Lawsuit Contests New York’s
Teacher Tenure Laws

New York Times, by Al Baker

Original Article

Posted By:LittleHoodedMonk, 7/3/2014 8:08:48 PM

An education advocacy group on Thursday threw down the first challenge to New York’s teacher tenure laws in the wake of a landmark court decision in California last month finding such laws there unconstitutional. A lawsuit filed in State Supreme Court on Staten Island argues that the tenure laws violate the State Constitution’s guarantee of a “sound basic education” by making it difficult to fire bad teachers and by protecting the most veteran teachers in the event of layoffs, regardless of their quality. The suit, filed against city and state education officials, names as plaintiffs 11 public school students whose parents belong to a

Comments:
First the extreme liberal state of Kalifornia, and now, New York at least debating this. Huge if it happens, not only for students, but unions that don´t want to lose their control of school curriculum and employees.

This article is kind of interesting because Baker presents a somewhat balanced account. A rarity for the formerly respected NYT.

Tenure is usually granted by other tenured employees. Old boys club. I bet Bill Ayers is tenured.

Central American leaders
blame U.S. for border crisis
Washington Times, by S.A. Miller    Original Article
Posted By: LittleHoodedMonk- 7/24/2014 10:10:07 PM     Post Reply
A day before meeting with President Obama at the White House to discuss the border crisis, the presidents of Honduras and Guatemala blamed the wave of unaccompanied children inundating the U.S. on American foreign policy and on gridlock in Congress over immigration reform. Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez said ambiguity in Washington’s immigration debate has helped human smugglers, called “coyotes,” convince Central Americans that they can stay in the U.S. if they make the long, illegal journey. “That is a situation that the coyotes are very perversely taking very much an opportunity to exploit,”

European court says CIA

Warsaw - The CIA ran a secret jail on Polish soil, the European Court of Human Rights ruled on Thursday, piling pressure on Poland, one of Washington´s closest allies, to break its long silence about the global programme for detaining al Qaeda suspects. The court said it had been established that the CIA used a facility in a northern Polish forest, code named "Quartz", as a hub in its network for interrogating suspected al Qaeda operatives rounded up after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. Poland has always denied that the CIA had a jail on its territory, even as leaks from former U.S. intelligence officials, and a Senate investigation, brought more and more

UN Human Rights Council´s
unbridled hypocrisy toward Israel
Jerusalem Post [Israel], by Editorial    Original Article

The UN Human Rights Council’s ludicrous decision on Wednesday to open an international inquiry into Israeli violations that may have been committed during Operation Protective Edge in Gaza is outrageously hypocritical. This travesty of justice should be rejected outright by decent people and nations everywhere, as the Prime Minister’s Office in Jerusalem beseeched. Instead of backing Israel’s justifiable right as a democratic state to respond forcefully to clear human rights violations by Gaza’s Hamas rulers both before and during the current military campaign, the international forum in Geneva chose to side with the terrorists.

Baghdad - Iraq’s leaders selected Fouad Massoum, a longtime Kurdish politician and former guerrilla fighter who took up arms against Saddam Hussein’s regime, on Thursday as the country’s new president, an important step in forming a new government that the international community and Iraq’s religious authorities have called for and described as crucial to confronting a growing Sunni insurgency. Mr. Massoum, 76, replaces Jalal Talabani, who has been president since 2005 and was seen as a rare unifying figure among Iraq’s many factions but has been largely absent from the political scene since suffering a stroke in late 2012.

The US national aviation authority has lifted a ban on American flights to Israel, but warned of a "very fluid situation" amid intense fighting with Palestinians in nearby Gaza, AFP reports Thursday. White flags baffle NYPD:

The New York Police Department still can’t explain how a group of five individuals were able to hoist two white flags atop the Brooklyn Bridge, which is supposed to be heavily monitored. Police haven’t identified any of the suspects responsible or any motive behind the mysterious white flags — which would typically signal a surrender or truce — flying high atop the New York City landmark. “We’re lucky they just put a flag up there — and not a bomb,” a law enforcement source told the New York Post. “It’s an embarrassment.” Surveillance footage showed five individuals crossing the bridge about 3 a.m. Tuesday. They climbed a locked gate

Republican lawmakers said Wednesday their suspicions about Obamacare’s anti-fraud measures have been validated and it is “egregious” that 11 out of 12 government investigators were able to get subsidized Obamacare over the phone. Seth J. Bagdoyan, an acting director for forensic audits at the Government Accountability Office, told the House Ways and Means Committee the government is shelling out $2,500 a month, or $30,000 per year, for the false applicants. General Motors recalls

