The most interesting overnight news is that former French president Nicolas Sarkozy has been “held for questioning” by police investigating allegations that he tried to influence a judge investigating a illegal contributions to his campaign. Under French law a person can be “held” for up to 48 hours without being charged. “This is thought to be the first time a French former head of state has been held in police custody.” (Snip) In today’s Vox, Ezra Klein writes of unease about the provenance of the Clinton stash. ”The problem isn’t that the Clintons are rich, it’s where the money came

Hmmmm. Maybe just this once America should follow the Frogs´ lead. As Wretchard relates (through Wikipedia) Moammar Khadafy took a sword poke en el culo and exsanguinated. That would not be a good way to go. Later, I loved the sardonic poke that if the Clintons weren´t so incorruptible, we´d be in trouble. As if.

FTA According to some sources, Gaddafi was in fact killed by a French spy who infiltrated the mob of rebels that captured Gaddafi, and shot him in the head after his capture. The motive for the operation was said to be to prevent Gaddafi from being interrogated and revealing his highly suspicious links with French President Nicolas Sarkozy."
Obama and Sarkozy had personal motives to kill Qadaffi.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — First the rain came, flooding an already soft and vulnerable Valhalla Golf Club on Sunday afternoon until the greens were ponds and the fairways were streaked by flowing rivulets. The leader board heading into the final round was stocked with golf’s elite, and the combination of talent and a vulnerable, receptive course foreshadowed a showdown of aggressive, attacking shot-making. (Snip) Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler and Henrik Stenson took turns holding at least a piece of the tournament lead across four hours of major championship anxiety. Racing to be done before sunset because the rain had

Headlines have focused on the atrocities committed by ISIS on the northern Iraqi front. (Snip) The story adds, almost superfluously, that ISIS is attempting to shoot down aid deliveries. They would do that, wouldn’t they? Yet all this time the world was assured there was nothing to worry about in the hundreds of radical mosques, the thousands of militants eagerly received into the West and creeping sharia law in its institutions. The dangers, they were told, all lay in the Tea Party and elusive militia groups holed up in a cabin in the Ozarks. But if the calamities in Iraq

At one time if you had said that an African-American would be president of the United States people would have thought you were crazy. Praise God those days are behind us. At one time if you had said there would be a rogue president violating the Constitution at will and daring Congress to impeach him you would have been accused of either taking drugs or needing some. Sad to say those days are upon us. (Snip) Why would a president even speak of impeachment? The democratic machine is using it for fundraising. They are also using it gin up support

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- It is 14 years from now. Rory McIlroy is 39. Think of the possibilities. Has McIlroy won the 15-20 majors that the great Jack Nicklaus predicted he would back in August of 2014? (Snip) McIlroy is at the brink of greatness. Or near greatness. Or whatever you call what he´s doing these days, which is pretty much giving dog commands to the rest of the tournament fields: Sit ... stay ... roll over. This week, it´s the PGA Championship. It’s not unusual for Obama to regale us with his deep thoughts. He does it all the time. Not for him the adage (I think it’s Mark Twain’s) that “it’s better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than open it and remove all doubt.” No, Obama speaks on matters great and small with “the calm confidence of a Christian with four aces” (Twain again). Obama called in one of his most prominent apostles to record his thoughts on current events this week. That would be New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman. Friedman now gives us “Obama on the

ISIS has routed Kurdish forces in their early engagements, mostly because they are better armed. (Snip) There are rumors that the CIA might be supplying the Kurds with small amounts of weaponry, but is the Obama administration finally willing to help arm the Kurds in a significant way? Perhaps not: "Pentagon officials say their policy hasn’t changed — they will only sell arms to Baghdad." My God, how lame is it possible for a human being to be? The peshmerga are a brave, competent fighting force. But they need modern weapons–and they are even willing to pay for them! Everyone

Most public facts fall into the “maybe” category. Let’s review the maybes in three categories of recent headlines. 1. the conflict with Russia; 2. the situation in Iraq; 3. the transmissability of Ebola. The conventional wisdom is that ‘Putin is on the run’ and ‘Edward Snowden was a patriotic whistleblower’. Ed Epstein has recorded a YouTube video that might make you rethink the proposition that Snowden acted with good intentions. Epstein argues that the vast majority of documents Snowden stole pertained to US penetrations of Chinese and Russian systems. Only a very small portion of his take bore upon NSA

