U.S. Nuke Sites Dismantled Security
to Save Money, Report Warns

Washington Free Beacon, by Adam Kredo

The organization responsible for securing America’s highly sensitive nuclear sites has been suffering from a “chaotic” and “dysfunctional” security policy that has endangered the country’s nuclear sites and left them vulnerable to attack, according to a new report by the government’s watchdog group. The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), which is tasked with managing the nation’s nuclear stockpile and securing classified research sites, has “increased risks and reduced security” over the past several years in a bid to reduce overhead costs, according to a new Government Accountability Office (GAO) report. Security vulnerabilities at these NNSA sites still persist two years after a

Moments of clarity often come when you least expect them. In a speech to contributors last week in Seattle, Barack Obama made the case that his presidency has made America better. In most respects, it was precisely the kind of political pablum you’d expect from a president who seems more concerned with legacy-polishing than governing. He ticked off his accomplishments, a list that was equal parts premature celebration (deficit reduction), hyperbole (Obamacare), and borrowed glory (rising college attendance, a strong stock market, increased energy production). Even if few in this fawning crowd were going to question him, circumstances required the president

CNN’s Diana Magnay is latest reminder that
Twitter can be a journalist’s worst enemy

Among its many virtues and drawbacks, social media may be one of the most effective tools ever invented to assist journalists in harming their careers. Since the advent of Twitter, Facebook and other instantaneous digital platforms, reporters have lost their jobs, been suspended or been reassigned after posting things deemed inappropriate by readers, viewers and — most important — their bosses. The objectionable posts have usually called into question the journalists’ ability to remain neutral and fair to both sides of any story. The latest casualty: CNN correspondent Diana Magnay, who last week stirred criticism for a tweet about a group of

One third of Americans think President Barack Obama should be impeached, a new poll says. According to a CNN/ORC International poll released Friday, 33 percent of Americans think the president should be impeached and removed from office, compared with 65 percent who say they don’t support impeachment. Fifty-seven percent of Republicans say they support impeaching Obama, compared with just 35 percent of independent voters and 13 percent of Democrats. When asked about when Congress should attempt to impeach a president, 79 percent of Americans said it should only be used if there is evidence of a serious crime — such as

Obama´s immigration flip flop

President Barack Obama insisted for years that he had absolutely no legal authority — none whatsoever, zero, zilch — to slow deportations on a broad scale. Forget everything he’s said. Obama’s pledge to use his executive powers by the end of the summer marked both a dramatic reversal in rhetoric and a major strategic shift on immigration. The president is no longer emphasizing his own powerlessness but rather his determination “to fix as much of our immigration system as I can on my own, without Congress.”

Three American citizens, including The Washington Post’s correspondent in Iran, appear to have been detained this week in Tehran, U.S. officials and the newspaper said Thursday. Washington Post foreign editor Douglas Jehl said the newspaper has received “credible reports” that correspondent Jason Rezaian and his wife, Yeganeh Salehi, were detained Tuesday evening in Tehran. It is unclear who detained them or why. “We are deeply troubled by this news and are concerned for the welfare of Jason, Yeganeh and two others said to have been detained with them,” Jehl said in a statement.

Unions Ending Forced-Dues Collection

The Supreme Court ruling that freed home healthcare workers from coercive unionization in Illinois has led to unions ceasing automatic deduction of union dues from non-members in other states. A Washington state chapter of the politically powerful SEIU announced that it would no longer force caretakers—many of whom are caring for disabled family members—to pay union dues, according to communications obtained by the Freedom Foundation, a free market think tank. Adam Glickman, secretary treasurer of SEIU Local 775, wrote a letter to an unnamed home healthcare worker saying the court’s decision in Harris v. Quinn called into question Washington’s policy toward automatic

IRS experts: Lois Lerner hard drive was

Top IRS officials told congressional investigators that Lois Lerner´s hard drive -- the one containing emails that could shed light on the IRS targeting scandal -- was irreparably damaged before it was destroyed completely in 2011. But now, investigators have had a chance to talk to the technical experts inside the IRS who actually examined Lerner´s computer, and the experts say the hard drive in question was actually just "scratched," and that most of the data on it was recoverable. The IRS computer experts also told the committee that they had recommended seeking outside help in recovering the data from Lerner´s

Here was Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) on CNN Sunday morning, talking about the missile that took down a Malaysia Airlines 777, a single act that was the same as 298 homicides. Feinstein was talking about Vladimir Putin, the Russian president who set this all in motion with his disestablishment of Ukraine, a nation that no longer belongs to Russia even though Putin seems to believe it should. “I would say, Putin, you have to man up,” Feinstein said. “You should talk to the world. You should say this was a mistake, if it was a mistake.” Feinstein’s sentiment was right.

