The U.S. and five Arab countries launched dozens of air strikes against ISIS overnight in order to show the terror group that its attacks will not go unanswered, America´s top military officer said today. Army General Martin Dempsey said the raids in northern Syriawhich employed Tomahawk missiles, B1 bombers, F16, F18 and F22 strike fighters and drones--will have successfully proved to the radical Islamists that even strongholds such as the city of Raqqa do not represent a ´safe haven´. The meeting will come as a U.S. drive for a nuclear deal with Iran reaches a crucial point. Barren land, dams with no water reaching them, boats anchored in dried-up reservoirs and shrinking lake levels. These extraordinary images show the devastating impact the worst droughts in decades is having on the American West - and forecasters have predicted it is likely to continue. Around 430,000 acres of land will be left fallow in California - because there hasn´t been enough rain or snow coming from the nearby mountain ranges. Farmers - who are daily facing the prospect of losing their jobs and everything they have - are hoping for relief this winter, but the situation still remains dire.

Tony Blair is right. Before you harrumph and turn away, listen to his argument. It is--in short--that there is a global threat from militant Islamism. That it is spreading--and it is getting worse. And that we must act. It is clear that there is a fundamental problem with radical Islamism; clear that it is deep; clear that the solutions are not easy or presently to hand; clear that this is the work of a generation, not an election cycle; and clear--most important of all--that this is "our" challenge and not simply "theirs". For the past few weeks, we have witnessed the grotesque spectacle of three Britons paraded before us by the Islamic State (Isil), one murdered on camera, another on his knees and threatened with the same, and the third compelled to recite propaganda. The United Nations Climate Summit will begin in New York this Tuesday, but environmental activists didn’t wait. All day Sunday, they filled the streets of Manhattan for a march that featured Al Gore, New York City mayor Bill de Blasio, and various Hollywood actors. But they certainly didn’t act like a movement that was winning. There was a tone of fatalism in the comments of many with whom I spoke; they despair that the kind of radical change they advocate probably won’t result from the normal democratic process. It’s no surprise then that the rhetoric of climate-change activists has become increasingly

He was a leading figure in one of the biggest climate change marches to date. But it seems Robert F Kennedy Jr was not so forthcoming when it came to questions about his own carbon footprint. Confronted by a reporter asking if he would give up his phone and car, the environmental lawyer became visibly irate before grabbing the microphone and accusing her of ´destroying democracy´ as a member of the press. The interview in New York yesterday afternoon started with a conversation about the number of flyers produced for the event, which Kennedy Jr claimed was necessary to garner ´people power´.

Note: Read the Hillary Clinton-Saul Alinsky Letters here. Previously unpublished correspondence between Hillary Clinton and the late left-wing organizer Saul Alinsky reveal new details about her relationship with the controversial Chicago activist and shed light on her early ideological development. Clinton met with Alinsky several times in 1968 while writing a Wellesley college thesis about his theory of community organizing. Clinton’s relationship with Alinsky, and her support for his philosophy, continued for several years after she entered Yale law school in 1969, two letters obtained by the Washington Free Beacon show. I know a lot of people are giddy at the prospect of Republicans taking the Senate this November, but that’s becoming less and less likely. It’s not because Democrats are rallying around a particular mission or set of candidates; it’s because Republicans and conservatives aren’t. It seems like I’m always writing on issues no one wants to hear are mistakes, such as messaging or social issues. But I don’t care. These things have to be said. If these columns are received like a gaseous cousin on a long car trip through the desert, so be it. Crack a window… If things continue on their current course, the GOP will not retake the Senate.

It was once said, “religion is designed to comfort the afflicted and to afflict the comfortable.” Jesus’ parables – short stories with moral lessons – were likewise designed to afflict, to draw us in but leave us uncomfortable. These teachings can be read as being about divine love and salvation, sure. But, their first listeners – first century Jews in Galilee and Judea – heard much more challenging messages. Only when we hear the parables as Jesus’ own audience did can we fully experience their power and find ourselves surprised and challenged today. Here are four examples of Jesus’ teachings that everybody gets wrong: 1.

Lois Lerner says she is no Jeffrey Dahmer. The former Internal Revenue Service official referenced the infamous cannibalistic serial killer as she broke her silence for the first time about last year’s IRS scandal. Lerner told the website Politico that she has been the recipient of threats and hate mail, describing how one person called her “the worst person ever in the United States.” “I just thought, ‘Boy, worse than Jeffrey Dahmer?’” Lerner quipped. Lerner, who led the tax-exempt division of the IRS, was forced out of the agency after she found herself at the center of the scandal over the agency’s targeting of conservative groups