General Motors (GM) is recalling an additional 717,949 vehicles due to a range of issues, including loose bolts and potentially incomplete welding on some seat hooks. The carmaker has recalled nearly 29 million vehicles this year, most due to faulty ignition switches. The recall-related repairs are expected to cost GM $1.2bn (£700m). GM was criticised for reacting too late to the switch issue, but said it was "enhancing" its approach to safety. "We are bringing greater rigor and discipline to our analysis and decision making," Jeff Boyer, vice president global vehicle safety at GM, said in a statement.

Denver - Some women are getting sick of the Democrats’ “war on women.” Take Laura Carno, who became so fed up with the nonstop “war on women” political advertising campaign in Colorado that she put together a radio ad of her own. It’s aimed at Sen. Mark Udall, a Democrat who’s pushing the theme in his re-election bid against Republican Rep. Cory Gardner. “I have to ask, Sen. Unspecified glitches in the department´s Consular Consolidated Database have resulted in "significant performance issues, including outages" in the processing of applications for passports, visas and reports of Americans born abroad since Saturday, spokeswoman Marie Harf said. She said the problem is worldwide and not specific to any particular country, citizenship document, or visa category.

I received a call from my sons’ school in March telling me that my oldest needed to be picked up early. He had been given a one-day suspension because he had thrown a chair. He did not hit anyone, but he could have, the school officials told me. JJ was 4 at the time. I agreed his behavior was inappropriate, but I was shocked that it resulted in a suspension. For weeks, it seemed as if JJ was on the chopping block. He was suspended two more times, once for throwing another chair and then for spitting on a student

In scandal after scandal in the Obama administration, President Obama has said he didn’t know about the problems until he heard it on the news. But the president changed his tune about his supposed ignorance at a Democratic fundraiser near Seattle on Tuesday night. Mr. Obama told supporters that he doesn’t watch the news because, “Whatever they’re reporting about, usually I know.” That contrasts with the explanations that the president and his aides have given from scandals in the past few years ranging from long wait times and deaths at the VA, to the IRS targeting tea party groups, to the

A year after news of the Monica Lewinsky scandal broke, former First Lady Hillary Clinton allegedly told a Pulitzer-prize winning journalist that it was former President Bill Clinton’s abusive mother that caused his unfaithfulness and sex addiction, a new book claims. That journalist was Lucinda Franks and while her latest book, “Timeless: Love, Morgenthau, and Me,” doesn’t have much to do about the Clintons, the part that does offers never before reported information from a 1999 interview with the former First Lady. The New York Daily News obtained parts of the book a month before its scheduled August 2014 release.

While our current secretary of state John Kerry is under fire for sarcastically joking about Israel’s “pinpoint operation” in Gaza, one former secretary of state echoed those sentiments during an appearance on CNN Tuesday afternoon. Speaking to Wolf Blitzer, Madeleine Albright said she thinks Israel is “overdoing” it with its offensive into the Gaza Strip and losing some of its “moral authority” in the process. “I do think the point has to be made, if rockets are being shot at Israel, that Israel does have a right to defend itself,” Albright said. “But the bottom line is the question of proportionality.” Blitzer singled out her use of the word

Colchester – Experts estimate there are nearly 300 adult loons living on Vermont´s lakes and ponds, up from just a couple dozen 30 years ago. On Saturday, more than 200 volunteers spread out across Vermont for the annual loon survey. The results of the survey are trickling in, but Eric Hanson of the Vermont Center for Ecostudies and the coordinator of the Vermont Loon Conservation Project, said there are many more birds now than just a few years ago. He said 15 years ago there were around 100 loons. In 1983, biologists counted only 29. "It is a decent, stable population. I'm hoping that actually things do start to level out.

The chairman of the Federal Election Commission today blasted Democratic colleagues opposed to his effort to protect conservative media after they imposed rules on the publisher of Rep. Paul Ryan´s new book, opening the door to future book regulations -- or even a ban. "By failing to affirm this publisher’s constitutional right, statutory right, to disseminate a political book free from FEC conditions and regulations, we have effectively asserted regulatory jurisdiction over a book publisher,” warned Chairman Lee E. Goodman, one of three Republicans on the six-person FEC.