Part of the anti-Israel war effort includes attempts to demoralize Israel and its supporters. That is why Hamas, Hezbollah and others try so hard to kidnap Israeli civilians or soldiers, and even to grab dead bodies. That psychological warfare is on full display in the media and social media. But it’s not working because Israelis know that Hamas and other Islamic terrorist groups in Gaza, who fire from among civilians towards civilians, leave Israel with no choice but to fight in a war it didn’t want but in which so much is at stake. Texas Governor Rick Perry went on Hannity tonight to discuss the illegal immigrant crisis at the US southern border. Perry shared these shocking numbers on the current crisis. “Sean, there have been over the course of the last five years, since the fall of ’08, over 203,000 individuals who have come into Texas illegally who have been booked into our county jails. Those individuals have accounted for over 3,000 homicides and over 8,000 sexual assaults. We can’t afford to wait for Washington to secure this border. We’ve had enough.”

President Obama told Democratic donors Wednesday night that most Americans don’t have time to think about the details of the Benghazi terrorist attack or the problems with Obamacare. Speaking at a fundraiser at the Los Angeles home of “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal” creator Shonda Rhimes, the president took his usual shots at the Republican Party, suggesting its members are focused on the wrong issues and frequently “obfuscate and they bamboozle and sometimes don’t say what’s true.” And because people are not familiar with the intricacies of many public-policy issues, Republicans can get away with such obfuscation, he said. “The Republican

I received a call from my sons’ school in March telling me that my oldest needed to be picked up early. He had been given a one-day suspension because he had thrown a chair. He did not hit anyone, but he could have, the school officials told me. JJ was 4 at the time. I agreed his behavior was inappropriate, but I was shocked that it resulted in a suspension. For weeks, it seemed as if JJ was on the chopping block. He was suspended two more times, once for throwing another chair and then for spitting on a student

High-ranking U.S. officials said Wednesday that not only are Sunni radicals with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant “worse than al Qaeda,” but that the group has a message for the president: “We’re coming for you, Barack Obama.” Brett McGurk, the deputy assistant secretary of state, told lawmakers at a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing that ISIL may have “changed its name,” but that it’s still al Qaeda. (Snip) Elissa Slotkin, the acting principal deputy undersecretary of Defense for policy, added that ISIL also has its eye on the president, threatening “We’re coming for you, Barack Obama,” The Hill reported.

A year after news of the Monica Lewinsky scandal broke, former First Lady Hillary Clinton allegedly told a Pulitzer-prize winning journalist that it was former President Bill Clinton’s abusive mother that caused his unfaithfulness and sex addiction, a new book claims. That journalist was Lucinda Franks and while her latest book, “Timeless: Love, Morgenthau, and Me,” doesn’t have much to do about the Clintons, the part that does offers never before reported information from a 1999 interview with the former First Lady. The New York Daily News obtained parts of the book a month before its scheduled August 2014 release.

Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), the Republican Party’s bookish former vice presidential nominee, is starting to look like a candidate for the presidency in 2016. On Tuesday, the Federal Election Commission approved of a nationwide book tour sponsored by Ryan’s publisher and the Political Action Committee the Wisconsin congressman founded, Prosperity Action PAC. “The book will address “the state of the conservative movement in America today, discuss how it contrasts with liberal progressivism, and explain what must be done to save what Representative Ryan refers to as the

Colchester – Experts estimate there are nearly 300 adult loons living on Vermont´s lakes and ponds, up from just a couple dozen 30 years ago. On Saturday, more than 200 volunteers spread out across Vermont for the annual loon survey. The results of the survey are trickling in, but Eric Hanson of the Vermont Center for Ecostudies and the coordinator of the Vermont Loon Conservation Project, said there are many more birds now than just a few years ago. He said 15 years ago there were around 100 loons. In 1983, biologists counted only 29. "It is a decent, stable population. I'm hoping that actually things do start to level out.

The chairman of the Federal Election Commission today blasted Democratic colleagues opposed to his effort to protect conservative media after they imposed rules on the publisher of Rep. Paul Ryan´s new book, opening the door to future book regulations -- or even a ban. "By failing to affirm this publisher’s constitutional right, statutory right, to disseminate a political book free from FEC conditions and regulations, we have effectively asserted regulatory jurisdiction over a book publisher,” warned Chairman Lee E. Goodman, one of three Republicans on the six-person FEC.

ST. LOUIS – The nation´s third botched execution in six months offers more evidence for the courts that lethal injection carries too many risks and amounts to cruel and unusual punishment, death-row lawyers and other opponents said Thursday. Death-penalty opponents say the execution of an Arizona inmate who took two hours to die shows that state experiments with different drugs and dosages are a callous trial-and-error process. The result: Every few months, an inmate gasps, chokes and takes an unusually long time to die.
