The photo shows him in front of Tournament House (former Wrigley mansion in Pasadena) on the morning his being Grand Marshal was announced. He was absolutely thrilled at the prospect - it shows in his face!!!

If you haven´t already done so, read his biography Unbroken, a gripping, inspirational story by the author of Seabiscuit.

A deadly disease is set to hit the shores of the US, UK and much of the rest of the northern hemisphere in the coming months. It will swamp our hospitals, lay millions low and by this time next year between 250,000 and 500,000 worldwide will be dead, thousands of them in the US and Britain. Despite the best efforts of the medical profession, there’s no reliable cure, and no available vaccine offers effective protection for longer than a few months at a time. If you’ve been paying attention to recent, terrifying headlines, you may assume the illness is the

The father of a missing 6-year-old girl in Washington State was previously charged with molesting a young family member, court documents reveal. But authorities say James Wright, whose daughter Jenise was last seen on Saturday night, is not a suspect in his daughter’s disappearance. Wright was charged with molesting an 8-year-old girl in 2000, but the charge was dropped after he pleaded guilty to a lesser assault charge, according to court records. Police won’t comment on that charge, and say both parents have been cooperative. The parents also took lie detector tests, although authorities won’t release the results to the public.(Snip) Jenise’s

BAGHDAD — An Iraqi army airstrike targeting the Islamic State group that´s seized wide swaths of territory across the country´s north killed some 60 suspected militants Wednesday, state television reported. The report, which cited unnamed intelligence officials, could not be independently verified, nor did it say whether any civilians had been killed in the strike on the northern city of Mosul. The report said the strike freed about 300 people held by the Islamic State group at a downtown Mosul prison it had been using as a religious court and detention center, without elaborating. The 12-year-old boy who allegedly stabbed a 9-year-old playmate to death on a Michigan playground has been identified as Jamarion Lawhorn. Police say that after he stabbed Michael ´Conner´ Verkerke in a Kentwood, Michigan, trailer park on Monday night, Jamarion called 911 and confessed - telling police dispatchers ´Hi. I just stabbed somebody. Please pick me up.´ The Grand Rapids Press reports that Jamarion sobbed and trembled as he appeared in court on Tuesday to face murder charges. LOUISVILLE – Just three days after all looked lost, Tiger´s back is back, and he with it. The back spasms that he said caused him so much pain Sunday afternoon seemed to have disappeared Wednesday. Tiger Woods uneventfully, even blithely, hit a few dozen shots at the driving range as the gallery grew, then went out to the course, where he hit his first tee shot down the middle of the fairway. While he still appeared to have far from a perfect gait little more than four months after back surgery, he looked spry, and seemed thrilled to be back

Chantal Biya has single-handedly made mullet the new magnificent. Biya’s bouffant is a beauty school master’s thesis in contradictions. Somehow her hair manages to be short and long, rebellious yet elegant, unruly but controlled. And whether she’s visiting the pope or hanging out with Paris Hilton, the 43-year-old’s signature style remains unfazed. Here we humbly submit just a small sampling of the many coifs of Chantal. On July 22, Dr. Kent Brantly woke up feeling feverish. Fearing the worst, Brantly immediately isolated himself. Nancy Writebol´s symptoms started three days later. President Obama gave a press conference this evening. He started a little over an hour late without explanation. Reporters stuck to asking questions that they evidently knew Obama would be comfortable answering. None of them asked him about any of his administration scandals. ABC’s Jon Karl, usually a tough questioner of Obama and his spokesmen, asked a rambling question that played right into the Democrats’ “economic patriotism” canard. Despite the fact that the president showed a passionless, bloodless, disinterested face to the world, he still managed to do some damage. Chris Jansing of CNN asked Obama if the sanctions against Russia are working.

ATLANTA — In the early 2000s, a young researcher at the Centers for Disease Control named Greg Millett set out to solve an epidemiological mystery. Nobody could explain why black Americans, particularly black gay men, had such high rates of HIV infection compared to the rest of the population. How were they putting themselves in so much danger? What were they doing differently from everyone else? Millett began with a survey of the published research, but that only seemed to raise more questions. Study after study seemed to arrive at the same conclusion: Black gay men take fewer risks in the

Sen. Pat Roberts fended off an aggressive challenger Tuesday in the Kansas Republican primary, dealing another blow to a national tea party movement that has targeted longtime Washington incumbents. Milton Wolf, 43, a Leawood radiologist making his first run for public office, failed to pull the upset in the race against Roberts, 78, whose political dates to the late 1960s, when he was a congressional aide. After surviving the primary, Roberts is a huge favorite to win his fourth, six-year term in November. Republicans enjoy a nearly 20 percentage-point advantage among registered voters and have won every U.S. Senate race
