It’s the border, stupid:
Key step to immigration reform

New York Post, by Seth Lipsky

Shortly before Ronald Reagan was sworn in as president, I wrote a column suggesting we call off the inauguration — because the president-elect’s brother, Neil, had just disclosed that their Irish grandfather, Michael, had snuck into America. “He was probably one of the early wetbacks, except that he came in from Canada instead of Mexico,” Neil told The Los Angeles Times. What kind of signal, I asked, would we be sending if we swore in Reagan as president? We’d be saying that no matter how you got in to America, if you could find a wife and raise a family, you could become

It really does not do any good to have an international border, border fences, and a lot of border patrol along the borderline when you have a President who decides contrary to common sense for long-term political reasons that he will give every illegal alien "a shot at the American dream" and essentially allow all comers into the USA, where most disappear into liberal Democrat run sanctuary cities and regions to await the next amnesty.

Reagan has admitted that signing Simpson-Mazzoli was his biggest mistake as POTUS. He was, as the article points out according to Dr. K: "swindled".

Illegals should have no standing - in anything. Not in the courts, not in the welfare offices, not in the schools, not in ability to rent or own property, not in ability to send money back home: nowhere. They should simply not exist, as far as the government is concerned - except to have their biometrics recorded and then summarily deported and banned from ever legally entering the US. "Sanctuary cities" should be cut off from all federal aid - all.

If you can´t enforce the "stick", then at least remove the "carrot". If illegals can´t earn a living, acquire wealth, educate their children, or send money home: many if not most will self-deport. If they go hungry, they will go home. Like celibacy, this will work if actually tried.

A piece this Sunday on Texas Gov. Rick Perry in The Des Moines Register by the paper´s top political reporter, Jennifer Jacobs, caught my eye. (Snip) I am now convinced that what seemed four years ago to be a lame excuse for his troubles—that he had undergone back surgery shortly before entering the presidential contest and was still taking painkillers as he undertook the bid—was more real than perceived. (My wife suffered a herniated disk three months ago, less than two weeks before our only daughter´s wedding; in all our 32 years of marriage, my conversations with her under the

The top Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform panel is objecting to a plan to call the Internal Revenue Service commissioner to testify for a third time in a matter of weeks, calling it “public harassment of an agency head.” Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., sent a letter Monday to Chairman Darrell Issa, R-Calif., objecting to a decision to call Commissioner John Koskinen to testify at a hearing on Wednesday. It would be the third time Koskinen appeared before the panel in the past month, Cummings noted. “Requiring Commissioner Koskinen to testify again this week not only takes him away

When President Obama wraps up his 16-day summer break next month on Martha´s Vineyard, Mass., he will have taken all or part of 141 days of vacation, time split between summers on the island, winters in his native Hawaii and birthday weekends at his Chicago home. Obama has been criticized for taking costly and lengthy vacations, especially compared to the short trips most Americans take. The U.S. Travel Association told Secrets that the average American vacation lasts just 3.7 days. But his 141 days out of Washington are far less than the 378 former President George W. Bush took in

In between fund-raising trips, the American President walked to the podium Monday and promised there would be consequences if the Russian president continued to make vicious mischief in the wake of a horrific mass murder that he almost surely aided and abetted. He scolded the Russian-backed, Russian-trained and Russian-armed separatists, who have been busy “removing bodies from the crash site, oftentimes without the care that we would normally expect from a tragedy like this,” adding: “This is the kind of behavior that has no place in the community of nations.” And he warned that, “If Russia continues to violate Ukraine’s sovereignty .

California Senator Barbara Feinstein has demanded that Vladimir Putin “man up” and admit that pro-Russian separatists downed MH17, mistaking it for a Ukrainian transport plane. That this is true is obvious to all except Putin’s propaganda machine that is frantically churning out absurd conspiracy theories, while Putin lies low and limits himself to vague claims of Ukrainian guilt. Feinstein may not understand that Putin’s “manning up” could spell the end of his regime and he can’t admit the truth. Instead, Putin will ramp up his appeals for peace (with the very thugs who shot down MH17, it is now clear), pledge

