HOUSTON (AP) — Rushing into a Houston home, police officer Austin Huckabee encountered a drunken, combative man bleeding profusely on the kitchen floor. He quickly realized the blood was spurting in rhythm with the man´s heart and cardiac arrest was just moments away. Pulling a tourniquet from his belt, the former Army captain and his partner restrained the man, wrapped the band around his arm and twisted an attached rod to tighten it until the bleeding stopped. Then Huckabee waited for paramedics, knowing a life had been saved.(Snip) Now law-enforcement agencies nationwide are equipping officers with the blood-staunching bands in

Friend of mine and a fellow hunter saved his own life with a CAT device like this.
He´d been shot (mistakenly, by a very stupid other hunter some distance away) and they were about 5 hours from the nearest medical facility. He applied it to his let (femoral artery had been nicked) and it allowed them all time to get to the hospital.
The crazy thing is that he´d just purchased it a week earlier, just prior to setting out on his hunting trip.

I am really surprised the military stopped using them. Good to see some common sense return.

In a severe cut in which an artery or large vein is severed, fatal exsanguination can occur in moments. Way back in Boy Scouts´ first aid, we learned that in the worst cases, a tourniquet is the only thing that can save one from a fatal arterial bleed. The only caveat is that that part of the body beyond the tourniquet will probably be useless afterward, since its blood supply will be totally shut off. A tourniquet should be used only in the direst situation, when saving the patient´s life (but not his extremity) is all that can be done.

In the case of Shia LeBoeuf, I would recommend the police use the neck tourniquet. Keep on tightening until all resistance ceases.

I took an Emergency Casualty Care course. Now I carry a tourniquet everywhere I go.

To me, the dumbest thing about this is that my old boy scout manual had instructions for using a tourniquet, using a belt or large handkerchief and a stick. It even had instructions to loosen the tourniquet every (??) minutes to keep from getting gangrene. They later, supposedly, changed that part to just leave it on until getting medical aid. Then, mysteriously, the whole idea of a tourniquet just disappeared. I guess along with handkerchiefs? Now, the idea is supposedly new?

I didn´t know they were done away with, which is rather dumb. I just checked my first aid kit and, sure enough, there is not one in there. I will correct that immediately.

The decision by Sen. John Walsh (D-Mont.) not to seek election in November in the wake of a plagiarism scandal is the latest piece of good news for Republicans as they strive to take control of the Senate in less than three months. Walsh’s departure from the race came in the same week that two Republican senators — Pat Roberts in Kansas and Lamar Alexander in Tennessee — defeated tea party challengers in primary fights, ensuring that every GOP senator seeking reelection would be the party’s nominee. These past seven days typified the fates of the two parties this election

Oscar winner and comedian Robin Williams died this morning at 63. While his publicist wouldn’t confirm that it was a suicide, they did issue this statement. “Robin Williams passed away this morning. He has been battling severe depression of late. This is a tragic and sudden loss. The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time.” Williams, who won an Oscar for his supporting role in Good Will Hunting, will reprise his role as Theodore Roosevelt in the third installment of Night at the Museum this December. He had recently signed on to reprise his

Barack Obama deliberately set out to lose the war in Iraq, and he did. He defied the advice of his joint chiefs of staff to secure America’s formidable military presence and keep 20,000 troops in country, and left Iraq to its own devices and the tender mercies of Iran. In doing so, he betrayed every American and Iraqi who gave his life to create a free Iraq and keep it out of the clutches of the terrorists. Iraq is now a war zone dominated by the terrorist forces of the Islamic State, whose rise Obama’s policies fostered. Both his secretaries

Bill and Hillary Clinton are making the most of their downtime in the Hamptons. The former U.S. President and his ex-Secretary of State wife were pictured this morning enjoying a stroll on the beach in Amagansett, where they are paying $100,000 to rent an $18million five-bedroom property for three weeks. The couple, who were accompanied by their dogs as well as a Secret Service agent, were dressed in very casual clothes, with President Clinton decked out in black SoulCycle shorts and green sneakers and his wife in a bright blue muumuu and slippers. Mrs Clinton, 66, kept her eyes shaded from the sun

