RFRA Worked the Way It Was

Today an important religious- liberty law did what it was supposed to do. In Burwell v. Hobby Lobby, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) provided the Supreme Court with a mechanism for weighing competing claims in our pluralistic society. The Court determined that we can, in fact, balance seemingly conflicting interests without throwing out religious liberty. (nip) The Constitution and RFRA supply effective tools for protecting religious liberty, even in a culture with deep disagreements on issues such as abortion. You don’t have to agree with the Hahn and Green families’ decision to support their freedom to make that decision.

Judicial Watch participated in a major victory for the rule of law and the U.S. Constitution – and Barack Obama received a humiliating setback in his ruthless, reckless efforts to “fundamentally transform” America by egregiously exceeding constitutional restraints on presidential power. The Supreme Court – in a stunning 9-0 vote – ruled that Obama overstepped his constitutional authority in bypassing the U.S. Senate to make a series of “recess appointments” to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). In November 2012, JW and the Allied Educational Foundation (AEF) jointly filed an amici curiae brief in National Labor Relations Board v. Noel

Monday at the Aspen Institute, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton reacted to the Supreme Court´s Hobby Lobby 5-4 ruling against requiring certain companies to offer their employees types of birth control as part of the Affordable Care Act mandate by calling it a "deeply disturbing" slippery slope. Clinton warned blood transfusions are against some religions and questioned if they could be banned but the court specifically said in the ruling that "this decision concerns only the contraception mandate" and does not apply to the question of whether for-profit companies could claim a religious exemption for other potentially controversial procedures

“A welcome antidote to the official insensitivity to religion” is how the New York Times described the Religious Freedom Restoration Act when it was passed by Congress in 1993. That, by the way, was the 103rd Congress. Both of its houses were controlled by the Democrats. The bill was inked by President Clinton, who is a Democrat. It turns out, however, that neither the Times nor the Democrats meant any of it. They don’t give a fig about religious freedom. Nope. When the Supreme Court decided, as it did this morning, that the Religious Freedom Restoration Act covered not only,

Six days before President Obama called for more funding to address the tens of thousands of unaccompanied children streaming across the southern U.S. border, a top Obama administration official said the border patrol was “adequately staffed” and had the “resources available” to deal with the problem. The remarks, given the abrupt turnaround by Obama, drew the ire of Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT), who slammed the witness Ronald D. Vitiello, Deputy Chief of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, for “misleading” Congress. "They misled Congress and then blamed Congress. That´s how unorganized they are. On Monday, conservatives across the country celebrated Justice Samuel Alito’s decisions in Harris v. Quinn and the so-called Hobby Lobby case. Harris v. Quinn established that states could not force home health care providers into unions; the Hobby Lobby case decided that closely-held, for-profit corporations owned by religious people could not be forced to pay for the contraceptive care of their employees. Right-wingers on Twitter, talk radio, and throughout the blogosphere hailed the decisions as great conservative victories; leftists hailed them as great defeats (including the execrable Sandra Fluke, who falsely tweeted that the Supreme Court had somehow granted blanket

A woman who would be hailed as a trailblazer for women in the media if she weren’t a Catholic religious sister in a full habit is Mother Angelica. The international media presence she founded, Eternal Word Television Network, filed an emergency appeal to the Supreme Court and then found itself receiving a temporary injunction from the 11th circuit keeping them from having to be subject to the abortion-drug, contraception, sterilization mandate. More about the case here. A video Becket put together about Mother Angelica:

HENRICO — A special grand jury today issued five indictments against Del. Joseph D. Morrissey, D-Henrico, adding to a long political and legal career marked by controversy, sanctions and, now, allegations of illicit sex. The charges by the grand jury meeting in Henrico include felony counts of indecent liberties with a minor, possession of pornographic images of an underage female and of solicitation to obtain the images. “He had sex with her twice in his law office and texted someone about it,” special prosecutor William Neely said. Morrissey also was indicted on a felony charge of distribution of child pornography

Supreme Court rules on contraceptives;

The U.S. Supreme Court dealt a setback to President Obama´s healthcare law Monday and ruled that Christian business owners with religious objections to certain forms of birth control may refuse to provide their employees with insurance coverage for contraceptives. In a major 5-4 ruling on religious freedom, the justices decided the religious rights of these company owners trump the rights of female employees to receive the full contraceptive coverage promised by the law. The decision, written by Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr., is a victory for social conservatives. It also could open the door for other businesses to claim a

WASHINGTON — The White House says women’s health will be jeopardized by a Supreme Court’s decision that allows corporations with religious objections to opt out of a requirement that they cover contraceptives. White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Monday that women should make personal health decisions for themselves. Earnest said the White House is looking into how many women could be affected by the decision. He said Congress should take action to assist women affected by the decision. The contraceptive coverage requirement is contained in Obama’s new health care law. The court’s 5-4 decision means the Obama administration must find

Facebook’s News Feed—the main list of status updates, messages, and photos you see when you open Facebook on your computer or phone—is not a perfect mirror of the world. But few users expect that Facebook would change their News Feed in order to manipulate their emotional state. We now know that’s exactly what happened two years ago. For one week in January 2012, data scientists skewed what almost 700,000 Facebook users saw when they logged into its service. Some people were shown content with a preponderance of happy and positive words; some were shown content analyzed as sadder than average.

