The likelihood of an ordinary American walking out of a bookstore with a copy of Hard Choices under his/her arm is about 1 in 10 million. Some liberal organization buying a few dozen to use as paperweights is far more likely.

Vietnam War veteran Jim Pudlas started his bucket list last year, when he was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer that doctors blamed on his exposure to the herbicide Agent Orange. Pudlas, 70, a Purple Heart recipient, scratched No. 1 off his list by purchasing a 2001 white Mustang convertible that he drives around his hometown, Freeport, west of Rockford. On Friday, he accomplished No. 2: touching the names of his former platoon buddies on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial wall in Washington, D.C. WASHINGTON — On a patch of land in the shadow of the Capitol’s dome, a new memorial for soldiers will, for the first time here, honor the living as well as the dead. It is unusual in another way, too: It is the only monument in Washington dedicated solely to those who have been disabled in the nation’s wars.
