Michelle Burdo of CBS46 apologizes
for saying ‘colored woman’

Atlanta Journal-Constitution [GA], by Rodney Ho

Original Article

Posted By:snakeoil, 7/1/2014 8:12:41 PM

CBS46 morning show host Michelle Burdo used the dated term “colored woman” during a segment about summer hair tips Monday morning during the 9 a.m. CBS Better Mornings Atlanta program. “Let me tell you something,” Burdo said during a live segment to an African-American woman who appears to be the hair expert. “I’m not a colored woman but I have kinky hair just like her and when you straighten it every day, it’s…” She pauses. The woman filled the empty air by saying, “healthier.”

Comments:
The thing that bugs me about this is who are the Word Police who get to decide which words can be used and by whom. At one time "black" was considered offensive and the preferred term was "colored" and now it´s flip flopped. In scientific terminology white light means the presence of all color in equal proportions and colored light is any light that is not white. Why do dictionaries have to be continuously rewritten to make the Word Police happy?

Stupid... if only the pc thought police knew where the reference to "colored" came from. It was used to describe folks who were mixed race rather than just black down in places like Louisiana since so many people were mixed rather than just one race. There is nothing offensive about it.

So what is the media approved word de jour this week? I cant keep up any more.

How do you know when your on the bottom of the social status ladder? When you´re allowed to be offended by all sorts of verbiage. Conversely, when you´re on the top of the social status ladder, you are the one who is always offending, and has no right to be offended. The people who are offended by remarks like this are telling us they are at the bottom of the social status ladder, and they want to milk it for what its worth.

Happy 158th birthday, Nikola Tesla. The anniversary of the Serbian-American inventor´s birth will be celebrated Thursday with cake and a flag-raising ceremony at his former laboratory in Shoreham, followed by discussions of his work at Shoreham-Wading River High School. Both events are free. Tesla, who was born July 10, 1856, in Croatia, has been credited with developing wireless technologies and devising some of the major components used in modern radio and electricity. Tesla achieved local fame in the early 20th century when he worked for about 12 years in a Shoreham lab called Wardenclyffe, at Route 25A and Randall Road.

If you’re an American, you might not flinch when you hear a certain bumpy green citrus fruit referred to as a kaffir lime. But in many parts of the world—most notably South Africa—the common moniker for the fruit, best known as an ingredient in Southeast Asian cooking, sounds heinously offensive. As Veronica Vinje recently pointed out on Straight.com, kaffir is “a horrible racial epithet, akin to using the N-word in North America.” So why are these limes called by that name? The K-word has a long, complex history, but how it came to refer to a type of citrus fruit is a bit murky. The Arabic word kafir was originally used to refer to

President Obama returned to his vacation home at Martha’s Vineyard after briefly interrupting his vacation for two days of meetings in Washington, D.C. Obama met with his economic team Tuesday before leaving the White House at 4:22 pm to return to his vacation home. He did not react to the news that broke later that evening about an ISIS video that showed the beheading of American journalist James Wright Foley. The National Security Council reacted, however, in a statement provided by spokesperson Caitlin Hayden. “We have seen a video that purports to be the murder of U.S. citizen James Foley by ISIL,” Hayden said.

From nearly 1,000 miles away, several Redskins players used the Monday Night Football stage to draw attention to the situation that has been unfolding in Ferguson, Missouri by running onto FedExField with their hands up in the air. Ferguson is where unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown was shot and killed by a white police officer on Aug. 9. Witnesses have said he was not aggressive toward the officer and had his hands raised above his head before he was shot. As a result, the words “hands up, don’t shoot” have become a rallying cry of protesters, both in Ferguson and online.
