BEIJING-Nearly 800,000 people voted in a nonbinding Hong Kong referendum aimed at agitating for greater democracy, organizers said early Monday, and the semi-autonomous Chinese city was bracing for hundreds of thousands of people to march through the streets Tuesday to continue pressing their cause. The 10-day vote in the former British territory -- conducted online, via mobile phones and in person -- asked residents to cast ballots for one of three mechanisms for directly electing the city’s chief executive. During part of the interview Politico author Rachel Bade inquires about the 1.1 million pages of documents Lerner sent to the Department of Justice that became an issue when discovered by the House Oversight Committee on June 9th 2014. BACKSTORY HERE. The documents were sent from IRS to DOJ on a series of 4 discs (CD ROMS) and, according to the

Iraqi Christians: ´US Must Act

One of the last Christian strongholds in Iraq came under attack this week, and its last remaining citizens are making a desperate plea to the United States for help. Until this week, Qaraqosh was a town where Christians from other parts of Iraq could find refuge. But late Wednesday night, ISIS rebels started shelling Qaraqosh, provoking a mass exodus on Thursday. According to various reports, anywhere from 10,000 to 50,000 citizens have fled. The Syrian Catholic Archbishop of Mosul, Yohanna Petros Mouche, has remained behind with around 1,000 of the town’s inhabitants who do not have cars or other means

The legal case against the accused leader of the 2012 attack on U.S. facilities in Benghazi, Libya, began with him being spirited into Washington in darkness for a hearing hastily arranged on a Saturday afternoon. Ahmed Abu Khatallah was flown by helicopter just before dawn from a Navy ship, according to a law enforcement official who requested anonymity to discuss the details. Amid heavy security, he was taken to a federal courthouse blocks from the U.S. Capitol, the official said. As armed U.S. marshals patrolled outside, the unshackled Khatallah stood impassively as his court-appointed lawyer, Michelle Peterson, entered a not-guilty plea. He

BAGHDAD — Syrian warplanes bombed Sunni militants´ positions inside Iraq, military officials confirmed Wednesday, deepening the concerns that the extremist insurgency that spans the two neighboring countries could morph into an even wider regional conflict. US Secretary of State John Kerry warned against the threat and said other nations should stay out. Meanwhile, a new insurgent artillery offensive against Christian villages in the north of Iraq sent thousands of Christians fleeing from their homes, seeking sanctuary in Kurdish-controlled territory, Associated Press reporters who witnessed the scene said. The United States government and a senior Iraqi military official confirmed that Syrian warplanes bombed

In his days as a salesman pitching his healthcare law to the American public, President Barack Obama often said it would not cost much more than a monthly cell-phone bill. For many people, that has turned out to be true, according to new data released by the Department of Health and Human Services on Wednesday. The report found people receiving subsidized health insurance plans are paying $82 a month, on average, for their premiums.(Snip)While Obamacare is clearly helping some people lower their premiums, what´s less clear from the report is the cost of these subsidies to the federal government. Federal authorities announced they had canceled their plan to fly nearly 300 Central American immigrants to Southern California from Texas, but left the door the open to the possibility that the plan could be reinstated. Border Patrol spokesman Ralph DeSio told the Associated Press Sunday that he didn´t know why the flights had been canceled, and described the planning as being "in a very fluid state." Even as the flights were put on hold, workers at a federal training site in New Mexico erected a fence around its grounds over the weekend in preparation for the expected arrival of hundreds more illegal

Iran’s supreme leader yesterday accused the US of trying to retake control of Iraq by exploiting sectarian rivalries, as Sunni insurgents drove toward Baghdad from new strongholds along the Syrian border. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s condemnation of US action came three days after President Barack Obama offered to send 300 military advisers to help the Iraqi government. Mr Khamenei may want to block any US choice of a new prime minister after grumbling in Washington about Shia premier Nuri al-Maliki. Yesterday, militants overran a second frontier post on the Syrian border, extending two weeks of swift territorial gains as the Islamic State of

Sadr City -The parade stretched for several miles through the streets of Baghdad, bristling with bazookas, hi-tech assault rifles and artillery guns. As tens of thousands of uniformed men marched past, loudspeakers proclaimed how they would defend Iraq from the Sunni jihadists rampaging through the country’s north. This pageant of armed might, however, was not an official Iraqi army display to re-assure an anxious public. Instead, it was a show of force by the Mahdi Army, the vast Shia militia that is effectively a parallel military force in Iraq.

The Colorado Rockies weren´t the only ones shut out last night. According to Nielsen, only 52,000 people saw Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw no-hit the Rockies Wednesday night. It´s not that the Dodgers have lame fans. The numbers were low because the majority of the market doesn´t have access to SportsNet LA, the new team-owned channel that is distributed by Time Warner Cable and currently only available to those subscribers. Other distributors, including satellite broadcasters DirecTV and Dish Network and cable operators Cox and Charter have not signed deals to carry SportsNet LA. At issue is the price Time Warner Cable is charging for

In 2003, The New Republic caused a mild stir when it published a rant by Jonathan Chait titled "Mad About You: The case for Bush hatred." (The subheadline doesn´t appear on TNR´s website.) At the moment, Chait, now with New York magazine, is the voice of reason on the left--which means, of course, that the debate in which he´s involved is an exceedingly stupid one. Chait´s piece yesterday on the New York website is in part a response to a Wall Street Journal op-ed by Dick Cheney and Liz Cheney (she is his daughter) in which they accuse President Obama of having "betrayed our past and squandered our freedom."

