Japan allows its military to
help defend U.S., other allies

Los Angeles Times, by Yuriko Nagano

Japan on Tuesday announced a reinterpretation of its pacifist post-World War II Constitution that allows the country´s military to help defend the United States and other allies. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the decision by the Cabinet to adjust the interpretation from one that limited the armed forces to defending Japan was necessary because of regional changes. The decision allows Japan´s forces to help protect U.S. ships that may come under attack in nearby waters, Abe said. "This will be a deterrent," he said during a news conference. "The basic thinking on how the constitution is presently interpreted will not change

Be very afraid China! Knowing Japan, they´ll develop and implement a state of the art weapon system to defend their country and their allies.
One example could be to addict Chinese soldiers to a beautiful female android and have them commit treason or sabotage. So diabolical!

In today’s Morning Jolt, I asked readers for any long-forgotten references to National Review in popular culture. The other day in the office, other NRO-niks and I tried to come up with all the movies and television shows that have referenced or mentioned National Review Annie Hall, obviously; spider-killing is proud tradition at NR. Tom Selleck picked up a copy of National Review in an episode of Magnum, P.I. Robin Williams’s Genie briefly imitated William F. Buckley in Aladdin. NBC’s Community offered a bizarre reference, although perhaps the magazine needs a “Make-Out Meter.” Readers already offered three we missed.

Netanyahu says Hamas

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Hamas is already violating its own cease-fire that it proposed Sunday morning. “Hamas doesn’t even accept it’s own cease-fire. It’s continuing to fire at us as we speak," he said Sunday on CNN´s "State of the Union." Hamas announced a 24-hour cease-fire with Israel beginning at 2 p.m. local time. But Netanyahu said that Hamas hadn´t abided by its own announcement, saying it has not ceased in its campaign against the Israel on Sunday. “Hamas is simply continuing all its operations, and Israel will not let this terror operation decide when it’s convenient for them and not

State Sen. Wendy Davis is making a huge mistake in her campaign as the Democratic nominee for Texas governor. And if she continues doing it, she just might find her potential voters staying home in droves on Election Day. The campaign apparently has decided that Davis has to distance herself from President Barack Obama — avoid being seen with him, resist talking about the issues he has championed even if she supports them, and certainly not ask the president’s help in getting out the vote in the Lone Star State. The obvious reason for this flawed strategy is that Obama is hugely unpopular in the so-called “red”

As my colleagues and I frequently note, Americans have a well-established constitutional right to record police officers as they publicly perform their duties. Yet cops across the country continue to harass and arrest people for exercising that right, using bogus charges such as wiretapping, resisting arrest, and interfering with police. Yesterday yet another federal judge issued a clear message to those cops: Cut it out. The case was brought by Antonio Buehler, an Austin, Texas, activist who has had several run-ins with camera-shy cops. The first incident occurred on January 1, 2012, when Buehler pulled into a 7-11 in Austin

There has been some fanfare this week over the 45th anniversary of Apollo 11. If the celebration has made you despair at the listless state of today’s space program, you may be comforted by another astronomical date, a sort of pre-anniversary: One year from now, for the first time in human history, a probe will reach Pluto. The probe is a compact-car-sized NASA spaceship called New Horizons. It left Earth in 2006. Pluto’s a long way away. Pluto used to be our smallest, remotest planet, the ninth planet from the sun. In 2006, the International Astronomical Union redesignated Pluto as a

Former players hoping to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame will face a more rigorous standard after Major League Baseball reduced the number of years that a player is eligible to be voted in. The Hall of Fame announced the change moments ago, just ahead of this weekend´s inductions, meaning that the 15-year window for a player to selected by a consortium of baseball writers has been winnowed down to 10. There will be a few exceptions: The BBWAA will allow three players — Don Mattingly, Lee Smith and Alan Trammell — who have been on the ballot between 10-15

As casualties mount and calls ?for a cease-fire grow, the war ?in Gaza is probably close to ?quitting time. But nobody should be foolish enough to think that silencing the guns will mean a return to the pre-war status quo. For Israel, a business-as-usual approach is no longer possible. The barrage of Hamas rockets cannot be tolerated again because the weapons’ increased range puts the entire population in harm’s way. But something else also happened in the last two weeks, and the shock waves are just starting to roll through Israeli society. The discovery of Hamas’ vast tunnel system, which would have

President Obama insists on flirting with impeachment even as House Republican leaders insist there’s no such possibility. Obama uses a passive-aggressive strategy that can be judged as a political maneuver, a personality disorder, or both. Secure in the knowledge that impeachment is not the same as removal from office, Mr. Obama brings up the topic on his own and with bold defiance. Martyrdom goes well with a Messiah complex and Mr. Obama’s speeches are a non-stop litany of depicting himself as a victim of Republicans. Already operating beyond the constitutional bounds of presidential power, Mr. Obama’s strategy is to push the bounds

President Obama appears poised to take executive action that would legalize as many as 5 million illegal immigrant parents of U.S.-born children, a prospect that riles local immigration critics and adds a new dimension to concern about swelling immigrant populations in states like Massachusetts eyed as hosting sites for thousands of children who crossed the border unaccompanied. The Associated Press reported yesterday White House officials are laying the groundwork for an executive order that would automatically legalize roughly 5 million of an estimated 11 million people who have entered the country without legal authorization or overstayed their visas.

The IDF has not yet located and destroyed all of Hamas´ terror tunnels, but the consensus about the intent behind them is quite clear. This is Jonathan Dahoah HeLevi of the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs. Ismail Haniyeh, the Hamas prime minister, delivered a revealing speech on March 23, 2014, in which he stressed the strategic importance of the Hamas attack tunnels, which, he argued, have changed the balance of power with Israel, when taken together with his organization’s military build-up. In the meantime, the IDF’s war against the tunnels continues. On Monday IDF forces thwarted another terror attack after two groups of Hamas

Even as President Obama grapples with the crisis of immigrant children arriving at the Southwest border, White House officials are laying the groundwork for a large-scale expansion of immigrant rights that would come by executive action within weeks. Officials signaled strongly Friday that Obama´s move would shield from deportation large numbers of immigrants living in the country illegally, as advocacy groups have demanded. Roughly 5 million of the estimated 11 million people who entered the country without legal authorization or overstayed their visas could be protected under a leading option the White House is considering, according to officials who discussed

Rep. Appearing on Breitbart News Saturday with co-hosts Breitbart News Executive Chairman Stephen K. When The Times of Israel’s Avi Issacharoff first reported the content of John Kerry’s ceasefire proposal on Friday afternoon, I wondered if something had gotten lost in translation. It seemed inconceivable that the American secretary of state would have drafted an initiative that, as a priority, did not require the dismantling of Hamas’s rocket arsenal and network of tunnels dug under the Israeli border. Yet the reported text did not address these issues at all, nor call for the demilitarization of Gaza. It seemed inconceivable that the secretary’s initiative would specify the need to address Hamas’s demands for a lifting of
