After the initial celebration of Monday’s majority decision in the Hobby Lobby religious-liberty case before the Supreme Court, the loudest cheers of joy and gratitude came when the women of the Becket Fund – the legal team that argued Hobby Lobby’s case — appeared on the Court steps. One of those women, Hannah Smith, senior counsel at the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, talks about the case and the future of the Department of Health and Human Services Obamacare abortion-drug, contraception, sterilization mandate and religious freedom. There is “no evidence of criminal wrongdoing,” the Internal Revenue Service assured Americans during an internal investigation of the agency’s targeting of conservative groups. Few will find comfort in those words, and understandably so. Last week, while seeking to reassure Americans he has seen no evidence of a crime, IRS Commissioner John Koskinen acknowledged he had not even bothered to review any of the applicable laws. It seems like only yesterday that President Obama called the scandal “inexcusable” and pledged to work “hand in hand with Congress to get this thing fixed.” More recently, though, he dismissed it as a

In an exclusive interview with CNN’s Nima Elbagir by phone, Mariam Ibrahim, the Sudanese Christian woman who initially faced a death sentence for refusing to renounce her faith, spoke about the ordeal she faced while jailed. Part of that ordeal involved child birth, which she explained presented challenges to her and to the health of the child. "I gave birth chained. Not cuffs but chains on my legs. I couldn´t open my legs so the women had to lift me off the table. I wasn´t attached to the table," she said. "I don´t know in the future whether she´ll need.

Mother Jones’s list of the “eight best lines” from her dissent seems to be pretty popular on the Left, judging from social media. They may indeed be her best lines, but they’re not very good. Others (such as Jonathan Keim) have already tackled some of them, but here they are in the same order MJ presents them. Workers who sustain the operations of those corporations commonly are not drawn from one religious community.” This claim is obviously false. Many,

Some Thoughts on Hobby Lobby

The general sense about the Hobby Lobby decision handed down yesterday, very much suggested by the majority opinion itself, is that the ruling is highly significant for the particular matter at hand (the fate of the HHS mandate) but of limited significance for larger and broader questions beyond. It seems to me, however, that roughly the opposite may be the case. (snip) And Justice Ginsburg’s attempt to distinguish between profit-seeking and non-profit corporations on this front, made necessary by the fact that the administration did recognize the religious-liberty claims of some corporations and not others in this case, was the

RFRA Worked the Way It Was

Today an important religious- liberty law did what it was supposed to do. In Burwell v. Hobby Lobby, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) provided the Supreme Court with a mechanism for weighing competing claims in our pluralistic society. The Court determined that we can, in fact, balance seemingly conflicting interests without throwing out religious liberty. (nip) The Constitution and RFRA supply effective tools for protecting religious liberty, even in a culture with deep disagreements on issues such as abortion. You don’t have to agree with the Hahn and Green families’ decision to support their freedom to make that decision.

Judicial Watch participated in a major victory for the rule of law and the U.S. Constitution – and Barack Obama received a humiliating setback in his ruthless, reckless efforts to “fundamentally transform” America by egregiously exceeding constitutional restraints on presidential power. The Supreme Court – in a stunning 9-0 vote – ruled that Obama overstepped his constitutional authority in bypassing the U.S. Senate to make a series of “recess appointments” to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). In November 2012, JW and the Allied Educational Foundation (AEF) jointly filed an amici curiae brief in National Labor Relations Board v. Noel

Hillary Clinton: Hobby Lobby

Monday at the Aspen Institute, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton reacted to the Supreme Court´s Hobby Lobby 5-4 ruling against requiring certain companies to offer their employees types of birth control as part of the Affordable Care Act mandate by calling it a "deeply disturbing" slippery slope. Clinton warned blood transfusions are against some religions and questioned if they could be banned but the court specifically said in the ruling that "this decision concerns only the contraception mandate" and does not apply to the question of whether for-profit companies could claim a religious exemption for other potentially controversial procedures

“A welcome antidote to the official insensitivity to religion” is how the New York Times described the Religious Freedom Restoration Act when it was passed by Congress in 1993. That, by the way, was the 103rd Congress. Both of its houses were controlled by the Democrats. The bill was inked by President Clinton, who is a Democrat. It turns out, however, that neither the Times nor the Democrats meant any of it. They don’t give a fig about religious freedom. Nope. When the Supreme Court decided, as it did this morning, that the Religious Freedom Restoration Act covered not only,

