I received a call from my sons’ school in March telling me that my oldest needed to be picked up early. He had been given a one-day suspension because he had thrown a chair. He did not hit anyone, but he could have, the school officials told me. JJ was 4 at the time. I agreed his behavior was inappropriate, but I was shocked that it resulted in a suspension. For weeks, it seemed as if JJ was on the chopping block. He was suspended two more times, once for throwing another chair and then for spitting on a student

Some Republicans push compassionate,

The last time Republicans began running for president, there was a race to be the most confrontational, the most unbending. Mitt Romney said he was “severely conservative” and mocked the “47 percent.” Rick Perry called the Federal Reserve “treasonous.” Rick Santorum said he was “for income inequality.” What a difference a disastrous election, two years and terrible polling make. If 2012 was a contest to be the toughest, the 2016 presidential Republican primary is likely to include a competition to appear the most compassionate. The rebranding effort is taking center stage this week with pleas for more compassion from four

President Obama will attend the United Nations climate summit in New York in September, a move that would put a stamp on his administration´s agenda ahead of pivotal international negotiations next year in Paris. A White House aide confirmed Obama´s planned attendance in an email to the Washington Examiner. The news was first reported by Responding to Climate Change, which also noted Chinese President Xi Jinping is slated to appear. Obama has fewer miles to travel than his Chinese counterpart, but his presence is just as symbolic. He´ll be backing proposed Environmental Protection Agency rules on emissions from both new

The House Rules Committee approved a resolution Thursday that would authorize Congress to sue President Obama over how he implemented parts of Obamacare. Its 7-4 vote along party lines forwards the resolution to the GOP-run chamber, where it is expected to pass. Committee Chairman Pete Sessions, Texas Republican, said the lawsuit is necessary because Mr. Obama failed “to faithfully execute the law” and is therefore encroaching on Congress‘ power to write laws. Without redress, he added, future presidents will have “free rein” to ignore the wishes of the legislative branch. “Laws are not a mere list of suggestions from which

"No," Gov. Rick Perry said he has not heard from President Obama, since Obama met with him two weeks ago during a fundraising trip to Texas. At that meeting, Perry urged the president to deploy National Guard troops to the border; he asked for border patrol agents stationed inland to be moved closer to the border; and he asked for approval to use drone surveillance. Perry on Wednesday described the influx of illegal aliens into the Rio Grande Valley as a "full-blown" crisis that puts Texas citizens "in jeopardy." Since the fall of 2008, more than 203,000 illegal aliens have

President Barack Obama will call Thursday for an end to a corporate loophole that allows companies to avoid federal taxes by shifting their tax domiciles overseas in deals known as "inversions," White House officials said. So-called inversion deals occur when a U.S. company acquires or sets up a foreign company, then moves its U.S. tax domicile to the foreign company and its lower-tax home country. Nine inversion deals have been agreed to this year by companies ranging from banana distributor Chiquita Brands International Inc to drugmaker AbbVie Inc and more are under consideration. The transactions are setting a record pace

Those individuals have accounted for over 3,000 homicides and over 8,000 sexual assaults. We can’t afford to wait for Washington to secure this border. We’ve had enough.”

President Obama told Democratic donors Wednesday night that most Americans don’t have time to think about the details of the Benghazi terrorist attack or the problems with Obamacare. Speaking at a fundraiser at the Los Angeles home of “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal” creator Shonda Rhimes, the president took his usual shots at the Republican Party, suggesting its members are focused on the wrong issues and frequently “obfuscate and they bamboozle and sometimes don’t say what’s true.” And because people are not familiar with the intricacies of many public-policy issues, Republicans can get away with such obfuscation, he said. “The Republican

In scandal after scandal in the Obama administration, President Obama has said he didn’t know about the problems until he heard it on the news. But the president changed his tune about his supposed ignorance at a Democratic fundraiser near Seattle on Tuesday night. Mr. Obama told supporters that he doesn’t watch the news because, “Whatever they’re reporting about, usually I know.” That contrasts with the explanations that the president and his aides have given from scandals in the past few years ranging from long wait times and deaths at the VA, to the IRS targeting tea party groups, to the
