronics company, was shot six times as an Afghan assailant opened fire on a group of high-ranking officers at a military training academy earlier this month, The Sunday Times said. The reservist, who has not been named, used his body as a shield to literally "take a bullet" for the senior British officer, and was hit twice in the leg and once in the shoulder, with a further three rounds stopped by his bulletproof vest.

Stability. Security. The peace of mind that comes from being able to get a decent job and provide for your family, in a country that you feel has a good future ahead of it and that treats people fairly. In a nutshell, that is what people in Britain want--and what the Government I lead is dedicated to building. A Travis County grand jury today indicted Gov. Rick Perry on two charges related to his effort last year to force District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg to resign after her drunken driving arrest. Grand jurors charged Perry, 63, with abuse of official capacity, a first-degree felony, and coercion of a public official. The indictments stemmed from Perry’s threat last summer to withhold $7.2 million in state money from Lehmberg’s office unless she step down – a threat he later carried out by vetoing an appropriation in the state budget. The money was earmarked for the state’s Public Integrity Unit, which is housed in Lehmberg’s office. Perry’s veto forced

This is ridiculous. AUSTIN (KXAN) – A grand jury has handed up an indictment against Gov. Rick Perry in connection with the investigation into an effort to force Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg to resign. Perry wanted Lehmberg to resign because she had been busted for drunk driving. It’s not good to have a drunk driver, captured on camera abusing the officers who arrested her, heading up the Public Integrity Unit. At the center of the issue is a complaint about intimidation stemming from Perry’s threat to veto of $7.5 million in state funding to the Public Integrity Unit

They say a prosecutor could get a grand jury to indict a ham sandwich, and this always seemed like hyperbole, until Friday night a Texas grand jury announced an indictment of governor Rick Perry. The “crime” for which Perry faces a sentence of 5 to 99 years in prison is vetoing funding for a state agency. The conventions of reporting — which treat the fact of an indictment as the primary news, and its merit as a secondary analytic question — make it difficult for people reading the news to grasp just how farfetched this indictment is. One person was shot and seven people arrested early this morning as police used smoke and tear gas to impose a curfew following the killing of an unarmed black teenager. Officers are seeking the person who shot the critically-wounded victim after the 12am-5am curfew took hold in Ferguson, Missouri - eight days after Michael Brown, 18, was shot dead by police. Police said their strong response came after people broke into a restaurant and took position on the roof overlooking officers, while another man flashed a handgun as armoured vehicles approached. The scandal that erupted Friday night involved millions of dollars, statehouse power plays—oh yeah, and alcohol, police, and masks. Texas Governor Rick Perry was indicted Friday on charges of abuse of power—a first degree felony—and coercion—a third degree felony. The charges stem from a 2013 scandal that has been quietly rumbling in the Lone Star State as Perry has been floated as a viable contender for the Republican nomination in 2016. This is a complex case, which might be why it has not made national headlines the way other recent, state-level scandals (like Bridgegate, in New Jersey) have. Below, I have outlined

A grand jury in Travis County, Texas, indicted Governor Rick Perry today. Why? For exercising his constitutional prerogative by threatening to veto, and then vetoing, an appropriation to support the public corruption unit in Travis County’s district attorney’s office. This followed the arrest of the county’s district attorney, Democratic Party activist Rosemary Lehmberg, for drunk driving, after she was found “with an open bottle of vodka in the front passenger seat of her car in a church parking lot in Austin.” Ms. Lehmberg served 45 days in jail. The Travis County district attorney’s office has long been a cesspool of corruption.

The Obama administration has done little to calm racial tensions as they spread from Manhattan to St. Louis to Los Angeles. Quite the opposite, some top officials have fueled African-American fears of racism with false accusations of anti-black discrimination. Attorney General Eric Holder’s race-baiting is no secret. Justice Department documents show the nation’s top cop gave thousands of dollars to help the Rev. Al Sharpton organize marches protesting the death of Trayvon Martin. Now he’s sent the civil-rights unit to St. Louis to do the same thing in the fatal shooting of Michael Brown. Less known, however, is the role of Labor Secretary Thomas
