Who: Team USA will take on Team Belgium in the first round of elimination play When: Tuesday, July 1, 3 p.m. CST Where: Broadcast on ESPN, viewing parties at Soldier Field and any bar worth a lick Why: #BecauseItsTheCup Good news! Just as we were all starting to feel comfortable making sense of group play, where points mean losing can still be a win, the United States enters the Round of 16 quarterfinals. Here, a win is a win and nothing else matters. The bad news: See above. Belgium finished at the top of Group H, having not lost a

Yawn. I live in Belgium, where everybody expects me to be super-excited about this game. In fact, neither I or my son, who holds dual citizenship, care a fig abut the game or the outcome. To us, it´s about as meaningful as - and less entertaining than - some sort of international gas-passing contest. My Flemish wife, however, has been riveted to every game in the World Cup. What she and 12 million other Belgians see in a bunch of guys running around the field randomly kicking a ball until it accidentally goes in the net is utterly beyond me.

Stuck on a flight with nothing better to watch I endured a complete world cup match, my first. I noticed this scenario, which made me laugh:

1. Player A collides with player B
2. Player B rolls on the ground in agony
3. Player B´s teammates complain to the referee
4. Player A´s teammates also lobby the referee
5. The referee whips out a yellow card on A
6. Player A and coach A go wild complaining
7. Player B gets up, runs around a little bit and rejoins the game, rejuvenated and uninjured

They play for a while the situation repeats.

Match ends a dead boring tie and they quit!

That was the first and last time I´ll watch a world cup match.

When the first flights of Tomahawk cruise missiles and fighter bombers were launched against headquarters buildings of the self-styled Islamic State in Syria and the Khorasan terrorist group, five of America´s Arab friends in the Middle East went along for the ride, according to the list President Obama read to the American people. Notably absent was Turkey, the sole United States treaty ally in the region or, indeed, any other member of the NATO alliance — not France, Germany or Britain. Turkey has not launched a single missile or plane, though its air force has hundreds of American combat aircraft, most

WASHINGTON -- For nearly three months this summer, the Obama administration carefully avoided answering questions about what happened to tens of thousands of immigrant families caught illegally crossing the Mexican border and released into the United States with instructions to report back to immigration authorities. Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson and others said they faced deportation. But it turns out that tens of thousands of those immigrants did not follow the government´s instructions to meet with federal immigration agents within 15 days. Instead, they have vanished into the interior of the U.S. The Homeland Security Department privately acknowledged that about 70 percent

Conservatives are warning President Obama against using a lame-duck session of Congress to push through Attorney General Eric Holder´s replacement, even as the White House signals its intention to fill the post quickly. Holder’s announcement that he will resign as the nation’s top law enforcement officer reverberated Thursday around Washington, where speculation has already begun to mount about who might fill the Cabinet position. Republican lawmakers quickly vowed that whomever Obama taps would be subject to intense scrutiny following an era when the GOP was often at odds with the Justice Department. Of the countless lessons we’ve learned from liberals over the past few years, none is more critical than this: If Democrats find an issue important enough, and if doing something feels like the “right thing,” Barack Obama has the power to act without any regard for separation of powers. So what makes anyone believe that war would be any different? This week the president okayed airstrikes against ISIS targets—allying us with Assad Bashar, possibly Iran and definitely Qatar—using an unrelated 13-year old AUMF as his legal mandate. Seems like a big deal. It might even be a good idea. Yet, even

Changes to the forms required for firearms purchases asking questions about the buyer’s race and ethnicity have drawn strong reaction from gun dealers, privacy advocates and lawmakers. Form 4473, required for an over-the-counter sale by a federally-licensed dealer, now asks first whether a buyer is Hispanic or Non-Hispanic, followed by a question delving into more detailed race-based information. Critics want to know why the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives quietly made the change in 2012. Why are liberals obsessed with oil? And what, exactly, is the “financial incentive?” Here is the

Normally, no one would care that in a recent Atlantic essay — “Why I Hope to Die at 75” — 57-year-old Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel argued that living to be 75 years old was long enough for anyone. After 75, Emanuel suggests, “We are no longer remembered as vibrant and engaged but as feeble, ineffectual, even pathetic.” But Emanuel is no garden-variety crackpot. Nor is he a wannabe science-fiction writer dreaming of a centrally planned planet of robust youthful humanoids.
