The American Longrifle Has A Censored
But Very Patriotic Story To Tell

Forbes, by Frank Miniter

Original Article

On this Independence Day it’s worth hearing how the American Longrifle helped win the battle for American freedom. If you don’t know this rifle’s starring role in American history you can’t understand America’s link to the gun or why so many firearms manufacturers are moving or expanding away from states that have banned their products. For this history lesson I stopped in to see Phil Schreier, the senior curator for the NRA’s National Firearms Museum, in Fairfax, VA. As we stood in the middle of the biggest gun museum in all the world he told me, “If school kids were

FTA: “Anti-gun politicians who’re fond of saying that ‘weapons of war have no place in civilian hands’ are either unaware of American history or are dishonest,” says Phil.
In most---think Tyrant Hussein---it is both; but in every case the latter.

The historian is right that the fact - that the British Regulars were going to sieze the rifles cached by the Colonists - is glossed over by the ´educational´ system. Another point is that these rifles were superior in many ways to the Regulars´ muskets. And most importantly the Colonists knew how to use the rifles for hunting - and any other shooting. There seems to be a parallel with the English Longbow used by the yeoman farmers - a weapon that required time & training to use well. Those yeoman archers served in war for the English when they were fighting the French.

I would encourage anyone with an interest in this story to visit Williamsburg. There you will find gunsmiths proceeding through the rigor of making a longrifle. You make your steel, you see, an adventure in itself. Then you hammer the steel into a long thin strip. Then you hammer the strip in a spiral around a mandrel (hot-welding along the way) to make the barrel. On some flintlocks the borders of the strip are still visible. Then you make the firing mechanism.
Then you make your own gunpowder, another difficult task.
Takes a lot of man-hours. But if it is done right, you eat every day.

FTA "law-abiding people shouldn’t be put in a position where they’re potentially less armed than those who might prey on them" - Which is exactly what the Obama regime is attempting to do, by limiting the weapons that can be owned by civilians to slow-loading, low-capacity hunting guns, while simultaneously building up an standing army by arming every bureaucracy with automatic weapons, flak suits, and armored vehicles - while buying up, literally, billions of rounds of ammunition. Clearly, he expects a domestic war and doesn´t want to encounter too much resistance.

Many years ago I stopped at a gun museum near Tulsa, Oklahoma. It is the JM Davis museum and is still there (I think). They have thousands of examples of guns from every era. It was amazing and overwhelming to see so much nice iron. There were dozens of variations of the 1917 Enfield even. (I remember because I had just bought one weeks earlier).
There are several unique things about being a free American. They are all under assault by the progressives/communists we have in DC. The right to own that nice iron is certainly among them.

Although my knowledge of firearms is rudimentary at best, I believe every firearms enthusiast would have to revere a visit to the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, WY.

Of the countless lessons we’ve learned from liberals over the past few years, none is more critical than this: If Democrats find an issue important enough, and if doing something feels like the “right thing,” Barack Obama has the power to act without any regard for separation of powers. So what makes anyone believe that war would be any different? This week the president okayed airstrikes against ISIS targets—allying us with Assad Bashar, possibly Iran and definitely Qatar—using an unrelated 13-year old AUMF as his legal mandate. Seems like a big deal. It might even be a good idea. Yet, even

Changes to the forms required for firearms purchases asking questions about the buyer’s race and ethnicity have drawn strong reaction from gun dealers, privacy advocates and lawmakers. Form 4473, required for an over-the-counter sale by a federally-licensed dealer, now asks first whether a buyer is Hispanic or Non-Hispanic, followed by a question delving into more detailed race-based information. Critics want to know why the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives quietly made the change in 2012. Sen Roy Blunt, R-Mo., sent a letter to ATF Director Todd Jones asking why the information was being collected and whether the data had ever been

Phebe was especially known for its high-quality nursing care, serving as a training hospital for nearby Cuttington University, one of the country´s few nursing schools. A few hours after arriving in the emergency room, the woman was admitted to the medicine ward with a list of potential infections -- all the usual suspects in Bong County: malaria, typhoid, sepsis. A judge granted a two-month trial delay on Wednesday for Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, but denied a defense request to move his trial from Boston. Judge George O´Toole ruled that the trial will begin Jan. 5 instead of Nov. 3, but said there´s no reason to assume in advance that a fair jury cannot be selected in Massachusetts. Defense attorneys had asked that the trial be moved to Washington, D.C., citing extensive media coverage in Boston and evaluations of public sentiment by their experts. They also asked for a trial delay until at least September 2015, saying they have not

President Obama should be commended for yesterday’s air attacks against ISIS. In addition, his decision to bomb the jidhadist Khorasan group, which is believed to be plotting attacks against the West, is praiseworthy. As to this affiliate of al Qaeda, Obama seems, for once, to be acting rather than reacting. Even so, I tend to agree with Max Boot who argues that the most consequential news from the Levant yesterday is not the air attacks, but rather advances by ISIS on the ground. In Iraq, ISIS attackers in Anbar Province reportedly killed more than 300 Iraqi soldiers after a weeklong siege

The Clinton Global Initiative, which gathers in New York this week for its 10th annual meeting, has always had a Hollywood feel to it, not least because there are invariably a few celebrities invited to mingle with the corporate suits and international development worthies. This year’s batch includes actor-activists Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Ashley Judd and Eva Longoria. The biggest celebrity, of course, is typically the former president himself, who provides participants with plenty of photo ops as he guides the conversation like a cross between an eminent professor and an ebullient Oscar host. WASHINGTON - A record 20 percent of adult Americans, or 42 million people, have never married, marking a U.S. demographic and social shift, according to an analysis released on Wednesday. The rise in never-married adults is caused by several factors, including later ages for marriage and more people living together and raising children outside of wedlock, the report by the Pew Research Center said. In 2012, 23 percent of men and 17 percent of women 25 and older had never been married, marking a widening gap between the sexes. In 1960, 10 percent of men and 8 percent of women had never

The Republican Party’s top leader in Congress is catching flak for a comment that appears to call the jobless lazy – a comment that has rekindled an old challenge for the party: appearing insensitive or uncaring toward Americans who are poor or in financial difficulty. House Speaker John Boehner was asked after a speech last week to comment on a plan for addressing poverty – promoted by a Republican colleague, Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin. Speaker Boehner gave a response that was favorable toward Representative Ryan´s plan, but not so favorable about Americans’ work ethic.
