The City That Offers Sharia-Compliant
Loans to Muslim Business Owners

National Journal, by Alexia Campbell

Inside the Karmel Square shopping mall in southwest Minneapolis, women wearing headscarves paint customers´ feet with henna. Others sell beaded caftans in narrow stalls. On the first floor, shopkeepers kneel toward Mecca to pray. Somali entrepreneurs in the neighborhood have transformed an abandoned machinery warehouse into this bustling indoor bazaar. Karmel Square is one of several commercial districts they´ve revived in recent years with support from an unexpected ally: the city. Since 2006, Minneapolis has loaned more than $1 million to Muslim business owners through a program that complies with sharia law, which prohibits Muslims from paying or earning interest in a

Well, as for interest, we´re halfway there. We pay interest, we just aren´t earning any.

I could probably start a business too if I could get a no-interest loan and didn´t have to qualify. Where do I go for it?

What a lousy explanation...!
I still don´t get how this works.
I still don´t know how they get mortgages at zero interest.
From what I gather they found a way of paying interest without having to call it interest. Whatever distortion of reality helps this 12 century culture shoehorn itself into the present I guess is allowed...

#4. It´s smoke and mirrors using a middleman who jacks up the resale price. Thus the payment for the time value of the money is hidden in the cost of whatever the business acquired. Example, the business needs chairs for the customers to sit on. The chairs will cost $500 at the wholesaler. The middleman receives the loan from the program, purchases the chairs for $500 and then charges the business $22 dollars a month over two years or approximately $528 for the purchase of the chairs. The interest is thus hidden as part of the purchase price to the end user.

Note that these businesses seem to be all low value added retail and service entities in which the labor is mostly done by women. Somali men seem to be some of the laziest people on the planet. It irked me to no end to visit the Twin Cities and watch the Somalid women, covered from head to toe in the stifling summer heat, carrying the shopping bags and the kid while hubby walked by her side in shorts, tee and flip flops always with empty hands.

Many years ago my ex and I looked at a home in Aquia Harbor, off of 95 outside of DC. At the time Carter was president and interest rates for a VA loan were16%. Needless to say the real estate market was hurting badly. The sellers were offering to finance the sale. The real estate agent informed us that the sellers were Islamic and that because of their religion they could not charge interest. Funny thing, they got around that nasty little issue by using a third party to take care of the financing.

The house was beautiful and spacious. However, the stench hit you when you walked in the door. They had just up and moved onto wherever and left trash and refuse in the garbage disposal, trash cans, bathrooms everywhere. I had never been through a home for sale left in that state. Apparently the real estate agents were so appalled that not one of them took it upon themselves to get the house in saleable condition. Needless to say we left and never looked back.

#10, Similar story here about the condition of a house. Filthy, piles of dirty clothing everywhere, mattresses on the floor with dirty linens, etc.

The realtor was aghast, but babbled on and on about "potential."

We switched realtors.

Old Ironsides sailed through Boston Harbor Friday for the last time until 2018, as the 216-year-old warship prepares to undergo a three-year restoration beginning early next year. The USS Constitution has sailed unassisted by a tug boat only twice since 1881, in 1997 and 2012. This summer it sailed with the help of a tug, but still moved by its own power. Friday was the final unassisted sail until the ship has completed its restoration. Aside from making the usual repairs for wear and tear, the restoration aims to return Old Ironsides to an image of its 1812 self. “She kind of ballooned

Despite lingering questions over his eating habits, the Marine Corps promoted its bulldog mascot, Chesty XIV, to corporal. At a ceremony Friday morning at the Marine Barracks Washington, Gen. James Amos, the commandant of the Marine Corps, affixed the insignia of a corporal to Chesty. The Marine Corps Friday Night parade season ends tonight, the last ceremonial show that will be overseen by Gen. Amos, who is scheduled to relinquish command in October. And in remarks bidding adieu to the Marines at the Washington Barracks, Gen. Amos said he wanted to promote Chesty XIV before he departed.

Russia and China are betting that they can score points against President Obama while he´s tied up dealing with the growing threat from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. In the past week, Russian troops have crossed into Ukraine to aid separatists fighting the government in Kiev, and Chinese officials increased their rhetorical assault on U.S. surveillance flights over the South China Sea — in spite of talks designed to prevent incidents such as the Aug. 19 near-collision between a U.S. Navy spy plane and a Chinese fighter jet sent to intercept it. Only when it comes to college football do we believe that the deaths of a girlfriend and grandmother will spur a 21-year-old to lead his team to victory, and accept that a 22-year-old sprained his ankles from leaping off a three-story balcony to rescue a drowning nephew. The NFL may be played on Sundays, but college football is religion, with each team steeped in its own obscure mores, traditions, and believers. College football is a confounding sport with an arcane history at the intersection of higher education, the twilight of adolescence, and semi-professional football, all institutions of questionable integrity. We’ve all heard this refrain ad nauseam since 9/11: “Islamists are at war with the West. They hate us for who we are.” The fact is, though, that they don’t hate us for who we are. They hate us for who we’re not: we’re not Muslim, and that’s a characteristic we share with billions of people outside the West. If we could only get over our Western self-absorption, we could do a much better job of uniting with our natural allies to combat the global Islamist threat. PRESIDENT OBAMA’S acknowledgment that “we don’t have a strategy yet” in Syria understandably attracted the most attention after his perplexing meeting with reporters Thursday. But his restatement of the obvious was not the most dismaying aspect of his remarks. The president’s goal, to the extent he had one, seemed to be to tamp down all the assessments of gathering dangers that his own team had been issuing over the previous days. This argument with his own administration is alarming on three levels. The first has to do with simple competence. One can only imagine the whiplash that foreign leaders must be suffering.
