Foreign backpacker arrested for
staying in US half hour too long

TACOMA, Wash. -- A backpacker visiting from South America is locked in federal detention after reportedly over-extending his stay by 30 minutes. A Seattle immigration attorney has taken on the case for free, saying it´s "absurd." For six months Diego Simonassi said he roamed freely about the United States, backpacking all over the country. But, when his time was up on June 14 and he tried to enter Canada to continue his trip, he didn´t know he needed a visa to get through the border. Canadian authorities at the Peace Arch crossing turned him back to the US side.

Comments:
When the Canadians turned him back for not having a visa, the Americans arrested and detained him.

Who says we don´t take illegal immigration seriously?

That´s fine. He´ll get it straightened out and be on his way.

Those who travel around the world and cross many borders are expected to inform themselves so that these unfortunate incidents don´t occur. Some of us do so. Others, not so much.

Now go and round up the others who have overstayed for far longer periods.

(Two bits say this guy fits a .....profile. How un-PC.)

Smoke screen alert: He is from Uruguay! Take a look at his picture. He has backpacked around the world. I wonder how much time he spent in Iran or Pakistan . . . Uruguay is a hotbed of Islamists and Canada may have valid reasons to turn him away. I am just surprised we have not cut him loose on his own recognizance.

The Coeur d’Alene Casino dumped rock musician Ted Nugent from its summer schedule Monday, saying his “racist attitudes and views” have no place there. “We know what it’s like to be the target of hateful messages and we would never want to perpetuate hate in any way,” said Chief Allan, chairman of the Coeur d’Alene Tribe. Nugent, 65, was scheduled to perform Aug. 4 at the tribe’s casino-hotel in Worley, south of Coeur d’Alene. Complaints about the booking grew Monday after the Southern Poverty Law Center called attention to the appearance, labeling it a “PR disaster.”

A good friend of mine apologized to me today. You see, he voted for Barack Hussein Obama in the 2008 election and he lives in a so-called “swing state.” He told me that he had not voted for Obama in the 2012 election, but that he realized that by supporting him in 2008, he had help unleash a deadly virus onto the American scene. He simply said he was sorry. I think a good many Americans feel much the same as my good friend. They know that they were seduced by the very slick presentation that Barack Obama made in the

Conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status had their applications denied by IRS bureaucrats who called them names like “crazies,” “rabid” and other words that can’t be printed in a family newspaper. The tax agency is supposed to be run by nonpartisan, career professionals, but the latest set of emails released by the House Ways and Means Committee suggest the agency is anything but. Until the scandal erupted last year, Lois G. Lerner was in charge of the IRS division overseeing tax-exempt organizations. Congressional investigators have spent months sifting through her emails — the ones that didn’t “go missing” — to find out

An independent panel appointed by the Pentagon and Congress said Thursday that President Obama’s strategy for sizing the armed services is too weak for today’s global threats. The National Defense Panel called on the president to dump a major section of his 2014 Quadrennial Defense Review (QDR) and write a broader strategy that requires the military to fight on multiple fronts at once. It also said the shrinking U.S. armed forces, which are being downsized to fit that strategy and budget cuts, is a “serious strategic misstep on the part of the United States.” The forces’ numbers spelled out in Mr. Obama’s

Bill O’Reilly obviously doesn’t care for how President Obama and the Democrats are running things, but tonight he also had some tough words for the GOP. He asked guest Kate Obenshain why the Republicans continue to remain in the muck with the left and try to “destroy one another” instead of getting things done. O’Reilly asked, “Shouldn’t they rise above it?” Obenshain argued that it’s Democrats doing all the nasty politicking and name-calling, as well as the ginning up of impeachment. O’Reilly, however, noted some conservatives are bringing it up and said there’s “plenty of hate on both sides.” Obenshain objected, “No,

Perhaps it says something about us that our most interesting presidential candidates swear they won´t run for president. This is true of Sen. Elizabeth Warren, and it´s increasingly true of Mitt Romney. As regular readers of this column know, I´ve never been much of a Romney booster. I´ve also expressed skepticism about the notion he would run again. But let´s not let "a foolish consistency" cloud our judgment. There is reason to believe that a third try wouldn´t be an absurd venture. First, in the intervening years since 2012 — and on a range of issues, not the least of which is

The United Nations slammed Israel for possibly committing war crimes in its fight against Hamas — and then backed that accusation by suggesting the Jewish nation ought to be sharing its Iron Dome defensive technology with the very terror group it’s fighting. U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said to members of the media at an “emergency” meeting of the U.N. Human Rights Council that Israel was falling short in its duty to protect citizens in the Gaza Strip from getting killed by its rockets. “There is a strong possibility that international law has been violated, in a

Providing women with cost-free health-insurance coverage for contraceptives is one of the “obligations” of citizenship, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said Wednesday in an interview with Yahoo’s Katie Couric.(snip) “The decision that an employer could refuse to cover contraceptives meant that women would have to take care of that for themselves or the men who cared,” Ginsburg replied. “Contraceptive protection is something that every woman must have access to to control her own destiny,” she added. “I certainly respect the belief of the Hobby Lobby owners. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush has been traveling to New York in the past month to quietly meet with high-flying business leaders to ramp up interest in a potential presidential bid, sources tell Page Six. “He’s been meeting with groups of up to 15 people at private homes to tell them about some of his moderate points of view,” a source said. “He’s been meeting with Republicans, Democrats and independents.” Our source added, “They’re not fund-raisers. It’s for people here to get to know more about him. He’s said he has not decided whether he’ll run.” We hear that Bush was in town

WASHINGTON - The Pentagon called on Israel on Thursday to do more to protect civilian life during its military operations in Gaza, saying the conflict was taking too high a toll on civilians. "The civilian casualties in Gaza have been too high. And it´s become clear that the Israelis need to do more to live up to their very high standards - their very high and very public standards - for protecting civilian life," Pentagon spokesman Colonel Steve Warren said at a news briefing. Gaza officials say more than 1,370 Palestinians, most of them civilians, have been killed in the

Speaker John Boehner´s top immigration aide was at the center of a heated dispute between the speaker and Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) at a closed-door conference meeting Tuesday, according to several people who witnessed the altercation. Gohmert, speaking to the audience of Republican lawmakers during an open mic portion of the meeting, asked Boehner whether Becky Tallent, the speaker´s immigration aide who has drawn fire from immigration hawks, had authored the House GOP bill to address the border crisis scheduled to be voted on Thursday. Boehner rose from his chair and told Gohmert to knock it off, that he was

Over the past two years, the Obama administration has published hundreds and hundreds of rules — on how wheelchairs should be stowed aboard U.S. aircraft, how foreign trade zones should be regulated, how voting assistance should be provided for U.S. citizens overseas, and so on.There’s a problem, however: Technically speaking, these and some 1,800 other regulations shouldn’t be in effect because they weren’t reported to Congress as required. Yet there is little that lawmakers or the courts can do about it. The situation illustrates the obscure, Byzantine process used to create federal regulations — and how easily it can go awry. “It’s
