Recently released Bergdahl venturing

Bowe Bergdahl, the U.S. soldier held captive for five years by militants before his release a month ago, has ventured several times off an Army base in Texas as part of the effort to get him used to everyday life in America, a military spokeswoman said. His release on May 31 in exchange for five Taliban being held by the U.S. military has rankled some, including former members of his unit, who said he was a deserter who endangered colleagues searching for him. Yet while investigating circumstances surrounding his departure, the military has also said it´s focused on making sure Bergdahl

Now if this was happening in MA I wouldn´t be surprised. But Texas? I´m puzzled there have been no blanket parties for this individual. Or "interviews" on the street.

Sorry, but I don´t believe people in San Antonio would be shaking Bergdahl´s hand if they encountered him on the street.

Maybe Bergdahl needs to visit with the other guests at Lackland AFB. I read where H1N1,scabbies, lice, bedbugs, measles, TB is prevalent. He could show how he built up his immune system while living with the jihadists in Afghanistan for 5 years. He might even be encouraged to lend a hand in caring for them.

Misconduct at Justice Department
isn’t always prosecuted
McClatchy Newspapers, by Marisa Taylor & Michael Doyle    Original Article

WASHINGTON — Dozens of Justice Department officials, ranging from FBI special agents and prison wardens to high-level federal prosecutors, have escaped prosecution or firing in recent years despite findings of misconduct by the department’s own internal watchdog. Most of the names of the investigated officials, even the highest-ranking, remain under wraps. But documents McClatchy obtained under the Freedom of Information Act reveal for the first time a startling array of alleged transgressions uncovered by the department’s inspector general. These include: – Investigators concluded an assistant U.S. attorney “lacked candor” when interviewed by FBI agents investigating her husband’s “embezzlement activity.” The

PRETORIA, South Africa – The judge in the Oscar Pistorius muder trial has cleared the former Olympic and Paralymic sprinter of the most serious charge in connection with the shooting death of his girlfriend. Judge Thokozile Masipa said that the prosecution had not proved that Pistorius was guilty of premeditated murder when he shot and killed Reeva Steenkamp in the bathroom of his home on Valentine´s Day 2013. If found guilty on that charge, Pistorius could have faced a sentence of life in prison and been required to serve a minimum of 25 years. Pistorius also faces years in jail

Syria request upends Hill’s sleepy September

President Barack Obama’s urgent request that Congress authorize the arming and training of Syrian rebels is scrambling delicate plans on Capitol Hill less that two months before the midterm elections. This isn’t the quick and clean September Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) were hoping for. The glide path toward avoiding a government shutdown is suddenly more complicated — at least temporarily. House Republicans delayed the consideration of their government-funding bill, which was expected to get a vote on Thursday, to consider Obama’s request. The House isn’t expected to vote until Friday at the earliest. But it

By the time Massachusetts Rep. John F. Tierney knew he had a real primary race on his hands, it was too late. The nine-term lawmaker lost Tuesday night to fellow Democrat Seth Moulton, an Iraq War veteran who latched onto frustration with Tierney’s past ethical troubles and an anti-incumbent sentiment to win by a stunning 8-point margin. Multiple Democratic operatives in the Bay State and the District say the race shifted quickly in Moulton’s favor in the final week and a half, as voters ended summer vacations, kids returned to school and the electorate as a whole began to finally pay attention

BERKELEY, Mo. -- A planned highway shutdown fell through Wednesday as a wall of officers in riot gear kept Ferguson police shooting protesters from walking onto Interstate 70 in a nearby St. Louis suburb during the late afternoon commute. State troopers and St. Louis city and county officers warned the roughly 150 demonstrators who gathered to stay out of the road as they protested last month´s shooting of Michael Brown, a black, unarmed 18-year-old, by a white officer. There were nearly as many officers as demonstrators. Organizers said the protest in Berkeley was designed as an act of nonviolent civil disobedience

WASHINGTON -- For a president criticized as overly cautious and reluctant to lead, Barack Obama is taking a huge risk. He is thrusting U.S. fighting forces into a growing military operation with clear dangers, unknown costs, an indefinite length and unpredictable consequences. After years of resistance, the president who wanted to end America´s wars will now oversee a sweeping airstrike campaign in both Iraq and Syria, a country mired in an intractable civil war. He´s sending hundreds more U.S. troops to Iraq to help train security forces there. And he´s pressing Congress for authority to pour U.S. weaponry into Syria to

NEW YORK -- After Superstorm Sandy hit the East Coast nearly two years ago, the federal government quickly sent out $1.4 billion in emergency disaster aid to the hurricane´s victims. Now, thousands of people might have to pay back their share. The Federal Emergency Management Agency is scrutinizing about 4,500 households that it suspects received improper payments after the storm, according to program officials and data obtained by The Associated Press through a public records request. As of early September, FEMA had asked around 850 of those households to return a collective $5.8 million. The other cases were still under review. FEMA´s campaign

As Congress returns to Washington this week for the few remaining legislative days before the midterm elections, lawmakers will compare notes on what they heard and saw back home. They will also share impressions they gleaned about what will happen on Nov. 4. Democrats´ assessments will be particularly enlightening, and my guess is that those reports will be about as discouraging as they can get. Historically, midterm elections are generally referenda on the incumbent president. President Obama´s latest overall approval ratings are not far above his lowest yet. Public attitudes toward the Affordable Care Act have not noticeably improved. The extent

WASHINGTON--US President Barack Obama will tell the American people on Wednesday night that he plans to order strikes against Islamic State forces in both Syria and Iraq until the group is ultimately destroyed. The president´s plan includes additional support for opposition militias in Syria vetted by the United States, which will serve as a ground force complementing America´s air campaign. As we suspected, President Obama tried in his Wednesday-night speech to make it sound like he was doing something new when he, in fact, he is not. Moreover, in describing his response, he made plain that he doesn’t take the threat to the homeland seriously. For a threat his advisers say is greater than that posed by al-Qaeda after 2001, he proposed measures suitable for Yemen and Somalia. No, really — that’s the plan. For starters, the president doesn’t believe the Islamic State is a current threat to the U.S.: “So ISIL poses a threat to the people of Iraq

Rarely has a president faced a greater challenge in establishing his credibility for a new foreign-policy move than Barack Obama did in his nationally televised speech tonight. A CNN poll earlier this week found that just 30 percent of voters thought Obama had presented a clear plan for fighting the Islamic State. While Obama now pledges to ask Congress to train and aid Syrian rebels who would fight the group, voters remember that he backed similar plans in Syria in 2013, when his advisers saw Syrian president Bashar Assad as the major threat. Throughout his presidency, President Obama has emphasized one point while talking about Islamist extremists: They are not practicing Islam, he has said, they are perverting it. He took that a step further Wednesday night. While announcing that he´s expanding the campaign against the Islamic State extremist group into Syria, Obama said flatly that this group, which is trying to install a caliphate in the Middle East, "is not Islamic."
