Most states remain at a loss for jobs
Associated Press, by Paul Wiseman

WASHINGTON– Five years after the Great Recession officially ended, most states still haven’t regained all the jobs they lost, even though the nation as a whole has. In May, the overall economy finally recovered all 9 million jobs that vanished in the worst downturn since the 1930s. Another month of solid hiring is expected in the U.S. jobs report for June that will be released today. Yet 32 states still have fewer jobs than when the recession began in December 2007 – evidence of the unevenness and persistently slow pace of the recovery. Even though economists declared the recession over

Most states remain at a loss for jobs because the great recession is still going on. Economists, if they would use one brain cell, should get off Barry´s payroll.

A Canadian jihadist fighting for ISIS in Syria has uploaded photographs of U.S. military kit the brutal Islamist group has seized from fleeing government soldiers in Iraq. Posting on Twitter using the name Abu Turaab al-Kanadi, the militant shared images of everything from Humvee vehicles to M16 rifles and night vision goggles - much of which is marked as being for restricted use by the U.S. government. Al-Kanadi, who is often referred to as simply ´The Canadian´, is believed to be based in Raqqa - the Syrian city considered the capital of ISIS´ self-declared caliphate. Scroll down for video

Today is the press launch of the fifth season of ITV´s hit drama series Downton Abbey – even as I type, the actors and execs are doing a Q&A with journalists. But the first episode of this new season has just been screened to the press for the first time, and these are my thoughts. This was as strong a season opener as we’ve seen since that very first season four years ago. And this time, writer Julian Fellowes didn’t have the sinking of the Titanic to help him on his narrative way. Indeed Downton Abbey is finally – inasmuch

FERGUSON, Mo.— Police on Thursday defended the use of tear gas and smoke bombs to repel protesters after another night of chaos in a St. Louis suburb following the shooting of unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown. St. Louis County police spokesman Brian Schellman said officers on Wednesday night tossed tear gas to disperse a large crowd of protesters after some threw Molotov cocktails and rocks at officers. More than 10 people were arrested in Ferguson. "In talking to these guys, it is scary," Schellman said of officers on the front lines of the protest. "They hear gunshots going off, and they

Matthew Colbert, a former campaign and Hill staffer, has launched a new app to help you put your money where your beliefs are. Before you buy a product, you can scan the bar code with the BuyPartisan app to “see the political donations of the CEO, Board of Directors and employees of the company you are buying from.” The app is free. Colbert told the Washington Post the main goal is to make “every day Election Day” through “spending choices.” Here is a sample screen shot of a barcode scan for Neutrogena face wash, which supports the GOP over Democrats

The former Secretary of State and rumored presidential candidate attracted a large crowd to a book signing event Wednesday at Bunch of Grapes. It was rainy and grey outside, but the mood was bright inside the Bunch of Grapes Bookstore in Vineyard Haven Wednesday where Hillary Clinton fans were positively beaming. Ms. Clinton was in town to sign copies of her new book, “Hard Choices.” “We love you,” “Please run, we need you,” “I’m such a fan of yours,” and variations of the same were heard again and again from people who had waited in line, some for four hours,

A new report suggested that liberal billionaire Tom Steyer’s hedge fund profited from a $1 billion San Francisco light rail project pushed by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. Steyer was also a big supporter of Pelosi. Despite being quick to criticize conservative political donors, the morning and evening news shows on ABC, CBS and NBC have all ignored the allegation since the Washington Free Beacon broke the story Aug. 12. According to Washington Free Beacon, Pelosi “steered more than a billion dollars in federal financing” to a transportation project to provide light rail access to the Mission Bay neighborhood

To hear the White House tell it, not all “boots on the ground” are created equal. The White House on Wednesday acknowledged that ground troops could be used in a humanitarian mission in Iraq to help Yazidi refugees surrounded by militants. Considering that President Obama had repeatedly pledged to avoid an extended ground campaign in Iraq, some accused the president of flip-flopping on the issue. But Obama has made a critical distinction on ground troops, the White House said in defending the possible action Wednesday. “What he’s ruled out is reintroducing U.S. forces into combat on the ground in Iraq,”

It’s official: Obamaism is dead. Hillary Clinton killed it. It wasn’t so much a mercy killing as an expedient one, but that’s politics in the best sense. The important thing is that she broke the Democratic omertà code by stating the obvious: The president’s policy of having America sit on the sidelines of a burning world is a disaster that threatens our national security. The power of her argument is confirmed by a report that a testy Obama called it “horses–t” to congressional leaders. The brassiness, dishonesty and shamelessness as she slides into yet another presidential campaign season is enough to choke that old Arkansas draft mule of a husband she hitched her career to. The scheming calculation of it all would make Lady Macbeth take to the bed for blushing. How on earth did such a crafty street fighter get so completely trounced by such a naive rookie like Barack Obama in 2008? That Mrs. Clinton would up and disavow President Obama’s policy of ceding the entire world to evil forces — a policy she embraced and enforced for four years as his top

Going by the numbers, Apple fits into a stereotype of many tech companies in Silicon Valley: its workforce is overwhelmingly white and male. Overall, 70 percent of Apple employees are men as opposed to 30 percent women, and 55 percent are white, according to statistics provided by Apple. In addition, 15 percent of its overall workforce is Asian, 11 percent is Hispanic, and 7 percent is Black. She doesn’t name names there, but she’s been known to diverge from grassroots conservatives in these matters before. What would happen, though, if Boehner turned around and made a deal with Harry Reid on amnesty in September? One of the goals of Obama’s looming power grab over legalization is to scare Republican leaders with the thought that Latino voters will be so grateful, they’ll break even harder for Democrats in 2016. SWAT teams and angry protesters clashed in a small St. Louis suburb for a third day Tuesday, following the death of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown. The eruption of protests and violence has been a long time coming. While I certainly do not condone rioting, examining the conditions surrounding Brown’s death — and the deaths of several other unarmed black men killed by law enforcement recently — makes clear that community reactions like those in Ferguson, Mo., are bound to happen. America has continued to isolate poor black people in economically depressed neighborhoods under increasingly oppressive police tactics that breed

Washington - Defense Department officials said late Wednesday that United States airstrikes and Kurdish fighters had broken the Islamic militants’ siege of Mount Sinjar, allowing thousands of the Yazidis trapped there to escape. California lawmakers are poised to enact a regulation requiring every college and university that receives public funding to define consensual sex in a way that attempts to micro-manage everyone’s sexual affairs. The first-in-the-nation legislation already passed California’s state Senate by a vote of 27-4 in May, The Associated Press reports. If the bill passes the assembly this month, it will then go to the desk of Gov. Jerry Brown. The bill, which is based on guidance from the Obama administration, requires an “affirmative consent standard” that school administrators would use to determine whether a sexual assault has occurred.
