Ravenel likely to jump
into Senate race Friday

Post & Courier [Charleston, SC], by Schuyler Kropf

Original Article

Posted By:Attercliffe, 7/4/2014 8:01:05 AM

Former S.C. Treasurer Thomas Ravenel is expected to announce his candidacy for U.S. Senate on Friday as an independent hopeful against Republican incumbent Lindsey Graham. Ravenel said Wednesday that a "large announcement" is planned for Friday and that he will appear in Greenville, but otherwise declined to give specifics. A copy of Ravenel´s schedule says he plans on attending the Red White and Blue Festival in Greenville on July 4. Ravenel recently confirmed he had hired a private vendor to help him collect the minimum 10,000 signatures of South Carolina voters he needs to be placed on the November ballot

Comments:
Personable, from a well-known family (our beautiful new-ish bridge is named the Ravenel Bridge), but with a history containing a cocaine sentence (mentioned near the end of the piece).

Could make a three-way race and that could result in the Democrat being elected. But would that be any worse than Graham?

I know nothing about Ravenel, but on its face it looks like the typical Dem plan to split the Rep vote. If the Republican party does not have a liberal counterpart to put on the ballot to even this out we will lose this election and many more to come. Our country is under attack and its time to use strategies to fight back.

This IS a Democrat plan! It´s very obvious that they will use this over and over in states where they need to win in order to hold the Senate. REPUBLICANS had better to wake up and figure out a way to stop this!

Y´all, Ravenel is a Republican, er, that is except for this election, where he´s turned "Independent." His whole biography is full of conservative flags. His conviction and sentence involving cocaine while he was state treasurer in the Haley government might make a difference. Check Wikipedia for more.

It sounds like a ploy for attention. Does he have the signatures? He probably needs 15,000 to have 10,000 valid ones. I´m no fan of Graham, but at this point I think he´s better than a Dem. He won his last election 58-42 in 2008. Ravenel probably wouldn´t draw enough votes to be a factor.

And it might be interesting to see how many of those valid signatures are registered Democrats.

So, what everyone seems to be saying is that they think three Democrats will be running for the same seat, instead of just two. Why would the Dems do that? They are guaranteed a liberal leftist already. Why would they throw a third person in the mix?

MH17 plane crash: Dutch

BBC News [UK], by Staff    Original Article

Pro-Russian rebels have allowed Dutch investigators to examine bodies from the crashed Malaysia Airlines plane at a railway station in eastern Ukraine. The three Dutch experts said the train might leave the town of Torez later. All 298 people on board flight MH17 died when it crashed over the rebel-held area on 17 July. The US and other nations say there is growing evidence of Russian complicity in the crash. Meanwhile, heavy fighting is reported in the main rebel-held city of Donetsk. The clashes--involving heavy weapons--are continuing near the city´s airport and the railway station, eyewitnesses say.

In the four days since Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 came down on the Ukrainian border, the basic facts of the situation have remained unchanged. David Cameron last night warned Vladimir Putin his billionaire ‘cronies’ will have their assets frozen in London unless he co-operates with the probe into Flight MH17. The Prime Minister vented his fury at Russia’s obstruction in a 30-minute phone call--the first direct contact between the leaders since the jet was shot down with the loss of 298 lives. He effectively blamed Russia, telling Mr Putin he had ‘contributed to an appalling tragedy’. And he urged him to ‘change course’ by calling off the armed thugs in eastern Ukraine thought to have been behind the atrocity that left ten Britons dead.

At a political event in Wilmington, Delaware, on Thursday, President Obama devoted only 40 seconds to the shooting down of the Malaysian airline, his first statement to the world following the news. His emotionless reference to the attack as ‘a terrible tragedy’ seemed disconnected from the horrific moment, particularly as he immediately reverted to script to praise his administration and criticise Republicans. It was a far cry from President Reagan’s 1983 fierce denunciation of the Soviet shooting down of a Korean airliner as a ‘crime against humanity’. LOS ANGELES — Actor James Garner, whose whimsical style in the 1950s TV Western “Maverick” led to a stellar career in TV and films such as “The Rockford Files” and his Oscar-nominated “Murphy’s Romance,” has died, police said. He was 86. He was found dead of natural causes at his home in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles Saturday evening, Los Angeles police officer Alonzo Iniquez said early Sunday. Police responded to a call around 8 p.m. PDT and confirmed Garner’s identity from family members, Iniquez told The Associated Press. There was no immediate word on a more specific cause of death. Garner had suffered a stroke in May 2008, just weeks after his 80th birthday.