Six days before President Obama called for more funding to address the tens of thousands of unaccompanied children streaming across the southern U.S. border, a top Obama administration official said the border patrol was “adequately staffed” and had the “resources available” to deal with the problem. The remarks, given the abrupt turnaround by Obama, drew the ire of Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT), who slammed the witness Ronald D. Vitiello, Deputy Chief of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, for “misleading” Congress. "They misled Congress and then blamed Congress. That´s how unorganized they are. On Monday, conservatives across the country celebrated Justice Samuel Alito’s decisions in Harris v. Quinn and the so-called Hobby Lobby case. Harris v. Quinn established that states could not force home health care providers into unions; the Hobby Lobby case decided that closely-held, for-profit corporations owned by religious people could not be forced to pay for the contraceptive care of their employees. Right-wingers on Twitter, talk radio, and throughout the blogosphere hailed the decisions as great conservative victories; leftists hailed them as great defeats (including the execrable Sandra Fluke, who falsely tweeted that the Supreme Court had somehow granted blanket

Megyn Kelly faced off with former Weather Underground leader Bill Ayers in an explosive interview tonight in which Kelly repeatedly confronted Ayers about bombings and killings that the radical group was reportedly involved in. Kelly asked Ayers how many bombings he was personally responsible for. Ayers declined to answer, but did acknowledge the “terrible risk” they took with some of their more out-there tactics. Kelly grilled him on how the Weather Underground “declared a state of war against the U.S. government” and encouraged violence. Kelly went through a series of instances in which the Weather Underground was tied to bombings and killings,

The Keystone Pipeline project was expected to create tens of thousands of high paying jobs in the oil industry. The project itself would create 20,000 construction jobs. And the pipeline would bring oil from Canada and North Dakota to refineries in the United States. The proposed project would have extended from Alberta, Canada to Illinois, transporting approximately 400,000 barrels of crude oil per day. Estimated cost is $1.7 billion. But Obama rejected the plan in 2011 and 2014. Democrats are beholden to the radical green movement – the poor and middle class be damned. Now this… Canada pulled the plug on Keystone and will

As thousands of disease-riddled criminals storm across our borders, is it really time to mince words? President Obama appears to have an Agenda for America that stinks worse than a Border Patrol bus depot crammed with urine-drenched illegals. Is the man trying to protect and defend us, or does he want us to kick the bucket, run down the curtain, and join the choir invisible? On January 29, 2014, the Department of Homeland Security advertised for a vendor to escort 65,000 “unaccompanied alien children,” indicating that they not only knew the alien invasion was coming, they planned it.

Today, the Supreme Court ruled in the nationally followed Hobby Lobby case. The for-profit corporations that brought these cases to the Supreme Court—a craft store and a cabinet manufacturer—argued that the corporations’ religious convictions should excuse them from compensating their employees through the comprehensive health insurance required by law. Specifically, these private employers sought to exclude insurance coverage of several forms of birth control because, contrary to medical and scientific evidence, the corporations’ owners believe some birth control causes abortions. The Affordable Care Act already includes special arrangements for houses of worship and religious non-profits, like schools and hospitals. Houses

One week after traveling to Mississippi to do his utmost to help Senator Thad Cochran (R) beat Tea Party rival Chris McDaniel, Senator John McCain (R-AZ) talked about the strengths he saw in Cochran´s approach to campaigning. According to AZ Central, McCain dismissed criticism over the tactics the Republican Establishment used to get black Democrats to cross over and vote for Cochran. Said McCain, "There are some people complaining that African-American voters voted. [But] I thought one of the major priorities of the Republican Party was to get all minority and ethnic voters out to vote for Republicans." He described Cochran´s "get-out-the-vote campaign"

The Israeli Air Force carried out what it called "precision strikes" on 34 "terror targets" in the Gaza Strip overnight, after the discovery of the bodies of three Israeli teenagers who were kidnapped in the West Bank earlier this month. The Israeli Defense Forces said the strikes were in response to rockets being launched earlier into Israel from Gaza. The waves of rockets from Gaza and IDF retaliations have picked up since the teens were kidnapped and the Israeli crackdown began. Hamas has not claimed responsibility for launching the rockets but Israel holds them responsible for everything coming out of Gaza. The Israel Defense

President Barack Obama announced today that he would again go around Congress to enact immigration reform measures. In a hastily scheduled statement this afternoon from the White House Rose Garden, Obama said he would ´greatly prefer´ Congress passing any sort of immigration reform legislation, even if it wasn´t the bill he supports, but he was done sitting around waiting for that to happen. The president said his administration would ´refocus´ its efforts on the border, and he would use his ´existing legal authority´ to do ´what Congress refuses to do´ and fix the broken immigration system.
