White House fears al Qaeda
offshoot may be planning bomb
plot on airliner flying to US

Telegraph [UK], by Raf Sanchez, David Millward

The United States fears that two of al-Qaeda´s most deadly international offshoots are plotting to bring down a commercial airliner with the help of European jihadists returning from Syria. The White House is debating asking its allies to step up airport security in response to the new threat from the terror group´s Syrian and Yemeni branches, meaning British travellers could face intensified screenings. The American plan, reported by ABC News, could call for an influx of armed US air marshals on British flights or an increase in searches of passengers headed to the US.

Iran´s Deputy Chief of Staff has said that soldiers from the Islamic Republic were operating "in the field" together with Palestinian terrorist groups. The support of Parliament for British participation in air strikes in northern Iraq is welcome but leaves crucial questions unanswered. The most serious flaw in the international response to the Islamic State threat is the failure to see Iraq and Syria requiring a common military and political strategy. The Islamic State terrorists have, effectively, abolished the international border between these two countries. To some extent this has been recognised by the United States, which has launched air strikes against terrorist targets in both countries. These air strikes, over a period of weeks, are likely to have a serious degrading effect on the terrorist

There is a sense of relief across the political spectrum that Britain is finally doing something in Iraq. It was impossible to tolerate the advance of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) any longer, and now the UK finds itself part of an international effort with parameters of action that, the public is assured, will not lead to long-term troop presence or nation-building. Thanks in part to a rigorous parliamentary debate, the British people understand why they are in Iraq somewhat better than they did in 2003. [Snip] But what will happen next? We’re being had. Again. For six years, President Obama has endeavored to will the country into accepting two pillars of his alternative national-security reality. First, he claims to have dealt decisively with the terrorist threat, rendering it a disparate series of ragtag jayvees. Second, he asserts that the threat is unrelated to Islam, which is innately peaceful, moderate, and opposed to the wanton “violent extremists” who purport to act in its name. When the U.S. military strikes, its leaders often choose colorful code names for the operation that sometimes stick in history, like Operation Overlord or Rolling Thunder or Desert Storm. Not this time. The U.S.-led air campaign against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria doesn´t have a name. "I know of no plans at this point to name it," Pentagon spokesman Rear Adm. John Kirby said Thursday. Since World War II, almost every U.S. military operation, large and small, has had a code name. Political pollsters have a tough job. They have to create formulas to determine if the person they are interviewing is likely to vote, and it is within this calculation that their reputations are made. Typically, those who are likely to vote in an off-year election are pretty set. They are the people who always vote in elections — with some motivated by specific issues. In a wave election, the number of those motivated by specific issues escalates, changing the electoral landscape as the candidates who are beneficiaries of this increased participation sweep to victory. The 2014 election is rapidly looking like something new
