House no longer requiring lawmakers

The House is no longer requiring lawmakers to report some free trips they take on the annual forms they file about their personal finances. The change was not publicly announced but was described in an instruction book available to lawmakers on how to fill out the forms. Legislators will still have to report details about their travel on the House clerk´s website, which is less commonly monitored by reporters, watchdog groups and others than the financial disclosure reports. That information is publicly available and is far more specific than the one line that -- until now -- they have provided on their

I wonder if these twits are required to list these "free" trips as income on their Federal tax form. It is a requirement for a private citizen to claim a free trip as income - and pay taxes on the value of the free trip.

I interpret this to mean: 1. all reports are made on a central website available to the public, and 2. they are required to provide details about the trip.

I don´t see this as a bad thing.

At yesterday’s tan suit presser, President Obama said a whole lot of nothing. After informing our ISIS enemies that he has no idea what he’s going to do about them - if anything - he turned his attention to Russia. It’s should be obvious to every clear-thinking man, woman, and child that, if over a thousand troops, tanks, and paratroopers drop into a foreign nation, it’s being invaded. Unfortunately, it seems that it’s not obvious to Barack Obama. ...Because the word “invasion” has magically disappeared from his vocabulary. It may sound pedestrian to point out, but it’s critical to restate why it’s so important that our nation is called the United States of America, and not simply America. The full name emphasizes that the Founders viewed the nation not as one monolithic entity but as a union of sovereign entities delegating limited powers to a central government. To preserve this balance, the Founders put a number of checks in the U.S. Constitution, most notably creating the Senate, which allows for equal membership from every state, thus preventing states with larger populations from running roughshod over the interests of smaller

In a recent New York Times column, Paul Krugman made the assertion that “self-proclaimed libertarians deal with the problem of market failure both by pretending that it doesn’t happen and by imagining government as much worse than it really is.” But suppose we flip that around — substituting “muddle-headed progressives” for “self-proclaimed libertarians” and “government failure” for “market failure.” Compliments to Per Bylund, a research professor at the Hankamer School of Business at Baylor University, for making the necessary adjustments in a blog post at Mises. org. Mississippi State Sen. Chris McDaniel has filed his official challenge of the June 24 GOP primary runoff results against incumbent Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS) in state court, he and his lead attorney Mitch Tyner announced Thursday. "Republicans did not elect the nominee on June 24," McDaniel said in a statement, adding that “we are excited for the opportunity for Republicans to reclaim their primary process.” "This challenge is not about the candidates,” McDaniel said. “It is about the integrity of Mississippi´s election process, and we are committed to ensuring that process is accurate and fair for future Republican candidates.”

Late last month, as members of Congress were poised to leave for their summer recess, the House Republicans’ top policy experts found themselves in a barren conference room in the Capitol’s basement, negotiating with the party’s most ardent opponents of immigration overhaul. As senior members of the Judiciary Committee looked on, the opponents — Representatives Raúl R. Labrador of Idaho, Louie Gohmert of Texas, Steve King of Iowa and Mo Brooks of Alabama — reshaped two bills to address the rush of unaccompanied children trying to enter the country illegally. Representative Michele Bachmann, Republican of Minnesota, was there, too, and she

A shattering new study by two political science professors has found that ordinary Americans have virtually no impact whatsoever on the making of national policy in our country. The analysts found that rich individuals and business-controlled interest groups largely shape policy outcomes in the United States. This study should be a loud wake-up call to the vast majority of Americans who are bypassed by their government. To reclaim the promise of American democracy, ordinary citizens must act positively to change the relationship between the people and our government The new study, with the jaw-clenching title of "Testing Theories of American Politics: Elites,

The culprit is the warming seas - and in particular the Gulf of Maine, whose waters are heating up faster than 99 percent of the world´s oceans, scientists say. Long-established species of commercial fish, like cod, herring and northern shrimp, are departing for colder waters. Black sea bass, blue crabs and new species of squid - all highly unusual for the Gulf - are turning up in fishermen´s nets. The Gulf of Maine´s warming reflects broader

Jimmy Carter left the Southern Baptist Church a few years back, citing its “rigid” views. Muslim views tend to be a whole lot more “rigid.” For instance, Saudi Arabia doesn’t allow Christians to build any churches. Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood supporters are waging pogroms against Christians. If a Muslim leaves Islam, they are called an apostate and are often marked or death.