I saw "King Lear" in late July, an outdoor production in New York´s Central Park, and I thought about my mother—though it´s a play in which no one is a mother or even has a mother. For me, right now, "King Lear" is not—not yet—primarily a play about growing old and losing your powers, mental and physical, and your worldly authority. For me, in this stage of my life, it´s a play about taking care—or failing to take proper care—of an aging parent, about watching that aging parent lose the pieces of himself, and about the ways that grown-up and even middle-aged siblings replay their rivalries and relationships as they watch their

TAMPA — Massive hammerhead sharks have been spotted and caught in the Gulf waters between Naples and Tampa Bay for over a century, but one ornery, impossible-to-catch creature has become a legend. Fish tales have been passed down for decades about an elusive, 25-foot-long great hammerhead that is bigger than a pickup truck and covered with battle scars from encounters with boat bottoms, propellers, harpoons, countless fish hooks and even a machete. Nicknamed “Old Hitler,” this hammerhead would be more than 70 years old if all the stories were true and all were about the same shark. “He is Florida’s

The man who brought the Ebola virus to Nigeria probably knew he was infected. (Snip) The received Western wisdom is that an Ebola epidemic is best controlled by quarantine and contact monitoring. You know, with isolation wards and databases and non-available disposable protective clothing in 110 degree heat. In a word, through a program of action which Africa is singularly unable to carry out. African officialdom lives by lies, faking documents and jumping the queue. In an interview with the New Yorker’s David Remnick in January, President Obama dismissed ISIS as the “jayvee”: "The analogy we use around here sometimes, and I think is accurate, is if a jayvee team puts on Lakers uniforms that doesn’t make them Kobe Bryant." Yesterday, with much of Iraq now in the jayvee’s hands, Obama finally recognized it as enough of a threat to warrant the authorization of U.S. military action. Sort of: "To stop the advance on Irbil, I directed our military to take targeted strikes against ISIL terrorist convoys should they move towards the city." What is

Barack Obama deliberately set out to lose the war in Iraq, and he did. He defied the advice of his joint chiefs of staff to secure America’s formidable military presence and keep 20,000 troops in country, and left Iraq to its own devices and the tender mercies of Iran. In doing so, he betrayed every American and Iraqi who gave his life to create a free Iraq and keep it out of the clutches of the terrorists. Iraq is now a war zone dominated by the terrorist forces of the Islamic State, whose rise Obama’s policies fostered. Both his secretaries

The decision by Sen. John Walsh (D-Mont.) not to seek election in November in the wake of a plagiarism scandal is the latest piece of good news for Republicans as they strive to take control of the Senate in less than three months. Walsh’s departure from the race came in the same week that two Republican senators — Pat Roberts in Kansas and Lamar Alexander in Tennessee — defeated tea party challengers in primary fights, ensuring that every GOP senator seeking reelection would be the party’s nominee. These past seven days typified the fates of the two parties this election

A terrifying jihadist group is conquering and butchering its way across big swaths of Iraq and Syria. Planes are falling out of the sky on what seems like a weekly basis. Civilians are being killed in massive numbers in the Israel-Gaza conflict. Others are falling prey to Ebola in West Africa. The world, in short, is falling apart. That’s how it feels, at least, to those of us who sit at a blessed remove from the death and destruction, but who are watching every bloody moment of it via cable news and social media. When he was running for re-election in 2012, President Barack Obama repeatedly took credit for ending the war in Iraq and bringing all U.S. troops home from that country. At the White House on Saturday, however, when talking about his decision to use military force against the al-Qaida-related ISIS terrorist group in Iraq, Obama said removing all U.S. troops from Iraq was not “my decision.” “You know I say what I mean and I mean what I say,” Obama said in Hollywood, Florida on Nov. 4, 2012. “I said I´d end the war in Iraq. A 40-year political career came to a close after Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie lost his bid for a second term in a stunning primary-election defeat by a fellow Democrat and state senator who defied party leadership to challenge the incumbent. A second intraparty fight for U.S. Senate was too close to call. State Sen. David Ige, once seen as an underdog, cruised to a decisive 35 percentage point win in Saturday´s primary after being dramatically outspent by Abercrombie, who also had high-profile endorsements including President Barack Obama. Ige said his win "proves that people power can be money power, especially in Hawaii."
