Medical marijuana dispensaries in Berkeley will likely soon be required to provide free pot to low-income members and homeless people, according to an ordinance approved by the city council on Tuesday. The city is also looking to approve a fourth dispensary, raising the current limit of three locations, as reported by the East Bay Express. The proposed ordinance requires that Berkeley dispensaries give away two percent of the amount of cannabis they sell each year low-income people. And the pot can´t be poor quality either. The proposed city ordinance reads (PDF) that the "medical cannabis provided under this section shall

Berkeley thinking:

´´We have a tremendous homeless problem, with people coming from all over the country to be homeless here. We keep giving them more and more free services, but we still have lots of homeless. What can we do?´´

The whole pot legalization movement is a move toward ´free´ publicly financed pot. The theory being presented to the public to win support is that legal pot will kill off crime as drug dealers no longer have to kill to win market sha5re. The argument falls apart at the junkie side of the equation - junkies still need money to buy pot and if they can´t get it due to lack of money because they can´t hold jobs, well, they will continue to commit crimes to finance their habit. Ergo, the argument for giving junkies free money to buy pot.

You can´t have crime-free free trade in drugs without free money for the buyers as well.

Meanwhile, does it ever occur to these Berkeley muddleheads that the reason junkies are ´low-incomes´ is that they spend all their productive hours smoking marijuana?

A federal judge on Tuesday granted a 90-day stay in a ruling that upended the District’s ban on carrying handguns in public. The order issued by U.S. District Court Judge Frederick Scullin brings a temporary reprieve to D.C. officials, who were sent scurrying over the weekend to interpret the effects of the ruling that gutted the city’s restrictive gun laws. An order issued Saturday by the judge struck down the city’s ban on the carrying of guns in public as unconstitutional. While still struggling to comprehend the scope of the order, D.C. police ordered officers to stop arresting people for carrying legally

Retiring Senator Tom Harkin (D., Iowa) suggested that Senate Democrats might force House Republicans to return to the Capitol during the August recess in order to pass a border crisis bill. Harkin allowed that “we don’t have to have a supplemental exactly right now,” explaining that President Obama’s administration only needs some of the funding he requested before the end of the fiscal year. “Are [House Republicans] going to vote and then go home?” Harkin told National Review Online Monday evening when asked what happens if the House votes on its border crisis package on Thursday. “That puts us in a bit

The ongoing war-of-words between Congressman Joaquín Castro (D-Texas) and Republican Gov. In July, Perry announced he was sending 1,000 National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexican border to help combat the flow of trafficking amid a surge of unaccompanied minors from Central America. Perry said the troops are needed because of federal inaction, but Castro expressed significant concerns about their presence. You can understand President Obama´s current political problems -- and how those problems could make things very tough for his party in this fall´s midterm election -- in a single word. And that word is "competence". Obama was elected in 2008 on a stated promise that he would restore competence to government. He pitched himself as the antidote to "Heck of a job, Brownie" and the Bush years, the person who would always put the most qualified candidate in every job in his Administration. That the basic functioning of government would never be in question. Almost six years on from