On the scoreboard in right field, it was 10:08 p.m. in the City of the Angels. And a crowd of 46,069 had just sat in to see the best pitcher in baseball throw the first no-hitter of his career. Clayton Kershaw, who reminds us of Sandy Koufax with every flash of greatness, did it with a flurry. (Snip) Never in major league history had a pitcher given up neither a hit nor a walk while striking out 15. The only pitcher with more strikeouts in a no-hitter: Nolan Ryan, the all-time strikeout leader. Kershaw is so respected that his teammates lined up in front of the dugout to listen to his postgame television interview.

Facebook’s News Feed—the main list of status updates, messages, and photos you see when you open Facebook on your computer or phone—is not a perfect mirror of the world. But few users expect that Facebook would change their News Feed in order to manipulate their emotional state. We now know that’s exactly what happened two years ago. For one week in January 2012, data scientists skewed what almost 700,000 Facebook users saw when they logged into its service. Some people were shown content with a preponderance of happy and positive words; some were shown content analyzed as sadder than average.

The Keystone Pipeline project was expected to create tens of thousands of high paying jobs in the oil industry. The project itself would create 20,000 construction jobs. And the pipeline would bring oil from Canada and North Dakota to refineries in the United States. The proposed project would have extended from Alberta, Canada to Illinois, transporting approximately 400,000 barrels of crude oil per day. Estimated cost is $1.7 billion. But Obama rejected the plan in 2011 and 2014. Democrats are beholden to the radical green movement – the poor and middle class be damned. Now this… Canada pulled the plug on Keystone and will

Edward Klein’s book about the animosity between the Clintons and Obamas, “Blood Feud” (Regnery Publishing), rocketed up the best-seller charts since it was featured in The Post last Sunday. Here, in another exclusive excerpt, Klein describes how Bill’s health is a preoccupation of the Clintons. A pair of black, armor-plated SUVs swung into a suburban cul-de-sac and crunched to a stop in the driveway of the Clintons’ home in Chappaqua, New York. A wall of burly Secret Service agents jumped out and surrounded the man who emerged from the lead vehicle. It was mid-summer 2013, and Bill Clinton looked shrunken and weary.

President Obama will ask Congress to provide more than $2 billion in new funds to control the surge of illegal Central American migrants at the South Texas border, and to grant broader powers for immigration officials to speed deportations of children caught crossing without their parents, White House officials said on Saturday. Mr. Obama will send a letter on Monday to alert Congress that he will seek an emergency appropriation for rapidly expanding border enforcement actions and humanitarian assistance programs to cope with the influx, which includes record numbers of unaccompanied minors and adults bringing children. No. The Tea Party is not being done in by Democrats; it is being done in by the party of big business, crony capitalism, big money from insider Wall Street and big banks, the Chamber of Commerce and the corporate lobbying wing of the Tea Party's real nemesis:

I watched The Five discuss the preview of Megyn Kelly’s upcoming Bill Ayers interview. Bob Beckel is still claiming that Obama didn’t know Ayers – “met him once” – and the other four supposedly conservative journalists had nothing to contradict him with! Every reader of AT knows that Ayers and Obama worked together - that Ayers hired Obama for the biggest job of his life before becoming President – handing out $100 million dollars of the Annenberg Challenge grants to radical causes, instead of using it to help Chicago’s schoolchildren. ere is a preview of the interview from Fox: Stanley Kurtz at the Wall St. Journal:

As thousands of disease-riddled criminals storm across our borders, is it really time to mince words? President Obama appears to have an Agenda for America that stinks worse than a Border Patrol bus depot crammed with urine-drenched illegals. Is the man trying to protect and defend us, or does he want us to kick the bucket, run down the curtain, and join the choir invisible? On January 29, 2014, the Department of Homeland Security advertised for a vendor to escort 65,000 “unaccompanied alien children,” indicating that they not only knew the alien invasion was coming, they planned it.

What we have been able to assess so far ... is that there is a problem that has been exposed, which is that there are now a group of women of an indeterminate size who no longer have access to free contraceptive coverage simply

I am rapidly coming to the preliminary conclusion that Elizabeth Warren will be the Democrats’ 2016 standard bearer. Hillary Clinton is just too unlikable (remember that Barack Obama called her “likable enough” in one of the most memorable back handed compliments of recent political memory), and too transparently greedy, self-serving, and out of touch. Not to mention the appalling foreign affairs crises the United States faces in the wake of her term as Secretary of State. Her brand is tarnished. Jonah Goldberg, one of the canniest and funniest observers of the political scene, has a must-read column on why Warren

Say this for President Obama: He’s got an uncanny ability to block out distractions and keep his eye on the ball. Facing a horrific expansion of terrorism in the Mideast, a meltdown of public support at home and major rebukes by the Supreme Court, the president remains fixated on No. 1. “I’m finding lately I just want to say what’s on my mind,” he told a Minneapolis audience Friday, and then ticked off a series of complaints about — surprise — Republicans. “They don’t do anything, except block me and call me names,” he said. “If they were more interested in growing the

President Barack Obama announced today that he would again go around Congress to enact immigration reform measures. In a hastily scheduled statement this afternoon from the White House Rose Garden, Obama said he would ´greatly prefer´ Congress passing any sort of immigration reform legislation, even if it wasn´t the bill he supports, but he was done sitting around waiting for that to happen. The president said his administration would ´refocus´ its efforts on the border, and he would use his ´existing legal authority´ to do ´what Congress refuses to do´ and fix the broken immigration system. The President said he