Rosie O’Donnell, the past and future co-host of The View, on Friday reaffirmed her support of the 9/11 truther conspiracy theory. When asked by this writer if she continues to reject the idea that Muslim terrorists flew planes into buildings, O’Donnell tweeted in response, “i still do not believe the official story.” [See below for a screen shot of the tweet.] O’Donnell left The View in 2007 after battling with conservative Elisabeth Hasselbeck. On March 29, 2007, she promoted trutherism, saying of September 11th: “I do believe it is the first time in history that fire has ever melted steel. I

A terrifying jihadist group is conquering and butchering its way across big swaths of Iraq and Syria. Planes are falling out of the sky on what seems like a weekly basis. Civilians are being killed in massive numbers in the Israel-Gaza conflict. Others are falling prey to Ebola in West Africa. The world, in short, is falling apart. That’s how it feels, at least, to those of us who sit at a blessed remove from the death and destruction, but who are watching every bloody moment of it via cable news and social media. It raises an important question: In an

When he was running for re-election in 2012, President Barack Obama repeatedly took credit for ending the war in Iraq and bringing all U.S. troops home from that country. At the White House on Saturday, however, when talking about his decision to use military force against the al-Qaida-related ISIS terrorist group in Iraq, Obama said removing all U.S. troops from Iraq was not “my decision.” “You know I say what I mean and I mean what I say,” Obama said in Hollywood, Florida on Nov. 4, 2012. “I said I´d end the war in Iraq. I ended it.” That statement

It didn´t take long for Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) to embrace amnesty again. As soon as he won his Senate primary election against conservative Joe Carr, Alexander said it was "embarrassing" that Republicans have not yet passed a bill. Never mind that Alexander spent nearly his entire primary campaign trying to convince voters that he was against "amnesty" and would never dare to embrace it before the primary election. “I don’t know how it will affect our politics in the near term," Alexander told Politico of a comprehensive immigration bill. “I think it’s embarrassing for us not to deal with the problem, and

A 40-year political career came to a close after Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie lost his bid for a second term in a stunning primary-election defeat by a fellow Democrat and state senator who defied party leadership to challenge the incumbent. A second intraparty fight for U.S. Senate was too close to call. State Sen. David Ige, once seen as an underdog, cruised to a decisive 35 percentage point win in Saturday´s primary after being dramatically outspent by Abercrombie, who also had high-profile endorsements including President Barack Obama. Ige said his win "proves that people power can be money power, especially in Hawaii."

The aunt of the sprint car driver who was struck and killed by auto racer Tony Stewart on Saturday has blamed the NASCAR hothead’s temper for her nephew’s death. “Thanks for thinking of our family tony Stewart when you decided to be a d***!,” said Wendi Ward, aunt of driver Kevin Ward Jr., who was fatally struck when he exited his vehicle to confront Stewart during the caution flag of a dirt track sprint car race in upstate New York on Saturday. An Isis commander at a terrorist training camp north of Baghdad accidentally detonated a belt packed with explosives during a demonstration in front of a group militants on Monday, killing himself and 21 nearby trainees. The accident was a source of dark humour for locals, with suicide attacks in public spaces having become an almost daily occurrence in Iraq. A bomber struck a falafel shop near the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Baghdad last week, and when told of the bungled training demonstration by the New York Times, Raad Hashim, who works at a liquor store near the site of

Frank Maloney, the former boxing promoter who guided Lennox Lewis to the world heavyweight title, is now living as a woman and plans to undergo a sex change. The 61-year-old told a tabloid newspaper she now lives as a woman called Kellie. Maloney, a twice married father-of-three, has been living as a female for more than a year and has begun hormone therapy, the Sunday Mirror reported. “I wasn´t born into the right body, I have always known I was a woman. I can´t keep living in the shadows," she said. The newspaper told in a six-page story how Maloney's unhappiness over her secret wish to be a woman had