The Keystone Pipeline project was expected to create tens of thousands of high paying jobs in the oil industry. The project itself would create 20,000 construction jobs. And the pipeline would bring oil from Canada and North Dakota to refineries in the United States. The proposed project would have extended from Alberta, Canada to Illinois, transporting approximately 400,000 barrels of crude oil per day. Estimated cost is $1.7 billion. But Obama rejected the plan in 2011 and 2014. Democrats are beholden to the radical green movement – the poor and middle class be damned. Now this… Canada pulled the plug on Keystone and will

Edward Klein’s book about the animosity between the Clintons and Obamas, “Blood Feud” (Regnery Publishing), rocketed up the best-seller charts since it was featured in The Post last Sunday. Here, in another exclusive excerpt, Klein describes how Bill’s health is a preoccupation of the Clintons. A pair of black, armor-plated SUVs swung into a suburban cul-de-sac and crunched to a stop in the driveway of the Clintons’ home in Chappaqua, New York. A wall of burly Secret Service agents jumped out and surrounded the man who emerged from the lead vehicle. It was mid-summer 2013, and Bill Clinton looked shrunken and weary.

President Obama will ask Congress to provide more than $2 billion in new funds to control the surge of illegal Central American migrants at the South Texas border, and to grant broader powers for immigration officials to speed deportations of children caught crossing without their parents, White House officials said on Saturday. Mr. Obama will send a letter on Monday to alert Congress that he will seek an emergency appropriation for rapidly expanding border enforcement actions and humanitarian assistance programs to cope with the influx, which includes record numbers of unaccompanied minors and adults bringing children. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) vowed to crush the Tea Party, and with help from Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) in Kentucky, he did, and nationally, he will. House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) has sent the Tea Party to the back benches, and after the recent defeat of House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.), is his successor any different than him? No. Did anything change? No. The Tea Party is not being done in by Democrats; it is being done in by the party of big business, crony capitalism, big money from insider Wall Street and big banks, the Chamber of Commerce and the corporate lobbying wing of the Tea Party's real nemesis:

Every reader of AT knows that Ayers and Obama worked together - that Ayers hired Obama for the biggest job of his life before becoming President – handing out $100 million dollars of the Annenberg Challenge grants to radical causes, instead of using it to help Chicago’s schoolchildren. ere is a preview of the interview from Fox: Stanley Kurtz at the Wall St. Journal:

As thousands of disease-riddled criminals storm across our borders, is it really time to mince words? President Obama appears to have an Agenda for America that stinks worse than a Border Patrol bus depot crammed with urine-drenched illegals. Is the man trying to protect and defend us, or does he want us to kick the bucket, run down the curtain, and join the choir invisible? On January 29, 2014, the Department of Homeland Security advertised for a vendor to escort 65,000 “unaccompanied alien children,” indicating that they not only knew the alien invasion was coming, they planned it.

What we have been able to assess so far ... is that there is a problem that has been exposed, which is that there are now a group of women of an indeterminate size who no longer have access to free contraceptive coverage simply

I am rapidly coming to the preliminary conclusion that Elizabeth Warren will be the Democrats’ 2016 standard bearer. Hillary Clinton is just too unlikable (remember that Barack Obama called her “likable enough” in one of the most memorable back handed compliments of recent political memory), and too transparently greedy, self-serving, and out of touch. Not to mention the appalling foreign affairs crises the United States faces in the wake of her term as Secretary of State. Her brand is tarnished. Say this for President Obama: He’s got an uncanny ability to block out distractions and keep his eye on the ball. Facing a horrific expansion of terrorism in the Mideast, a meltdown of public support at home and major rebukes by the Supreme Court, the president remains fixated on No. 1. “I’m finding lately I just want to say what’s on my mind,” he told a Minneapolis audience Friday, and then ticked off a series of complaints about — surprise — Republicans. “They don’t do anything, except block me and call me names,” he said. “If they were more interested in growing the

President Barack Obama announced today that he would again go around Congress to enact immigration reform measures. In a hastily scheduled statement this afternoon from the White House Rose Garden, Obama said he would ´greatly prefer´ Congress passing any sort of immigration reform legislation, even if it wasn´t the bill he supports, but he was done sitting around waiting for that to happen. The president said his administration would ´refocus´ its efforts on the border, and he would use his ´existing legal authority´ to do ´what Congress refuses to do´ and fix the broken immigration system. The President said he
