Resenting the Republic

You wouldn’t think, five years into the Obama presidency, that so many liberal Americans wouldn’t like America. A new Pew survey found that 44 percent of Americans don’t often feel pride in being an American, and only 28 percent said that America is the greatest country in the world. Respondents who “often feel proud to be American” were overwhelmingly conservative (from 72 percent to 81 percent, depending on the kind of conservative). A majority (60 percent) of “solid liberals” said they don’t often feel proud to be an American. The polling data only prove what has been obvious for a while. Georgia representative

This suggests a great topic to explore with your liberal acquaintances: Why do you hate your country so much?

Pew polls should not be taken as legitimate.

My wife took a call from Pew on a similar poll a few days ago. The caller asked to speak to the youngest person 18 or older in the household. My wife is 69, but she fit the requirement as stated. The first question was "are you happy with the way your life is going?" My wife asked how the question was meant - personally, financially, economically, politically, or what. The caller replied, rather condescendingly, "any thing you would like it to mean". My wife´s response was "maybe you had better find someone closer to 18, someone who is not so discerning as to answer meaningless questions". That was the end of the survey.

Pew and similar "progressive" organizations generate these spurious and dishonest polls in an effort to try to sway the public in a way that encourages their "cause". This is just another thread of the Alinsky driven attack on our great country, using, by the way, not-for-profit taxfree dollars against us. It is truly disgusting.

For conservatives who are concerned that the Obama administration is out of control, there is only one real way to stop it. And, no, it’s not impeachment. It’s the power of the purse. There is only one way to exercise that power: by Republicans, who already have a majority in the House of Representatives, gaining control of the U.S. Senate. Like last year’s hurricane season, which had some stiff winds but no major storms, this year’s primary season has not blown down any Senate incumbents. This result puts the Republican Party in a good position to recapture the upper chamber and finally be able

It is hard to exaggerate the drama or the stakes of the leadership battle now playing out in Baghdad. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is desperately clinging to power, even summoning elite troops to the Green Zone where the government is based. Yet many in his own Dawa party are deserting him. Enough Shiite politicos have turned against Maliki that his own State of Law slate (a larger grouping of Shiite parties which includes Dawa along with others) has nominated another candidate–Haider al-Abadi–as prime minister. Iraq’s president has now asked Abadi to form a government, which he has 30 days to

The Obamas and Clintons sure know how to summer! And you have to hand it to them, they aren’t letting their position as standard-bearers of the party committed to end income equality get in the way. While the president and his family enjoy a lavish getaway in tony ?Martha’s Vineyard, the woman who wants his job is also indulging in a glitzy summer vacay. Hillary and Bill Clinton spared no expense for their digs in the Hamptons — shelling out a cool $100G for a three-week stay in one of America’s most exclusive summer destinations. It is such common sense as to be undeniable that basic journalism requires a party label to be affixed to a story about an elected public official, the president excepted. It is the DNA of the “who” in a news report. “Senator Robert Byrd, the Democratic senator from West Virginia, died today.” Take out “Democratic” and try that sentence. It doesn’t work. “Mike Lee, GOP senator from Utah and God’s gift to mankind, coasted to reelection last night.” Ditto. It follows that the rule applies to stories about political scandal, precisely because it’s just that — politics. But what happens when

Mr. Nancy Pelosi is ignoring a California arbitrator’s order to pay former NFL coach Dennis Green nearly $1 million for coaching his defunct football team. Neither Pelosi, nor Hambrecht have paid Green, though it has now been six months since the decision. “Pelosi is in a defiant position now. Hillary Clinton and congressmen alike have called on Obama to arm Syria’s rebels. But the president fumed at lawmakers in a private meeting for suggesting he should’ve done more. President Obama got angry at lawmakers who suggested in a private meeting that he should have armed the Syrian rebels, calling the criticism “horseshit.” The argument that America should have done more in Syria, made for years by foreign policy leaders in both parties and several members of Obama’s senior national security team, was brought back to the fore this past weekend. Obama and Hillary Clinton gave dueling interviews in which they publicly

There was a time not so long ago when President Obama boasted of how he had “ended” the Iraq War. It was, in his telling, a sign of his stalwart fidelity to his word. A video produced by his 2012 presidential campaign was titled “Ending the War in Iraq: A Promise Kept.” His Web site said in December 2011: “This month, President Obama is making good on his promise to bring the last American troops home from Iraq in time for the holidays.” The president portrayed the complete withdrawal of US troops as testimony to his exemplary political character. “You know I say what

It was implausible to me that Barack Obama never knew Rev. Jeremiah Wright hated Jews. At best, Obama made a deal with this anti-Semitic racist, who helped Obama launch his political career. Still, back in 2008, Jews — displaying the cognitive dissonance of a captive Democratic voter bloc — gave Obama the benefit of the doubt for the same reason most Jews continue to support him: he’s (half) black. Jews favor underdogs and victims (though really, Obama is neither). As many Jews assimilated into America over the last century, some downplayed their Jewish identity — changing names, intermarrying and, most of all,

On the one hand, by his own admission, what’s happening in northern Iraq is genocidal in intent. On the other hand, Farm Neck sure is a sweet course. Dilemmas, dilemmas. He did authorize military action before hitting the links, but then so did Bush and that didn’t spare him from lefty mockery for years afterward — and Bush quit the game in 2003 because he felt it sent “the wrong signal” when bombs were falling. But maybe that explains it. Maybe it’s okay for O to play because this is still “Bush’s war.” Or is it? In a post over the weekend, Joel
