For the Fourth, 5 Songs You

What music comes to mind when you think of America and Independence Day? “The Battle Hymn of the Republic?” A John Phillip Souza march? Glenn Miller or the Andrews Sisters? Outside of country, there isn’t much music being made about America anymore. Oh, pop music is still filled with references. America’s favorite problem child, Miley Cyrus, turns up in nearly every 4th of July playlist with “Party In The U.S.A.” and Katy Perry’s “Firework” has also become an Independence Day party anthem. But Cyrus’ song mentions nothing American, except the “fame excess” of Hollywood. “Firework” just uses the 4th of

4 of the 5 songs listed contradict the headline and premise of the article.

LOL - love the comment made after article: "Springsteen always "sings" like he´s trying to pass a grapefruit."

The “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” celebrates an Enemy who not only was victorious but cruel and arrogant.

I first saw Yankee Doodle Dandy when it originally came out in 1942. Now, every time the movie shows up I make a point to see it again. It was a very patriotic movie at a time when we needed it during WW II. Yankee Doodle Dandy was born on the 4th of July. But I will always stand and cherish the song about our flag.

You´re a grand old flag,
You´re a high flying flag
And forever in peace may you wave.
You´re the emblem of
The land I love.
The home of the free and the brave.
Ev´ry heart beats true
´neath the Red, White and Blue,
Where there´s never a boast or brag.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
Keep your eye on the grand old flag.

No one can sing God Bless America better than Kate Smith.

Ok I had two tours with the 16th Inf. of the 1st Div. And I do not have too great a beef with Creedence Clearwater Revival’s ‘Fortunate Son’ because there were a great number of So called Americans that pushed off their duty on others. But there were a lot of “Fortunate sons” that did their duty. In ’66 I had a 133 lb banker’s son that toted a 22lb machine gun and his other gear through the bush without a complaint. No weapon of that era had more “things’ on it to catch on vines etc. He is just one example of many that I saw in my tow tours.

Uh huh. Before the article loaded I knew Springsteen´s "Born in the USA" and Mellencamp´s "Pink Houses" (which Reagan also complimented--he hadn´t heard anything but the refrain) were probably on the list. Mellencamp´s song was probably a rewrite of Pete Seeger´s early-´Sixties hit "Little Boxes." Springsteen and Mellencamp are musicians whose in your face political stances are too raw for their music to be enjoyed. They can stick it in their diddy bags where the sun refuses to shine.

Woody Guthrie wrote "This Land is Your Land" as a sarcastic working-man´s response to "God Bless America." Little did he know that it would evolve into a song that is considered patriotic by pretty much everybody.

Chuck Berry wrote some tasty patriotic lyrics:

Oh well, oh well, I feel so good today
We just touched ground on an international runway
Jet propelled back home, from over seas to the U.S.A.

New York, Los Angeles, oh how I yearned for you
Detroit, Chicago, Chattanooga, Baton Rouge
Let alone just to be at my home back in old St. Lou

Did I miss the skyscrapers, did I miss the long freeway?
From the coast of California to the shores of The Delaware Bay
You can bet your life I did, till I got back in the U.S.A.

Looking hard for a drive-in, searching for a corner cafe
Where hamburgers sizzle on an open grill night and day
Yeah, and a jukebox jumping the records like in the U.S.A.

Well, I´m so glad I´m livin´ in the U.S.A.
Yes I´m so glad I´m livin´ in the U.S.A.
Anything you want, we got it right here in the U.S.A.

God bless America!

I´m so glad I´m livin´ in the U.S.A.
Yes I´m so glad I´m livin´ in the U.S.A.

Back in the late-60´s, I always got a kick out of the hippie scum (predecessors of today´s Occupy weenies) who loved the Beatles´ "Revolution," assuming by the title that it advanced their cause. Lennon was ridiculing them, they were just too stoned or stupid to realize it.

Texas GOP Gov. Rick Perry responded Saturday to the weekend indictment in which he is accused of abusing his power of office, calling it a political “farce” and vowing to explore “every legal avenue” to combat the prosecution. Perry, a 2012 GOP presidential candidate with potential 2016 aspirations, was indicted Friday for allegedly abusing his power by vowing to veto $7.5 million in state funds for agency run by Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg, after she pleaded guilty to drunken driving in April 2013 and refused to resign. Perry vetoed the money after Lehmberg, a Democrat, videotaped acting erratically

President Obama is vacationing again in Marta Vineyard - playground of the 1% of the 1%. We have been assured that he is just as in charge there as he is in Washington, which is not very reassuring. He purportedly brought his brain trust with him for advice. That is not very reassuring either since that very limited group includes deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes (for his C.V. see this ). The media is also reporting that Anita Breckenbridge is his “top-ranking advisor” on the island with him - while the world “blows up” in Defense Secretary Hagel words.

Jeff Bell was a reform conservative before it was cool. He’s spent his career arguing with a risk-averse Republican establishment. He pushed Ronald Reagan to embrace the supply-side doctrine of tax cuts before deficit reduction. He spent the 1990s warning the GOP that its tax policy favored investment capital over human capital, corporate interests over working families. He designed a family-friendly flat tax that reduced payroll taxes, increased the child tax credit, taxed capital gains and regular income at the same rate, and ended business expensing. Payroll tax relief and a generous child tax credit are elements of today’s reform

Grand jurors charged Perry, 63, with abuse of official capacity, a first-degree felony, and coercion of a public official. Perry wanted Lehmberg to resign because she had been busted for drunk driving. A grand jury in Travis County, Texas, indicted Governor Rick Perry today. Why? For exercising his constitutional prerogative by threatening to veto, and then vetoing, an appropriation to support the public corruption unit in Travis County’s district attorney’s office. This followed the arrest of the county’s district attorney, Democratic Party activist Rosemary Lehmberg, for drunk driving, after she was found “with an open bottle of vodka in the front passenger seat of her car in a church parking lot in Austin.” Ms. Lehmberg served 45 days in jail. The Travis County district attorney’s office has long been a cesspool of corruption.

The scandal that erupted Friday night involved millions of dollars, statehouse power plays—oh yeah, and alcohol, police, and masks. Texas Governor Rick Perry was indicted Friday on charges of abuse of power—a first degree felony—and coercion—a third degree felony. The charges stem from a 2013 scandal that has been quietly rumbling in the Lone Star State as Perry has been floated as a viable contender for the Republican nomination in 2016. This is a complex case, which might be why it has not made national headlines the way other recent, state-level scandals (like Bridgegate, in New Jersey) have. Below, I have outlined