Maggie Haberman of Politico confirms first that Hillary Clinton is entirely inaccessible to the media and second that none of those denied access thought it important to let the public know Clinton is hiding from questions. Haberman observed, “What has been really striking about Hillary Clinton’s book tour is she has not taken a single question, that I know of from reporters who are attending.” Well, who can blame Clinton from hiding, I suppose, given her declining popularity, the gaffe-filled book tour and the instability engulfing Europe and the Middle East. A wealthy venture capitalist and major Obama donor is fighting tooth-and-nail to prevent others from accessing his private Northern California beach, according to Bloomberg News. Vinod Khosla’s support for Obama has paid off in the form of millions in taxpayer subsidies for green energy companies in which he has invested. A prominent environmentalist, Khosla nevertheless cherishes his control over a private beach alongside his 56-acre property near San Francisco—which he bought for $32.5 million—Bloomberg reported on Monday. Khosla, who started his own venture capital firm a decade ago, is fighting a lawsuit brought in state court by the nonprofit Surfrider Foundation, which describes

If you think President Obama’s administration has unraveled, the denouement could be just beginning. Its real consequence would come when congressional Democrats, who have remained extremely loyal to the president, begin to split from him. If they do — and November election losses could drive that — America could see a presidency come apart. The latest nationwide Quinnipiac poll shows Mr. Obama’s deepening trouble. A plurality of respondents (45 percent) said the country would have been better off if Mitt Romney had won in 2012, and Mr. Obama rated first (33 percent) in voting for America’s worst post-World War II

After finding 20 rockets in a United Nations school last week, a U.N. agency did the only sensible thing it could think of: return them to "local authorities." It all started last week when the missiles were found in a vacant school belonging to U.N.R.W.A. (The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees). Shocked, appalled, and horrified, the group, which runs more than 200 schools in the Gaza Strip, issued this condemnation: UNRWA strongly condemns the group or groups responsible for placing the weapons in one of its installations. This is a flagrant violation of the inviolability of its premises

Long federal courthouse in Baton Rouge, where a portrait of Russell’s dad Huey—the Kingfish himself—kept watch over the lobby. At the building’s ribbon-cutting several years earlier, Edwards, who was then in the last of his four nonconsecutive terms as emperor/governor of Louisiana (and who is now running for Congress), had joked that the ceremony was “my first invitation to a federal courthouse not delivered by U.S. marshals.” Like all his best lines—and Edwards always had

Heaven forfend! El-Sisi undoubtedly knows better, as do numerous relatively more silent types like the Saudis and the Jordanians, all — or anyway most

Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy wasn’t out to make news when he addressed the annual conference of the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and devoted most of his 50-minute speech to the Magna Carta, which turns 800 years old in 2015. But Kennedy did let on that he doesn’t belong to the school of Constitution-worshipers who base their legal doctrines on what they glean to be the original, literal meaning of every word and phrase in the nation’s founding document.

Convinced that their region has suffered as much Obama administration meddling as it can possibly stand, Israel and Egypt took the extraordinary step earlier this week of jointly rejecting requests by US Secretary of State John Kerry to involve himself in ceasefire talks with the terrorist group Hamas. Israeli and Egyptian diplomats both claim Egyptian efforts to mediate a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas collapsed as a direct result of Secretary Kerry’s announcement he was prepared to join the talks. He apparently made the announcement without first consulting either of the parties. The diplomats are convinced that their own

A pernicious, little-known Obama administration policy – one that that incentivizes adult illegal immigrants to use children as human shields to escape arrest and deportation at the border – largely has escaped the media’s notice. This same policy is driving the historic surge of children at the border, as everyone from coyotes to illegal immigrant adults already in America seeks to use children to guarantee their safe passage into the country, or to protect them from deportation if they are illegally living here. The flood of illegal immigrant children, piling up like human debris on the US border, won’t stop

WASHINGTON —Polarization and partisanship are a plague on American politics. Political scientists have found that the two parties have each grown more ideologically homogeneous since the 1970s. The Senate hasn’t been so polarized since Reconstruction; the House has not been so divided since around 1900. As measured by laws passed, the current Congress is on track to be among the least productive in our republic’s history. How did this happen? One of the main causes has not gotten enough attention: the party primary system. The reasons behind the shocking primary defeat last month of Representative Eric Cantor of Virginia, who
