Tourniquets Make Comeback
with American Police

HOUSTON (AP) — Rushing into a Houston home, police officer Austin Huckabee encountered a drunken, combative man bleeding profusely on the kitchen floor. He quickly realized the blood was spurting in rhythm with the man´s heart and cardiac arrest was just moments away. Pulling a tourniquet from his belt, the former Army captain and his partner restrained the man, wrapped the band around his arm and twisted an attached rod to tighten it until the bleeding stopped. Then Huckabee waited for paramedics, knowing a life had been saved.(Snip) Now law-enforcement agencies nationwide are equipping officers with the blood-staunching bands in

Friend of mine and a fellow hunter saved his own life with a CAT device like this.
He´d been shot (mistakenly, by a very stupid other hunter some distance away) and they were about 5 hours from the nearest medical facility. He applied it to his let (femoral artery had been nicked) and it allowed them all time to get to the hospital.
The crazy thing is that he´d just purchased it a week earlier, just prior to setting out on his hunting trip.

I am really surprised the military stopped using them. Good to see some common sense return.

In a severe cut in which an artery or large vein is severed, fatal exsanguination can occur in moments. Way back in Boy Scouts´ first aid, we learned that in the worst cases, a tourniquet is the only thing that can save one from a fatal arterial bleed. The only caveat is that that part of the body beyond the tourniquet will probably be useless afterward, since its blood supply will be totally shut off. A tourniquet should be used only in the direst situation, when saving the patient´s life (but not his extremity) is all that can be done.

In the case of Shia LeBoeuf, I would recommend the police use the neck tourniquet. Keep on tightening until all resistance ceases.

I took an Emergency Casualty Care course. Now I carry a tourniquet everywhere I go.

To me, the dumbest thing about this is that my old boy scout manual had instructions for using a tourniquet, using a belt or large handkerchief and a stick. It even had instructions to loosen the tourniquet every (??) minutes to keep from getting gangrene. They later, supposedly, changed that part to just leave it on until getting medical aid. Then, mysteriously, the whole idea of a tourniquet just disappeared. I guess along with handkerchiefs? Now, the idea is supposedly new?

I didn´t know they were done away with, which is rather dumb. I just checked my first aid kit and, sure enough, there is not one in there. I will correct that immediately.

Four-star Gen. James Amos, commandant of the Marine Corps, used a speaking engagement at the Brookings Institute on Tuesday to deliver a stinging rebuke of the Obama administration’s handling of Iraq. “I have a hard time believing that had we been there, and worked with the government, and worked with parliament, and worked with the minister of defense, the minister of interior, I don’t think we’d be in the same shape we’re in today,” Gen. Amos said, the Fiscal Times reported Wednesday. It is rare for an active-duty serviceman to give such blunt public criticism of a sitting president. While

Along with citing a list of moderate GOP governors with last names like Bush and Christie as potential 2016 GOP presidential candidates, "Arizona Sen. John McCain said Thursday that he believes Republicans can defeat former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in 2016, but only if they pass immigration reform." Calling Hillary Clinton the "odds-on favorite right now“ to win the White House in 2016, McCain added, "I expect it to be very competitive, except if we don’t enact some kind of comprehensive immigration reform, I do not see a way for us to really win a general election.”

It is at times like these, when he is pushed kicking and screaming into the crucible, that Obama’s callowness shows. For his supporters, that jejune, jocular air has been a plus for almost six years. For the rest of us, it has served as a liability and an irritation. Yesterday, it became a wholesale embarrassment. On the perpetual-campaign trail, the pattern is familiar. Trotting up to the podium, the president fist-bumps the audience’s stragglers and smiles a toothy and humble grin at those who catch his eye. While speaking, he responds to obsequy with obsequy — “I love you too!” he

Political pundits are divided about the merits of House Speaker John Boehner´s lawsuit against President Obama´s employer mandate. But should the chief executive be worried that two constitutional law experts — one a conservative, the other a liberal who voted for Obama — not only think the suit has merit but will likely succeed? The two backing Boehner and two constitutional law experts who oppose the suit testified Wednesday before the House Rules Committee. The uber presidency George Washington University Law Prof. Jonathan Turley voted for Obama but in recent months has become perhaps the most visible critic of what he views as a

If you haven’t seen them, what are you waiting for?(Snip)The films in our list walk the cinematic waterfront, from Westerns to dramas and comedies. Now, all of them weren’t necessarily filmed here but as long as their stories take place (mostly) within our borders, we counted them as one of our own. Barack Obama provoked fury in the U.S. by casually devoting mere moments to the deaths of 295 people aboard a Malaysian airliner on Thursday in Wilmington, Delaware, and then launching into jokes and his prepared remarks on the need to expand America´s transportation infrastructure. Twenty-three Americans are feared dead after the jetliner crashed in eastern Ukraine. Obama declared that ´it looks like it may be a terrible tragedy, but not before enthusiastically declaring that ´it is wonderful to be back in Delaware.´ ´Before I begin, obviously the world is watching reports of a downed passenger jet near the Russia-Ukraine border. House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) indicated today that if President Barack Obama takes actions that exceed his constitutional authority, the House of Representatives has no plans to use its own constitutional authority to withhold funding from those actions. At his weekly press briefing, CNSNews.com asked Boehner: “You’ve said you disagree with calls to impeach the president over abuse of power via executive actions. But under the Constitution the House actually has the power of the purse. So, if the President takes actions that exceed his Constitutional authority, will you withhold funding for those actions in the next must-pass

Now that the U.S.-Russia relationship has broken down, Moscow could throw a wrench into the teetering nuclear negotiations with Iran. The escalating tensions between Washington and Moscow, brought to fever by the MH17 airliner disaster, are finally to the point where they threaten to spoil the number one item on President Obama’s foreign policy agenda: the nuclear talks with Iran. The man doing the threatening is Russian President Vladimir Putin.Earlier this week, Putin promised to retaliate against the United States for new sanctions targeting his friends and business associates, as well as large Russian defense, energy, and financial firms. (Video) The Washington Free Beacon has put together a greatest hits compilation of the Democrats’ border security quotes. Why would the Democrats continuously insist that the border is secure? Perhaps because Republicans insist on having a secure border before discussing any type of immigration reform legislation. Democrats don’t think people will catch up to this at some point? The PR game that carried Obama – health care lies and all – to the White House is showing significant signs of incompetent wear and tear
